Sho Nuff - beta had chinese names for a while,after they replaced the chinese names with actual japanese name they were all mispelled which is the reason people says it's been developed by chinese

I think the kanji/Chinese thing was just an attempt to give the names more flavor, sort of like all the Latin they put in their titles and stuff. I don't think there's any actual evidence that they falsified their credit listings, but whatever

Looking into it a bit more, apparently the Chocobo/"horsebird" thing was just in one item name and the word actually used for Chocobos in the Chinese versions of the FF games is totally different, so yeah, looks like some folk on 2ch were just looking for another outlet for their xenophobia.

No, the Chocobo thing in particular was just for one item. Apparently they started development planning to use the same names for everything in the English and Japanese versions and just render the English names as katakana, then at some point they thought that was ruining the atmosphere so they decided to switch everything from katakana-based names to kanji-based names, and then later (after release) when people complained they were hard to understand they decided to change them back to katakana-based names again. Given that, I'm not surprised that there's some weirdness in the text, someone had to go through a long list of items under deadline desperately trying to think up kanji-based names for all of them. FWIW, an ex-SE acquaintance I trust who was there (in a different division) during most of FFXIV's development also tells me the game was made entirely in-house as far as he knows.

So hate on the game all you want, but no need to scapegoat the Chinese for it (or illegal Mexican immigrants or Barack Obama's Muslim heritage).
