In Santa Cruz, I'd get dirty looks for walking behind a woman on a path, even though it was a commonly traveled path. There were very few black students on campus there, but if I found one, I'd walk close to a black guy. The girls didn't give scared/dirty looks then, mostly because they were afraid of seeming racist.

Lots of black dudes feel this way. I don't like walking behind white people in general in isolated areas and especially white women. I think I'm more nervous than them because of my fear of anything happening and me somehow getting in trouble for it. Patrice O'Neal had a bit about it that nailed exactly how I feel.

I also gave up on the anime, 30% of every episode was wasted on recaps. Entire episodes are wasted running around. Basically they're so worried about catching up to manga that it became tedious and unsatisfying.

the manga, however, is rightfully the greatest shonen series ever. oda is a cultural genius, and i would let him dress me up like nami and stick his yeller penis in me. i would even name the butt baby luffy.

There are good shounen.  Not a lot mind you.  But there are good ones like One Piece, Hikaru no Go, Parts of Kenshin, Parts of Naruto, the first half of Death Note, one arc in Bleach.  If you count non-jump Shounen, then stuff like Fullmetal Alchemist, parts of Soul Eater, uh there are good ones but I haven't read shounen for a while so I'm having a hard time remembering them.

You know, the reason why there are a limited amount of good shounen manga when compared to other genre of manga is because shounen stuff runs FOREVER and there are only so many slots in the shounen magazines for series.  So there just aren't that many shounen manga made per decade compared to other types of manga where stuff runs for 1 volume or 3 volumes and that's that.  A lot of shounen series run 20,30,40,50+ volumes over a 10 year+ span.

@Beb like I said there are exceptions, but they are few and far between. The genre itself is mostly garbage because a lot of them follow the same cookie cutter overarching story and generally have those same 5 shonen tropes thrown in ad nausea. I'd much rather watch Antiques Bakery than most of the crap in the shounen genre, granted though when shounen is done right it can be fucking amazing.

FOR CHILDREN.

I know Death Note was in shonen jump, but it felt more like a supernatural thriller mystery where all the culprits were known.  I liked THAT.

Also I can't stand the One Piece manga.  Dude's art is way too busy for a black and white format and it looks like a hot mess.  I had to spend more time than I wanted deciphering many panels enough to understand what was being presented.

edit:  My point about Death Note is that  I don't see it as shonen, as although it shares few traits, it doesn't overwhelmingly adhere to the shonen template which I find obnoxious at this point.  So suck it, robo!

You have not read One Piece. One Piece does not have power levels, and the main characters have lost repeatedly for multiple arcs. The main character almost dies from poisoning in a recent arc, and the only way to fight the dude who beat him was use to use creative strategy that involved someone else's powers. Even then, they couldn't beat him, because he's a poison man. What beats poison? Very few things. One Piece doesn't work on power levels since most fighters have devil fruits. Crocodile's power is sand. His weakness is water, which weakens his sand shell, allowing you to kick his ass. Luffy uses BLOOD, which has water in it, to ravage his asshole. Not use a super saiyan upgrade. Much more, most if not all villains in One Piece are not villain of the week and are recurring characters. You have the same characters fighting for the same shit,and they pop in the story very frequently. In fact, the real big bad fight won't happen until near the end of the series, and he has been built up for years.

STFU.  I've read/watched enough One Piece to know it merely substitutes the same tropes with slightly altered mechanisms.  The devil fruits ARE the power level/chakra shenanigan tripe that plague the genre.  Its the same shit as in Naruto whereas he 'creatively' beats guys by abusing his clone gimmick over and over but uh this time its Luffy trying out another stretch Armstrong technique.  I also watched that bout of poisoning and its the same thing that happened in various other shonen.  Oh noes, are hero is debilated!  But wait I have a special treatment, it'll probably kill him.  Also he'll need a (insert long ass period) to recover if he survives.  Hero does it in two days.  Astounding.  Unless you read enough other stuff to understand its yet another overused scenario in the medium.
