Viz, sell me on Earthbound.
« on: December 24, 2006, 03:40:13 PM »
I've never played the series, and I'd like to know more.  I figure it's better to get a grip on what the series is like in terms of how a fan (hardcore ;p) sees it rather than to just read on it.

Thanks.

Himuro sucks.

But yes download the rom and zsnes to play it else you want to buy it off ebay for lots of fuck monies $$.

Earthbound takes place in the year 199X which separated it from the fantasy rpgs out at the time, ala final fantasy, chrono trigger, secret of mana, etc. That being, the game is more modern and easier to relate to in that sense.

Anyway, the game starts at night in the small town of Onett, a meteor crashes on the hill nearby your house. You, a young boy named "Ness", wake up from the crash and decide to investigate. Upon reaching the crash site you discover an insect named Buzz Buzz. Buzz Buzz is from 10 years in the future and warns Ness that Giygas, an intergalactic alien rules over earth. Buzz Buzz tells Ness that he and 3 others, "the chosen ones", will go on a quest to find 8 "sanctuaries" containing the power of the earth and use this to defeat Giygas.

I wont spoil much more, but thats the gist of the story.

As for the "humor", some of the people you meet say some humorous things, small puns and jokes. Nothing laugh out loud funny, but it gives the game a certain charm in my eyes. Its a wierd game, for instance the weapons you use are like frying pans and baseball bats and stuff like that. Also some people in your party such as Ness have PSI, magic powers that can be used in battle.

The graphics although considered simple with little special effects in the overworld, are very good in battle. Trippy backgrounds on every battle screen:

minor boss spoiler sorry, youtube has a lack of earthbound fight vids:
Example of a battle:
(he just BARELY heals the second character, you can name anyone anything you want btw)

Lastly my favorite thing about this game as a child was the music, which is awesome. I still listen to a few of the songs for fun sometimes.

I love this game and its sequel which atm is only in Japanese.
Give earthbound a chance and you might like it, but not everyone does.

I think I like the game except for the battle system...nothing person Viz as you're in love with the game, but wtf was that?  It would have been cooler if you could see your characters in battle as well.

I love the battle system, its awesome. Its kind of like first person battling. The rolling health meter gives a fun incentive to heal because of the urgency.

The battles are awesome. Mainly due to the baddies being super appealing. I especially like the hippie that turns up.
