All I remember is that the combat was good but the rest of the game was broken at best.

Did they ever fix Lionheart? I remember that having a godlike first few levels and then it went to shit.

everyone's always praising Planescape, but they always refer to the characters and dialogue and i never read anything about the fighting - so i guess what i am asking is if i buy planescape am i ever going to be given the opportunity to decapitate anyone or is every dispute handled by clicking through a dialogue tree

Planescape has decent combat, but your character is immortal so you're never going to get to a point where you have to worry about getting killed.

If you want D&D combat, it's all about Icewind Dale or Baldur's Gate.
