I'm not arguing that. Most anime is crap. But that doesn't mean it isn't a topic worth discussing, nor that there aren't good animes. Anime? Animes? Bah.

MLP has a highly enthusiastic fanbase of a certain type. That type often appears in a Kon film as a character.

I was just about to mention that. Having re-watched Millennium Actress I can't help but chuckle at the thought that it surpasses the top tier episodes of MLP. I say "top tier" because there are certainly the more traditional romp episodes that are just a typical cartoon for "children." But the best MLP episodes such as Applebuck Season are not only great episodes, but some of the best on television today.

Evangelion is a show with a bunch of interesting ideas. The mech scenes are mostly there for character development and are a tiny fraction of the story. The bulk of the story is a character study, and an analysis of all the characters and how extremely fucked up individuals they are. Shinji, the main character - the dude who beat off  in that video - is basically a dude who was abandoned by his father at a young age to help develop the Evangelion project - the mechs. He is a very fucked up individual. Most, if not all of the characters on Evangelion are not likable, and that's kind of the point, as their lives spiral out of control as the show continues forward.

The problem is that the show mixes a bunch of psuedo-intellectual crap into the story to make it seem more deep, and far more pretentious than it should be. The show itself isn't bad.

There are far more dark mecha anime out there and I'd say even Gundam is darker than Eva depending on the series. It's not "The Wire" of mecha anime but it certainly propelled a specific new kind of anime television series.

I remember liking the first 16 or so episodes, except for the parts where what's his face was being a pussy. Then the last few episodes went off the rails. Just completely bonkers. Almost as if they coincided with the writer's LSD abuse.

I thought Eva was great for...the first 22 or so episodes, but after that it's shitsville.

End of Evangelion, however, is fucking amazing.

I like both, well I liked them before they both turned to shit. I love me some shonen, One Piece is still amazing!!

Bleach has always been pretty bad. The first arc didn't seem bad  but that's because there was the expectation that it would get better.

I don't like it because it places kooky characters, slapstick comedy, and brutalizing filler (that makes DBZ seem like DBZ Kai) over efficient plot development and character growth. And I've watched a ton of it (mostly because it's on on the background on Saturdays, and the openings are always god-tier.) It sort of reminds me of Pokemon in that stuff does happen, and characters do grow, but it's lost in the total abject monotony. Most people I know who like Bleach like it for the cool/kooky characters and nothing else, in fact most of them don't even watch most of the show.

Shame, because the characters are neat and it has neat ideas, but it's all just handled so poorly. It fails completely as a shonen -- I'd even say Sailor Moon was a better shonen.

I've watched less Naruto but that series seemed like it actually had some stuff going on.

Nah, Naruto is at it's core a really good shounen series, but it's been brought down by the fact that almost every character who is not Naruto himself is pretty awful, that the author loves to focus on these characters instead of the title character, and that the story fell apart after the halfway point.

If someone made an edited version of the Naruto manga where they cut out all the useless/bad crap (aka, all the sasuke chapters), it'd be a great shounen series.

There is good manga in there and the art and action are really nice, which makes it work well for the CC2 games.


Otoh, Bleach has no redeeming values at all since the Soul Society arc besides its art and action.  The characters/story are trash and the manga will keep going forever with no point because he just makes shit up as he goes.
