kinect sports is so much fucking fun.  no joke.

really? Is it better than Wii sports?

Im loving Dance Central and Kinectimals. I'll probably start getting into Kinect Adventures once I 1000G Kinectimals.

Kinectimals is a great game, really fun and cute, and theres tons of shit to collect. It's like 8-10 hours for 1000G so surprisingly big too. My only complaints are the contest activities don't really intergrate the cubs as much as they should, and are a bit repetitive. And the flying narrator weasel fairy thing is a bit intense sometimes. The graphics and animation are fantastic.

Australian news journalism is terrible, not sure why they're upset.

Well I know why, but I mean why would normal people care.

People seemed more pissed that it became a kinect advertisement that Microsoft paid for. Which, I don't see but whatever.

haha  okay okay

first off, it has to be fucking FAR.

I've got that motherfucker mounted on the wall so about 9 ft of space and it's still a tight fit.  I gotta rearrange my living room.

It gets a little frustrating sometime with two people because of the limited space, it loses you sometime for seemingly no reason at all.  but everything is gravy with one person.  At the moment, it has trouble with kids because they're too short to play with an adult in its current position.

Games are amazingly fun.  It feels much more interactive than the wii because i move my whole damn body to run and hit the tennis ball.  it's way more challenging than most wii games and not in the i'm so fucking frustrated because my wii/kinect misses my movements, but because the opponent is more challenging.  playing volleyball with another person is the shit and you really get into it.

some games get dumbed down with 2 players.  I don't know if it's because of my limited space or it would do it no matter how much space I have.  but for example, in table tennis single player I have to run from side to side to get the ball.  in mulitiplayer i just swing the paddle, backhand, left, right etc.  the avatar moves on his own so there's no running

either way, it's awesome.  I'm getting dance central soon so I'l let you know about that.  But it works awesome. and i'm pretty excited about what they can do with it.

I was offered a Kinect for free yesterday but turned it down - there's just no way I could play it without moving every piece of furniture in my living room around. (this was also why it was being given away). Who cares about a bit of convenience in the interface if it causes so much real life inconvenience. Half-baked.

Yeah, if you don't have the space it's more of a pain in the ass than anything.  I barely have enough to make it work perfect with one person.  It is pretty damn dodgy with two if playing anything that requires it to track your lower half.  But bowling with people is damn fun party game and is way more fun than the wii version and way less "ARGH WHY THE FUCK DID IT DO THAT" moments

The wii sports resort of bowling is damn near perfect. I grew to dislike the Wii Sports version because applying spin didn't spin the direction you intended, but rather locked on to pins. The motionplus allowed them to accurately control and direct your spin, and you could further influence that by when you released your ball. The impression I got from kinect is that it 'guesses' when you release the ball based on your gesture, and that kind of thing would piss me off to be honest.

My daughter kept interrupting my Kinectimals introduction, and I think it was confused about who it was supposed to be tracking, because she was causing the panther to lie down, while I was causing it to jump. Pretty weird.

Hell, I'm planning on buying it, since I have a pretty large living room (we combined our kitchen/living/dining into a "great room"). Why didn't you bag it and then give it to one of your Tokyo friends? I'm sure someone would have wanted it! Or would it have been one of those awkward "Where is that Kinect I gave you?" moments over beers at Casa Cormacaroni?

There was never any real announcement about it though, huh? Man, I thought it would be a really interesting experiment for XBLA, to have a first-party title that was out there for everyone for free, meaning it would probably have a consistent online multiplayer group available, plus the ability to show off your Avatar Awards, so there's something driving that marketplace, PLUS it would be interesting data about micropayments driving a console multiplayer game... Darn it. I was curious how it would work out. Now it's just shovelware for a controller most people won't buy.

Yeah, but they will be adding stuff
Kinect can see depth so it would be natural thing to do

http://emergingexperiences.com/

Quote
To date, many of the experiments in gestural interface development have not taken into account the hands. Unfortunately, the result is an experience that isn’t precise – users have no context of where they are interacting in the virtual space and 1-to-1 manipulation of objects in a scene proves difficult. By using an clenched hand to signify “grabbing” an object and an open hand to signify “releasing” an object, we are able to create experiences with an higher level of precision which can mimic a touch based experience. In fact, we’ve created a Kinect plugin to enable our entire suite of touch-based experiences to work with gestures – more videos to come!

Gesture-based interaction is great when touch isn’t practical. For instance, on a large screen projected display as shown in the video above it is difficult or physically impossible to control the entire area using touch. Using a technology like Kinect, we can create a virtual canvas in mid-air in front of the user. Interactions within this virtual canvas space are projected into the experience as shown in the DaVinci example.

To be honest, we had a blast playing with this experience. It definitely fulfilled all of our Star Wars fantasies of controlling objects with your mind. We’ll be adding more features in the coming weeks including the Darth Vader death grip. Stay tuned!

Something interesting

Quote
You knew it was coming. It was inevitable. And, yes, I'm talking about Kinect sex.

With almost any hot new tech toy, especially one with a heavy degree of interactivity--which Microsoft's motion-sensitive controller has in spades--someone is going to try to hack it and try to make it X-rated. The Kinect is no exception.

To date, there are no overtly sexual Kinect games on the market, though the folks who put together Kinect MotionSwinger (pretty NSFW) would like you to believe--for a moment at least--otherwise. But that's nothing more than a joke concept for a Kinect sex game put together with some imagery from Second Life.

Still, when it comes to finding ways to utilize new technology for, shall we say, lewd purposes, there are few people more qualified thank Kyle (qDot) Machulis, the dean of the underground sex-tech genre known as tele*****nics.

In a Sunday blog post titled "Kinect Sex--Because you knew I'd make this post sooner or later," Machulis finally brings his trained eye to the project that countless millions were surely waiting for him to get around to and evaluates the kink potential of the device Microsoft is hoping may breathe new life into its Xbox 360 video game console.

The question, as Machulis delicately puts it, is "How can I [have sex]" using Kinect?

As he quickly points out, Kinect most likely wasn't designed for such a purpose, and though the device was made to recognize even minute movements by a person's body, it's geared to look for our larger limbs, like arms and legs.

"Microsoft put a ton of work into making the Kinect track the human body as a whole, so you can play games by jumping and running and generally acting the...fool and feel like you're in the game instead of just sad," Machulis wrote. "Genitalia, for the most part, are not a major geometric feature of the human body when taken in perspective of physical size....Neither are they normally used in the control of video games, be they rated [for all] or [for adults only]."

Machulis said he experimented by waving a sex toy in front of a Kinect, and then by wagging his tongue around in front of it, and concluded that the graphics quality isn't very good, though the device was capable of picking up both the toy and his tongue.

Machulis wrote. "The pattern the Kinect uses to get depth data is made for picking up full bodies to control video games, and therefore isn't quite so good at picking up minutiae about those bodies."

Yet, Machulis also points out that because the Kinect is both very good at picking up hand-based gestures and capable of identifying discrete body parts like "manbreasts" (see video below), there is the distinct possibility that the device could be used to digitize--albeit with less than ideal graphics quality--simulated sexual motions

Wait, so if I want a Kinect I should not expect to find one in post-Christmas Silicon Valley? Can anyone tell me if they're region-specific?
