Gesture based motion controls justify living room gaming enough and could not be replicated on a handheld.

sure they could

So how do you play waggle tennis on a 3ds?

does anybody play waggle tennis any more, now that the sun has set on that particular novelty?

The Wii has proven to me just how much of a scam motion control is. Yeah, motion control tennis is pretty fun for a while, it's something new and all that, but once you get bored with it, and you will? Boredom with motion controls in general soon follow.

I'm still waiting for a full featured one actually. Grand Slam Tennis was atrocious.  Otherwise, motion controls are here to stay folks, there's no doubt about that.

What is the Wii motion control tennis you guys are talking about? Is it tennis from Wii Sports or some standalone game?

This looks great. As long as it has a decent checkpoint system, i don't see how the story mode would be any less suited to handhelds than mercenaries mode. And if the new handhelds support friends lists' i can see very addicting results. If they can also provide a decent download store, i can see most indie, XBLA titles translating well to these handhelds. Can you imagine a Super Meat Boy or Trials HD with friends' leaderboards? It would be really addicting.

The question is, do people still want to pay $250 for the h/w when their phones do all this stuff already? (and yes, 3D phones are on the way)

Sure.

Phone gaming is just not as good. Phone fragmentation, no buttons, not enough Japanese games (the only good games.)

Mobile games are just casual bullshit you play for 10 minutes max. Not as deep as Iwata's vision.
