If you can take away the Ewoks and Lucas' fetish with small people saving the universe (OMG don't underestimate the underdog!!), ROTJ was pretty soild for a movie that has to close up alot of storylines.
The opening setting in Jabba's lair was pretty awesome. He decided to bring back Han (which was against Harrison Ford's wishes). The speeder bike scenes were definitely great. Bringing back the Death Star .. not so much. Then the final climax with Darth killing the Emporer was very well done.
I'm not sure what Lynch would have done differently that could have made the movie better (diminish the Ewoks).

As far as Dune. It was a mess structurally. When you have read the book 3 times (as a kid) and are still confused for the first 20 minutes of the movie, something is wrong. Visually, what Lynch did was genius. Great casting (Paul .. not so much), art direction was off the hook and nailed the Bene Gessirit, the Sandworms and the bad guys.
When you compare Dune to other sci fi movies of it's time (Krull, anyone?) It's years ahead of it's time. He at least deserves credit for that. He was just hampered by fitting 6 hours worth of material into 2 1/2 hours. Tough job.
