women's public bathrooms are worse than men's public bathrooms. by far.

This is one of the reasons why I hate my own gender.  I don't know about the rest of them, but when I was a little girl, I was taught to flush and wash when I was done.

I knew I would get some interesting responses if I approached gaf with the Skylanders issue, but having my post reworded into Activision PR is something I never expected.

I'm against consumerism and what it is in America. I'm against taking advantage of the public for profit increase. (But not against profits.) I'm against on-disc dlc and hiding it behind kids.  I'm against the idea of the consumer serving the company. I doubt there's no relation to raising a public to be consumers who worship corporations and future economic problems.

I liked turtles and transformers.

but

People aren't buying these to play with them as you would a TMNT. They are not action figures. The whole excitement over them is because of their relation to the game. They are on-disc content unlocks.

I went over all this in the thread btw.

when I was a kid, I would have loved something like this. so what if it hooks up with the game?

If you're against this, then surely you were against stuff like Nintendo Power and Gamepro and EGM.

Also, just because I was a sucker for something at age 10 doesn't mean I should be a sucker for it as a grown adult that understands more.

I'm not giving a pass to turtles or transformers. I just admit that I like them. I am well aware of the harms of consumerist mentality because I was stuck in it.

If the content was separate and on the character then I'd be more okay with it, though it would still be a pretty fiendish plan.

Basically, it seems you are against companion pieces that help drive the sales of the main object a. [a] being Skylanders. If you're against buying side things - in this case, being toys - you must also hate other forms of products that work as companion pieces, notably strategy guides, magazines;et al. What is the difference between buying Zelda: A Link to the Past, and getting stuck, only to get the new Nintendo Power guide to help you get through it and buying an extra product that adds more content to your original product? Nothing at all. Because money will still be spent.

Between the ages of 8 and 10 or so, I was deep into Street Fighter. We'd hold tourneys at local arcades, I'd watch the corny cartoon show on Sundays when I wasn't busy going to church. I'd get Street Fighter action figures because fuck yeah, Street Fighter. M. Bison, nicca! If those toys allowed me to add new stuff Street Fighter II for Genesis it would be the best game ever.

Do I really need to explain the difference here? Companion piece? Here Himu, here's a five dollar ho. Oh you want a blowjob? Opening her mouth costs another $10. The blowjob not good enough? It's another $10 if you want her to slurp harder. You want to see tits? It's $5 per peice of clothing she takes off. Wait, you're complaining? But you just bought her a diet coke!

We are talking about product a and how the products that accompany product a affect a mass market. in this case, you get more bang for your buck if you get some action figures. In our case, most of us got more bang for our buck if we had subscriptions to EGM. The point is, there is no difference between the two because they are both examples of "consumerism" as money is still being consumed. If you are against one, you can't be against the other. Especially when you consider that an action figure has a hell of a lot more use than adding extra content to a vidya game, particularly for children.

In other words, what is the difference between:

- a kid seeing the new Fartblast: A New Super Hero film and wanting the Fartblast: A New Super Hero GAME after seeing the film?
- a kid wanting a new Fartblast action figure after having seen the new Fartblast film
- a kid wanting a new Fartblast dvd after having seen the new Fartblast film
- a kid wanting a Fartblast costume after having seen the new Fartblast film

And buying an action figure to accompany the new Fartblast video game that Charlie Rottenpants just got for Christmas?

Absolutely fucking nothing.

Though each and every item may have different prices, the act is still an act of consumption. You can't ignore the other ways people consume but then somehow get offended when some company thinks it's neat to hook up action figures with your video game. The very thing has already happened, just in different forms.

Himu, you get less bang for your buck because of the figures. The figures are a big part of the game. The figures ARE a part of the game. I don't need a strat guide to access something in the game, it just helps me access it. I can get it without the strat guide.

Well pardon my ignorance on Skylanders - sorry, that's the thing when you're adult and you don't have children yet - but how is that any different than a lot of other toys lines used when I was a kid that said "collect them all today"?

Same line of marketing, different approach.

Marketing, consumerism, and advertising have certain evils, but this isn't one of them.

The other thing is that this is a way for the industry to increase the price of a game. If this takes, and it's really taking with Skylanders, they can argue that the people are willing to pay hundreds for a single software title so they should stop charging $50/60 per game. Of course, the public isn't as wise to the fact that they are paying that much for a game.

Games aren't going to go up in price because of skylanders. The market isn't even supporting retail prices now except for blockbusters. skylanders is a fad of the moment aimed at the least discerning portion of the market and parents willing to indulge that portion to shut up their kids for a bit.

We'lll see. EA is going to try something similar in Mass Effect. I yet don't know if the content you get is on disc or not.

There will always be gimmicks to try to get more money. DLC, online passes, preorder bonuses, etc. I'm not saying companies aren't going to try to screw people in the future. What I'm saying is sticking action figures in mainstream games shouldn't be your biggest worry concerning gaming. It's probably a very niche crowd this approach works on. Skylanders is just targeting the niche of kids.

That niche is pretty huge Stoney. Pokemon-huge.

But its kids games. And kids games have always sucked anyway outside of Nintendo and some other exceptions. Look at the THQ lineup for years. It just doesn't seem very relevant to me because I wouldn't buy Skylander and I wouldn't buy Pokemon either and I don't have kids.

Something like this

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-apple-earns-20120125,0,2362635.story

at a corporate level is much more likely to impact consoles or gaming or what constitutes those since we are talking billions versus millions of dollars.

Stoney: Judging from that thread, all the pokemon trained kids are happily blowing their money on this for their offspring and are somewhat jealous they never had such a thing. I can easily see the practice spreading and then at some point companies dropping the bomb that they expect people to pay hundreds for a game because they've been doing it without knowing it.

Etiolate, using your logic on market trends, due to Poke'mon's success, all games will have two (even three) versions of the same game but with slight menial differences being merely completely different poke'mon (or in this case, levels) to conquer and master. Guess what? Poke'mon is over a decade old and this has yet to happen. Sometimes gimmicks are just gimmicks.

True. I just worry about this because of wider spread practices of hiding the true cost of a game. This game sort of trains kids to accept this sort of thing.

From what I can tell, they come out in controlled "waves". It's DLC with the ability to manipulate supply and demand by the content provider. It's Pokemon + TMNT Figures + paid on-disc unlocks. They also have 3-packs, so there is the chance they will profit off you buying the same figure twice if you can't find the one you want in the 3-pack individually. Of course, you could probably resell your extras easily in the market right now.

I can't see Skylanders toys retaining any value, they will die like Beanie Babies and all that shit.

You have to maximize by getting the hard to find shit now and selling it.

Basically this. They're selling out because it got caught in a buying frenzy that Activision wasn't ready for, not because it's some rare, obscure toy that will be worth a ton in 20-30 years.

I'm also kinda wondering about your fixation on the "paying for content that's on the disc" point - if they made the same exact game with the same exact unlock mechanism, but instead of shipping the data with the disc they had the unlock trigger a network download (of more or less the same data), would that move it from evil to non-evil? Despite it being exactly the same in every way, both in terms of end-user experience and production, other than making the unlocks less convenient and reliable?

It would be at least paying for something that is being added to the product you already bought, instead of paying again for something that already exists in the product. It doesn't make it good, because it would be a reworking of still trying to sell you less game for more, but it wouldn't be so blatantly disregarding the consumer. There's something about having the disc already have the data and then having people pay for it again that says "You idiots slurp my cum."  The way they are doing it is also deceptive.
