The most annoying thing is that people just make claims, all high and mighty, and then disappear. F#A#Oo said it was obvious why men were required to attend friday sermon while women was not, but never returned to explain when me and others said it wasn't obvious at all. Annoying snipers who do nothing to foster discussion or expunge presumptions (assuming that is their intention).

Also, what is this arms race of prettiness? Is it related to the boob job thread? because I avoided that due to all the new dick shouts. ;-/

Arms race talk is just me attempting to worm my way into the conversation about western standards of beauty being equivalent, or similar to, Islamic standards of modesty.

Ottoman Scribe really pisses me off. He is clearly knowledgeable about Islam stuff, and will happily give you way too much information if it suits his case, but sometimes he knows a good deal more than he lets on and is more than happy to withhold information if he thinks somebody will find it distasteful. Or redirect questions he really knows the answer to to some obscure Islamic scholar who does not post on GAF. The man is pathologically dishonest. Sometimes I really wish I hadn't been permed - I fed his guts to him in the Official Islamic thread and I'd love to do it again.

Ottoman is a convert. And typically so, he's very invested in his new-found religion. He also clearly desires to be respectful (or perceived as such, at the very least) but when faced with people who don't respect him/his values he goes all passive-aggressive and snide. Which is very common with religious folk in debates, as if it's a proper way to retain your image of respectfulness while voicing your distaste for your opponent. I do not care for it.

That has more to do with the segregation of people when they pray. The notion that men are required to attend a sermon that women are not seems to suggest (at best) to me that as long as the head attends the hand does not need to. Wrath said something about Bedouin tribalism, which I'm not familiar with, but reading a little now it seems a caste system based on ancestry and the belief that group X is "chosen people". that always works out well.

Most OTs don't seem neutral at all. Most of them are masturbation material for those already fans of the game. So, who gives a shit if you make an OP poking fun at Mass Effect 3? At least it'll be a change of pace and doesn't have an impact on someone liking or disliking the game.

Putting aside for a moment the childish glee I get from people being upset about trivial things they are far too invested in; the way SomethingAwful does their mega threads is probably optimal. There is lots of text, but it's text that is useful. Look at the OP for their DOTA2 mega thread for example. I didn't know what DOTA really was, and how it was played, but that post and the link to the DOTA2 wiki was very helpful and I feel like I have a grasp of it now and I was able to watch a match from the DOTA2 invitational tourney Valve held and I understood what the fuck was happening. somewhat.

Just saw this sorry. There's a great deal of pressure to look certain ways, buy certain shit and portray ourselves in a certain manner. I've met plenty of women who rise above this bullshit, but it might be because I go to an art school and the women there are typically of a different mind set (except for fashion majors, fuck those douches). We're in constant competition with one another regardless of whether we want to embrace it or not, due to the media pressure that rides on our insecurities. Skin not perfect? Buy this moisturizer. Tits not big enough? Get implants or wear this particular bra. Not happy with your face? Wear this lipstick, eye liner and mascara. Then there is the barrage of damn near impossible beauty standards. Even the most beautiful models aren't thin or perfect looking enough either, as we've seen with ridiculous shoops. All of this feeds into this greater insecurity that doesn't necessarily go away when men show interest in us because those previous messages are so fucking insidious.

Well yeah the beauty industry is only a part of it. I think if a girl is raised in a certain way to just shrug that bullshit off, she can handle the barrage of shallow standards and not feel obligated to buy into it. I don't see it going away any time soon either but if more girls/women are raised to give more of a shit about their personality than their vanity it would help matters greatly.
