Cats absolutely can distinguish in a mirror at varying levels, that's different, the mirror test is a specific test where the animal has to react and check its own body after seeing something in the mirror. This arguably is a potential near case especially with the one cat who repeatedly checks their human to confirm that all is normal.

Someone pointed out that the "used to" implied story wise it was an ongoing thing and thus not a dealbreaker. If you buy the story. It's a podcast, I'll listen to it someday, so far I'm content with following the hosts.
