Super Mario Galaxy 2 is Mario Galaxy: New Levels
« on: August 01, 2010, 08:38:02 PM »
And somehow it's still the best game this year this side of Super Street Fighter IV.

Don't understand how people like Wrath (actually, Wrath is the only person) can not like SMG while saying SMG2 stomps on SMG when it's basically the same shit except with (so far) fewer levels.

Game of the generation part deux.

I had more fun with the original. The sequel is better, but the original was new and fresh at that time.

Mass Effect 2 is still my GOTY, followed by SMG2.

Yeah. I played SMG two months ago. I've been waiting for the fresh and new feeling to wear off so I can go in SMG2 cold turkey but...it's the same shit except without an annoying ass hub world (thank god).

World 2. Quit and went back to RE4.

Don't want to get off track from DQ9+RE4 cum combo, and I beat SMG in 2-3 days with like 80 stars. So...I have a feeling I'd do the same thing here.

Only disappointment so far is the music. Whereas Mario Galaxy is awesome game music, Galaxy 2 is orchestrated bullshit so far. It sounds nice, but not what I want from Mario music.

Still nothing detracts the fact that SMG is a perfect game.

Hated the Green Star hunt in Galaxy 2... some of the stars are awkwardly placed, and due to the lack of depth perception when projecting a 3D image on a 2D screen, it makes it really hard to judge where the stars are (the ones floating in mid air). Got 241/242 stars and then called it a day... I think overall I liked Galaxy 1 better, since it was something fresh at the time, and doesn't have any of the shitty Yoshi chili pepper levels or Rock Mario levels or Monkey levels.

Mario Galaxy may not be the OMG BEST GAME EVAR but it's certainly one of the best games I've ever played. I also think it's pretty self explanatory why people would prefer Galaxy to 64 or Sunshine but that's my opinion. It's just objectively better in every single way except maybe controls (Sunshine tops Galaxy in this department).

Seems we have opposite tastes then. I hate wading around hub worlds in 3d platformers. Give me the meat of the game without wasting 2-3 minutes getting to the next level!

Arcade gameplay is only a part of the reason I prefer 2d platformers. Galaxy 2 is going in the right direction.

This doesn't mean I don't have varied tastes.

But when it comes to platformers I want to do levels, not do mindless exploration. I'd rather have the exploration bits be tied to the level's design than pointless non-linearity.

I was never big on 3D Mario. Didn't care for Mario 64 back on N64 and I got bored with it pretty quick on the DS too. Sunshine was the only one I was able to play through to the end and that's probably because I had nothing else to play on GC at the time. I did have fun with it though, unlike the other games.

I bought and tried to like SMG, but I lost interest about 40 stars in.

I think SMG is the closest to a 2d Mario in 3d, though. It's not full of levels that lack focus and emphasize exploration or solving puzzles like in Mario 64. It's straight up platforming goodness with no padding and tight level design that previous 3d Mario's lacked.

It's one of the first 3d platformers that seems to really "get" it, while all other 3d platformers take place in big cities or have big worlds and other unnecessary stuff. SMG felt like back to basics for me.

Different strokes.

doesn't ring a bell, so probably not.

It's one of the few games I feel guilty for not being more into, because it is extremely well-designed.

I got 120 stars in SMG1 within a month of it coming out, with like 9 power-ons recorded on my Wii channel. Didn't touch it once in two years.

Got SMG2, powered it on 20 times or so, played half as much, got like 70 stars and beat the game. No real desire to do more. Kind of a shame.

I hate to say it, but as someone who generally enjoys more of the same, SMG2 was pretty disappointing. It was a step backwards in almost every area except possibly level design.

Isn't level design essentially all a platformer is? Good platforming equates to good level design. So that makes no sense.

like tiesto i stopped at 241,i wanted to go for the full 242 but when i heard i had to get 9999 star bits before the last star unlocked i decided it wasn't worth the effort

uh... anyway i pretty much agree with tiesto (tough i didn't mind any of the stuff that bothered him) it really lacked any sort of freshness,it gets especialy bad near the end where they straightly rip off stuff from the original galaxy and then call the level "THROWBACK SOMETHING!"

There is.  I forget the exact star, but it is one where you're rolling as rock mario.  It's obvious when you first play the level because you get a bunch of bits each time, plus you get like two 1ups each time, so you kill yourself before finishing and repeat many times until you get the starbits you need.  But the 242 star sucks because it is a slightly altered daredevil run of the 241st star.  It's a pain in the ass and not worth it since you pretty much have unlocked everything at that point (except the ability to see how many times you've died while playing).

Game is still pretty good but not nearly Galaxy quality yet. It feels like a pointless sequel, and it doesn't seem it has sold nearly as well Galaxy either. I think the only level I've played so far that's nearly on par with Galaxy in terms of design is Space Storm Galaxy.

"Beat" Mario Galaxy 2. I'd say overall it was a disappointment coming off of Galaxy 1. Too many Mario-isms: quantity over quality (out of the levels I've played I really only love two levels), brain dead difficulty, too much hand holding, pacing issues, tutorial levels up the ass, too back ended for my liking. I don't like Mario games as much as everyone else, but Galaxy man...that game clicked.

I actually kind of regret purchasing it, not because it's a bad game, because it's not, but it certainly soiled my Mario Galaxy 1 high. I'd rather just replay Galaxy than spend 50 dollars on the same thing except not as good.

Great game, but it didn't really click with me as much as Galaxy 1 did, which I was kinda expecting it to.

I really can't understand how people think it's better than Galaxy 1 in any way, or that it's harder. I really don't. Unless they mean the green stars, which I haven't gotten to. Then again, I just played Galaxy for the first time two months ago. But it's pretty telling: I beat Galaxy 1 in two-three days with 80 stars, went back for more two weeks later and got 120 stars. I've had Galaxy 2 for three weeks, played Resident Evil 4 wii instead of it, can only play a few worlds at a time before wanting to turn it off, and I just beat Galaxy 2 and I just put it in its box so I play more Resident Evil 4 wii.

Still, it's probably the funnest game of 2010 I've played. Though, what I played of Red Dead Redemption yesterday may contest that claim.

B+

I'll be honest, thinking about it, part of what made the original game so memorable was that it was so new and (though I hate to use the term) "fresh". SMG2 following the template almost to a T, really hurt it imo. And I have to say, I do wish they kinda made a brand new Mario game in a different setting.

But even if we ignore the similarities, I still think SMG edges out the sequel thanks to better music and a much better sense of cohesion.
