Just from the video, it's impossible to know how things preceded this escalation. From the moment someone strikes someone else, it's the initiator's fault. Resorting to violence, especially against someone who is basically stuck as a professional in how they can respond, is really low. The guy was slapped, it looks like he slapped back, and the women escalated by pursuing him into the workspace. Then they were really, badly, viciously surprised that the guy wasn't willing to go two-on-one unarmed.

The clerk takes it much further than it needs to be taken, but I suspect if I knew where a metal rod was, and I was facing two attackers, I'd be grabbing it as well.

The legal standard is generally that one is justified in using necessary force to defend oneself.

In that video, he is justified in using force to defend himself.

But as soon as he turns it into an unholy beatdown with a weapon, it obviously goes beyond that "necessary" threshold.

The charges are warranted.

I can understand both sides but while I can see why files should be charged, I also think special consideration should be given during the circumstances. It's adrenaline/instinct at that point.

I saw the news story on another forum last night and the response was the typical nerd response of bullshit like "if a girl comes after me with a knife I'm going to disarm her and hold her down

I'd have no problem if he used that weapon to knock them down, but continually beating them...bah. I'd imagine there is no difference in the eyes of the law: that's assault whether he hit them once or more than once.

Funnily enough, I found that video on Sherdog, a place as notorious for its misogyny as Stormfront is for racism, and I was like "lol only on this site would people argue that was self defense." Then the GAF thread popped up an hour later

I was fist pumping in celebration of karmic justice until the guy hit them like ten more times after they were down. Yeah, I'm sure they posed a serious threat to his life lying there half-conscious.

The woman screaming STOOOOOOP is pretty funny, though. I realize it's difficult to think rationally when some serious shit happens, but that's about as useful a reaction as just standing there and watching
