The Wire doesn't take place in your ideal world.

Kids these days.

He was the only character I really, really hated from the show.

Him, Carter (Carver?) and that other shitty black cop at Western District who handles people any fucking way he wants. All of them need to be capped - in the head - by Marlow and crew by the end of the season or I will be pissed.

wait, how far are you in Season 4?  And you still hate Carver?

Something wrong with you, mang.  :-\

....do you know what show you're watching, Himu?  smh

besides that, out of ALL the characters on the show, you think the "worst" one (morally, we presume) is a cop who has, admittedly, beaten on some people, and, through stupidity, incompetence, and insensitivity, has sabotaged investigations and put a kid's life at risk?

As opposed to, say....the cold-hearted motherfuckers who order the cold-blooded murders of anyone brave enough to bear witness to a crime?
Or Stringer Bell ordering the contract killing of Dee, just because he thinks Dee might snitch, and so he can pork Dee's baby momma?

Your moral compass is all kinds of fucked up, Himumu.  :-\

Himu wants the Wire to be an anime set in futuristic tokyo where an elite squadron of robotic dick-girl cops set up hidden cameras in highschool locker rooms for upskirt shots.

And then the bad cop gets capped by the high school girls and every one lives happily ever after.

It's just a fucking tv show and is no indication of my moral compass.

I want Marlo to get capped or in stripes, too. But I've dealt with Herc throughout the entire tv series. That is four seasons. HERC HAS GOT TO GO.

I like Carv a lot. He has a lot of character development. His development from season 1 and 2 to 3 and then finally, the end of 3 and throughout 4, where he takes up a mantle and becomes good police...was really great to watch.

But Herc...:lol I'm mixed on the guy. Sometimes I'm rooting for him so he doesn't fuck up. But then he fucks up :lol

I finished The Wire season 4 last night.

I think it's a shoe in for best season, along with season 3, so far. The bridge from season 4 to 5 is the best and I'm curious to see how all the kids are progressing in season 5.

Season 4 is one of those things for me where it makes me feel glad for what I've got and what I've experienced as I known far too many people fall into the deep end, even if they were raised in the suburbs.

Out of the kids, I'd say I liked Namond the most, with Duquan, Mike and Randy behind. I think the thing I enjoyed the most this season were the parallels between the kids and the rest of the cast. Like for instance, Namond is a direct parallel to D'Angelo, another favorite character of mine, but unlike Dee, Namond manages to get out. Question though, how come Bunny could take in Namond while Carv couldn't take in Randy?

Also, as for the education system, despite not ever even setting foot in Maryland, I find the education system to be akin to the one in Texas. In Texas we would take an annual test and instead of teaching us the material, we would be taught how to pass the test. The teachers didn't like it, but they had to do it to keep their jobs and some even openly complained about it to us - the students. And I didn't even go to a school in the ghetto, but a pre-dominantly white school in a middle class part of Houston. So I can only imagine what it's like for students in other areas to go through the same stuff, with less support, materials and money backing them.

One thing I've never understood about the street movement is the whole "no snitching" thing. I know that talking to the cops is perceived as weakness, but why is it always considered to be a bad thing? I was taught that telling the truth was always the best thing to do no matter the situation, why is talking to the authorities perceived as weakness?

Finally, since Herc's fuck ups caught up to him, I'm satisfied. Now it's time for Marlo to go.

Season 4 montage was the most emotional for me. Definitely the best edited.

that being said, The Shield S5 and S7 can't be fucked with

At first I was thinking season 5 was probably the worst season - which uh, isn't saying much at all since it's the fucking Wire and this season is still amazing - but I may put it on par with season 1 or 2. We'll see.

One more episode.  :'(

I'm just amazed at the quality of this show. Five seasons, over what, 60-70 episodes? And I've only been meh on ONE episode and even that ep was better than most tv. Every single episode I've seen has captivated and had me enthralled. I can't say that for too many tv shows. Even my favorites likes Seinfeld or The Simpsons or whatever, they have some alright episodes, and they took a few seasons to get their A game on. The Wire was on its A game throughout the entire fucking series.

Goddamn.

Has anyone seen that show by the creators of The Wire that's in New Orleans following the aftermath of Katrina? Is it nearly as good?

Probably my favorite tv series now.

I'd like to make an attempt to rank all the characters but...

Anyways:

3 = 4 > 1 > 2 = 5

Now to go through this thread:

That's okay; he turns out to be a pretty BA Recon Marine later.

Indeed, one of the best. I remember hearing BET completely cut the docks scenes out of their broadcast of S2. Pretty pathetic. Those scenes speak beyond race

I think I have a man-crush on David Simon:

"Simon makes it clear that the show’s ambitions were grand. “ ‘The Wire’ is dissent,” he says. “It is perhaps the only storytelling on television that overtly suggests that our political and economic and social constructs are no longer viable, that our leadership has failed us relentlessly, and that no, we are not going to be all right.” He also likes to say that “The Wire” is a story about the “decline of the American empire.” Simon’s belief in the show is a formidable thing, and it leads him into some ostentatious comparisons that he sometimes laughs at himself for and sometimes does not. Recently, he spoke at Loyola College, in Baltimore; he described the show in lofty terms that left many of the students in the audience puzzled—at least, those who had come hoping to hear how they might get a job in Hollywood. In creating “The Wire,” Simon said, he and his colleagues had “ripped off the Greeks: Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides. Not funny boy—not Aristophanes. We’ve basically taken the idea of Greek tragedy and applied it to the modern city-state.” He went on, “What we were trying to do was take the notion of Greek tragedy, of fated and doomed people, and instead of these Olympian gods, indifferent, venal, selfish, hurling lightning bolts and hitting people in the ass for no reason—instead of those guys whipping it on Oedipus or Achilles, it’s the postmodern institutions . . . those are the indifferent gods."

"My standard for verisimilitude is simple and I came to it when I started to write prose narrative: fuck the average reader. I was always told to write for the average reader in my newspaper life. The average reader, as they meant it, was some suburban white subscriber with two-point-whatever kids and three-point-whatever cars and a dog and a cat and lawn furniture. He knows nothing and he needs everything explained to him right away, so that exposition becomes this incredible, story-killing burden. Fuck him. Fuck him to hell."

What is interesting is that the show didn't win one Emmy, but amongst critics and reviewers, it's regarded as the best drama to grace television. It kinda falls into exactly what he said. Though, stuff like Mad Men and Breaking Bad winning lately gives me hope, I think there's a lot of truth in what this man says.
