I h8ed how dragon quest 7 forced you to find ALL the shards in each "level" to move on to the next. imo if a game FORCES you to comb every inch of its world to proceed, that's almost the opposite of exploration, in that exploration to be fun should feel like you're given freedom to explore the parts that interest you to some extent, and occasionally skip things - a game that requires 100% coverage of an ostensibly "open" world might as well be 100% linear, insofar as it's dictating a specific approach to exploring its world

I'm trying to think if there was ever any time I replayed a game that I walked away with a different opinion, and I'm drawing a blank. Sure there's quite a few games, like SMB3, SMW and LttP where I've re-played them recently in the past few years where I find myself impressed at its game design or some other trait, but these are games that I've already loved to begin with, and so it's not so much a change in opinion. Same goes for games that I'm not as hot on, like Majora's Mask or SSBB. I'll probably appreciate some individual aspect but overall, they most likely would remain where they are.

I haven't finished Skyward Sword yet (and I have a LONG ways to go), but hypothetically, even if it ends up disappointing me (which very well may be th case, sadly), I seriously doubt that I'll be feeling that TP's suddenly a marvelous game again. I could be disappointed with SS yet still rank it above TP, bu again that wouldn't make a lick of difference. I like what I like or dislike what I dislike, and it's pretty much it.

TP is a great massive vast game it's just that you have to put up with a 5 hour+ tutorial before you get to do anything cool thus rendering it unreplayable. Nice design work there, Ninty. Wonder why the core kids don't give a fuck about you anymore.

The people you see flip flopping on whether they consider a Zelda game good or not basically mean that due to a new Zelda's changes, they have more appreciation for the things that were changed before they were changed that they didn't even notice they liked before the new Zelda came out. That's my explanation, anyways. People hated Wind Waker for the cut content and shoehorned Triforce hunt, but didn't realize they liked the world, characters, and mythos. People hated TP for being a ripoff of OoT with a crappy long tutorial and bad Twilight Realm sections, but didn't realize they liked the awesome dungeons, story, Midna character progression, etc. People currently hate SS for its handholding, padding and waggle, but don't even realize they like what the game does right at this time, and they probably won't until the next Zelda comes out and changes that.

Or....tastes change and sometimes you gain new appreciation for shit. It's not that complex. For example, when I was a kid, I thought 2001: A Space Odyssey was boring. But when I grew up and actually gained a modicum of taste, it became one of my favorite movies. The same thing extends towards stuff like alcohol. Sometimes you don't have a taste for something, but the more time you give it, the more it sticks with you. Sometimes, you gain new appreciation for things. This works for just about everything. My favorite color used to blue, now it's purple.

I used to find Majora's Mask tedious, but I replayed it a few years ago and now it's my favorite Zelda. Sometimes people are open-minded enough to admit they're wrong, or open-minded enough to give things multiple shakes and allow for new interpretations.
