Question about the water pipes bursting. Could one avoid it if they turned off the water (I forget the term. Not like your sink, but the actual water switch to your home that shuts it all off or all on.) before the freezing temperatures kicked in and wait until the water unfreezes before turning their water back on?

Yes. You can turn your main off to the house and then run the water in your house to try and empty the system including outside taps which are the most vulnerable.

Right. Yeah had to do that two winter's ago, but it seemed like all the news in the area made sure to let us know. I wonder if in general there was nobody giving out that info in Texas en mass.
I was thinking that maybe that wouldn't be enough with Texas infrastructure as opposed to northern states so was thinking of just killing the water outright.
