Nah, Sakura Wars is better.  More critically acclaimed, even.  Suikoden III just had two good games and everything else has been 'meh.'

Suikoden has II, III, and V. 1 is still pretty fun, though dated. Only IV sucks.

Love Skies of Arcadia.  I'd like a sequel but Sega would find a way to fuck it up.  I'd rather just appreciate its greatness rather than play through an embarrassingly bungled sequel on the DS or Wii or some shit.

Well I have been waiting for a sequel since year 2000 now and I have accepted that it will never happen. There was a rumor going on a couple of years ago saying SoA2 was in the works, but it was just someone who wanted attention (and no it wasnt matt)

I think Sega has given up on real RPGs.  I heard Virtua Quest (which was a massive, MASSIVE flop) was even outsourced to the fine folks at TOSE.

Nowadays it's just online Phantasy Star crap and those Shining games that have nothing to do with classic Shining Force stuff.

Shadow Hearts Covenant is great. It's a better than Suikoden III.
Covenant is one of the better Ps2 jrpg's, and that says a lot.

Already played SH. I even played Koudelka. But I just couldn't get into SH3. Coventant is definitely the best SH game.

And yeah, I pirated Suikioden III. True story: It was the first game I ever pirated because I didn't want to import it.
SIII was probably the biggest catalyst for me to become a pirate. I downloaded the whole internet since then.

Tales of the Abyss sucks.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant isn't that great. What I played that is. I think I played 15 hours. The dungeons sucked. The characters sucked. The story sucked. The battle system, while interesting, sucked. The customization, while interesting, mostly sucked and there were too many useless systems. One screen towns. Offensive homophobic salesmen.

Game is shit looking back on it.

Dunno the exact crossover, but the two directors of VC worked on Skies of Arcadia. Sega WOW/Overworks has done a lot of high quality games of the years, so I guess it's no surprise that Valkyria is the best RPG this gen.

You never answered my question Beezy. What stands out to you that makes you so abrasive towards what's out?

Are you arguing theres no GOOD ones - and if so, what is your examples?

Are you arguing theres barely any JRPGs out compared to last round - and if so, what examples?

For the record I barely touch my DS, and don't own a PSP, DQ9 being the only exception lately.

Last gen, the best jrpgs didn't come out until the end of the ps2's lifespan.

So far we've got Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, The Last Remnant (haven't played), Nier (haven't played), Tales of Vesperia, Demon's Souls, Xenoblade (which we may or may not get), Valkyria Chronicles, and an assortment of ds and psp rpgs that vary in terms of quality. I'd say, if you're a jrpg fan, there's something for everyone except people like me who are traditionalists and prefer the traditional rpg model to everything else, which is why I like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and Dragon Quest 9 the most.

And this without mentioning the fact that Persona 3 and 4 both came out during this generation, in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

So yeah, the past few years have been good. Unless you're a big fan of traditional rpgs.

There's so much wrong in this statement.

If anything, this gen, jrpgs have been more progressive and not pinned down to genre norms than ever, in the gameplay sense. Almost every jrpg this gen has been experimental in nature, including FF13. If anything, the traditional jrpgs, like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Dragon Quest 9...those are the rare ones.

For every traditional Dragon Quest, there will be 10 times as many experimental games liek The World Ends With You or FF13 or Sigma Harmonics or Valkyria Chronicles or Demon's Souls or or or or or

I mean, The Last Ranker was just released in Japan. It is a experimental game where every npc is a potential enemy with a ranking, that you have the ability to fight. That by itself, is a dramatic change from standard rpg formula.

Are people really playing jrpgs before they say they're stuck in the 90's?

Of course not. There's plenty more you can add to that list too: The Last Remnant, Resonance of Fate, Nier, Infinite Space, Half-Minute Hero, even Folklore. JRPGs are one of the most diverse genres.

I actually consider jrpgs to be THE most diverse genre.

I don't consider Folklore to be an rpg though. More like action adventure.

Beezy's a fellow traditionalist it seems. That's the one area jrpgs are lacking these days. Either they're action rpgs or command rpgs with a non-traditional structure (P3/P4, FF13, RoF)

FF13 is experimental? Sure the battle system is quite different but beside from that it is so static that you thought it came from the 80s. FF12, that was the experimental one.

Skies of Arcadia is so sweet. Love the charecters, Aika is awesome. I love the part where she submits her design for your pirate flag and says something like "the cat has some gold in its mouth, which means we'll take your gold" or something. I dunno. But yeah, beautiful, lovable, fantastic game.

Are you fucking kidding me? Removing towns? Removing any sense of exploration outside of one chapter? Removing any quest that's not battle-oriented? Making the whole structure one long tube? Featuring multiple characters with varying emphasis with a chapter system?

The game is the definition of experimental.

Of course, that doesn't make it good, and there have been games have done it far better than FF13 in the past, namely Breath of Fire 5 and Vagrant Story. They are linear 15-20 hour treks that feature zero exploration. But where FF13 fails, they succeed.

dragon quarter is terrible,it feels like everything in the game is tailor suited to piss off the player, limited inventory? check! few save points? check! save points require rare item to use like in resident evil? check! gimmick system forcing you to restart the game if you screw up? check! equipment that's unusable and just take up precious inventory space when you find it until you identify it? check!
oh and in the european version you can't even quick save, they probably realized the game wasn't still being annoying enough

i seriously don't understand how anybody can get into it other that it feature strategy rpg like combat, which mostly boils to placing traps around and use rin to push them away while you stockpile AP,EXCITING! maybe someone will come here and says "bubububu the bosses are so awesome" but i seriously couldn't be bothered to keep playing for more than 3 hours

vagrant story sucks a little less but still sucks

dragon quarter is terrible,it feels like everything in the game is tailor suited to piss off the player, limited inventory? check! few save points? check! save points require rare item to use like in resident evil? check! gimmick system forcing you to restart the game if you screw up? check! equipment that's unusable and just take up precious inventory space when you find it until you identify it? check!
oh and in the european version you can't even quick save, they probably realized the game wasn't still being annoying enough

i seriously don't understand how anybody can get into it other that it feature strategy rpg like combat, which mostly boils to placing traps around and use rin to push them away while you stockpile AP,EXCITING! maybe someone will come here and says "bubububu the bosses are so awesome" but i seriously couldn't be bothered to keep playing for more than 3 hours

vagrant story sucks a little less but still sucks

shit, magus. You are going to weeaboo hell
