Anyhow back to Sony Japan Studio.  I think last gen they had basically 4 quality teams putting out games you'd actually want to play:  Team Siren (Siren 1, 2), Team Ico (Ico, SoTC), Ape Escape Team (AE 2, 3), PD (Gran Turismo 3, 4).

At least 3 of those teams are still alive and making games, even if they are slooooooooowly making them.  Real shame that they gave up on Ape Escape though.  It seems like a huge missed opportunity to not have done a real full length Ape Escape platformer as the MOVE flagship game where you swing around your net catching monkeys while platforming and exploring and fighting bosses, much in the way AE1 was the flagship for Analog control.

We'll see when GT6 hits and GT Vita, but GT5 despite being a complete mess still sold ridiculous numbers.  I think it's the highest selling PS3 game?

People are crazy who pull the "Japanese gaming hasn't gotten worse this gen.  You're just a racist Asian game hating wrpg player with no taste who ignores handhelds!!".  Japan's video game market has been going down the tubes for years now and there's no stopping the plunge.  Yes, the quality games tend to be on handheld, but that's apples and oranges to the point that the GOOD games just aren't being made in bulk.

There has been a trend towards western military games since 9/11. People go nuts when I bring that up, but it's hard to ignore how fantastical stuff took a backseat to espionage stealth and military shooters with the war on terrorism front and center.

That and the creeping slide towards lolianimu Japacrap.  Most socially aware consumers won't buy a game if it makes them feel like a pedophile at the cash register at Gamestop.  If whole genres are dominated by those themes, they're going to say "this isn't for me."  I can't blame people for picking dudebro space marines over 10 year old blue haired lolis with DDD tits who are really 900 year old demons.

I remember when I went and bought Catherine for the 360 because people were hyping the fuck out of it .. I felt like a loser handing that box when I paid for it. And then the game turned out to be gigantic trash! All the so-called deep relationship conversation stuff felt awkward as hell and the puzzle climbing stuff sucked super hard.

Everyone calls them the Kojima company but that was more last gen.  When Kojima Productions started and announced:

-Ac!d 2
-MGS4
-Metal Gear Solid Motion Comics


This gen though, since MGS4 came out, what has Kojima Productions even done Metal Gear related?

-Peace Walker
-An outsourced HD port collection
-A 3DS Port
-A vaporware action game

...and this is over 4 yearspan now.

Konami has no money to even fund MGS this gen.  Let alone their other series like Castlevania, Contra, PES, Suikoden.

Sony press releases use shipped data, not sold. 

At any rate, it's not the best selling PS3 game, and it's a hefty decline from GT4, which itself was a hefty decline from GT3.  The series is definitely losing its relevance.  The declines in NA and Japan have been particularly sharp.

Still doing ok in Yurop, the last Sony homeland.

Publishers put out what will sell or what they they think will sell. Like anybody they are fallible but the reality is that niche titles are generally niche titles.

Some westerns don't like Japanese games and sterotype them. Which is the same thing some japanese fans do concerning all western games. Because when you are not a fan of something its pretty easy to stereotype everything. It easily goes both ways. But the facts are the facts. It's not shocking in a western culture that we now see western games dominating in the same way that the reverse situation is occurring in Japan. What is there to argue about?  Subjective taste debates over generalized entire markets?

I guess I just find these arguments pointless. None of this is going to change the taste of the masses which direct the flow of where dollars are spent with publishers. The clock isn't going to suddenly to be set back to 1992.
