Evillore essentially killed the poli-gaf thread by moving it to the community thread. The decision makes no sense and the thread has taken a nose dive in terms of posts. Each US politics thread would typically get dozens of pages over the coarse of a few weeks, especially now that primary season is upon us; currently the community thread is stuck at a small number of pages, and many of the thread's long standing posters are absent.

To make matters worse, the OT is now muddied with a variety of stupid threads (usually revolving around "Republican says something stupid" terms) that would have gone into one thread before.

I really hope the hip hop thread doesn't get the same treatment. It's my favorite community/thread on GAF and we've done a great job nurturing it. The forum's most popular non-gaming threads should be in the OT, end of story.

I get the reasoning but the implementation is poor. Best to have dedicated "News" and "Longer Running" forums if you want to go that route.

RSS feeds (etc) are for news, forums are (primarily) for communities.

I figured rejiggering the online board into "community" was an attempt at moving all those sorts of threads over into one place. They haven't really moved that many though, mainly gaming |OT|s, so instead of revitalizing the third sub-forum it's just a dumping ground.

jeez, defensive much? I actually post in the community forum a lot due to the SC2 thread, so I'm no stranger to the place. But I just find it inconsistent that a handful of threads have been determined to be "communities" and thus regulated there, whereas a vast majority of community threads remain on the OT. Why are sports threads on the OT? GAF-hop, the LA thread, the black community thread, etc etc; hell, why not put the coffee thread in community, if that's the criteria.

The OT should be more than vapid news stories, gossip, and anti-religion threads.

I had one technic set. It was a jeep buggy thing. I got it assembled and the wheels moved and all. It was cool, but those were a bit more specialized. The best thing about legos was taking your pirate ship and turning it into a space cadillac.

A friend of mine had a great big suitcase filled with K'nex. They were great for building vehicles and steering them down flights of stairs so they'd shatter in a big spectacle. Never saw much use for them otherwise.
