I actually do look at critical reviews and responses to things. Of course I'm selective within that process. There are some people who's opinions I respect more than others of course. Same with forum impressions. But ultimately of course my playing something and my opinion of it trumps all other opinions.

The other thing about games is that as genres have become more specialized, I pay more attention to people who have more experience in that genre to distinguish things rather than some broad catch all general reviewer.

I know not to listen to somebody like Chick when it comes to a lot of mainstream games, because he fancies himself anti-mainstream. He's not the best person to tell me about those games because he's not looking for the same thing that I am.

I think we all pretty much have an idea of what we like.  So long as someone is able to convey to me that they're into so and so because of this and that, and they're touching on things I'm interested in, I'm alright with taking that person's recommendation seriously, be it Gerstmann, Chick, or even fistfulofscrotum.

3) Vanquish
I love the Platinum Games, the folks who made Vanquish (spoiler: Bayonetta is on tomorrow's list!). But why couldn't they fit more of a gameplay framework around Vanquish's crazy arcade action? I'll beat my head against Bayonetta and Godhand for as along as it takes, but I could hardly muster the desire to play through this short unfocused anime cutscene even once.

What does he mean by 'more of a gameplay framework'?

he says it himself, it's crazy arcade action. You get crazy, over-the-top, fast paced action. And you get to do it using the most refined third-person shooter mechanics ever. So what's the big deal? Did he want it to be less arcadey?

I'm liking this chick dude. RDR is definitely the most overrated game of the year.
