It's 20 minutes with commercial interruptions. Without commercials, what you described, along with Gothywhore falling in love with Jockyputz happens in the space of 10 minutes, along with the whole Gothywhore likes being pretty thing.

I have no idea why the movie has any sort of good rep.

Anyway I was bored and watched it on comedy central, after having somehow skipped this movie till now I found it incredibly amusing.
Not the movie itself, but the amount of content from it that was ripped and put in "not another teen movie".

It's like bizarro world. This movie rocks. The soundtrack is impeccable, it captures 1985 in a nutshell. The hair in this movie is reason enough to love it. Who can forget Judd Nelson's turn as school thug, forcing his way into Molly Ringwald's panties. Of course, you have the amazing reveal of dandruffy klepto into totally fuckable girl next door Ally Sheedy. And as a bonus, she's crazy in real life. Then you have Emelio, in a laughable performance, where he gets put in his place time after time by the real deal Nelson. Hell, even Anthony Michael Hall, in the role that undoubtedly inspired his later steroid use, put Estevez in his place by referencing his tights. As a second bonus, realize that Hall was blisteringly drunk in every scene.

God, growing up I couldn't stand Molly Ringwald. Once I saw her topless riding that dude on a boat though, I would do unspeakably nasty things to that girl. Especially the version in the Breakfast Club. Mmmm Claire
