i think most of what i hate about neogaf is hype. like even just looking at a thread nerds will get hyped and then adjust expectations for what a thread should be without even reading it. like that zelda fan made game thread the other day. why can't you just click on a thread and see what's in it and then respond (or, more importantly, choose not to respond if you don't have anything to say)

like people are calling dibs on official threads months in advance and generating tons of content and pages of posts that no one will read all in the name of being excited to do something else (play a video game). i mean if you want to talk about video games, that's great. i like video games. but the whole hype culture is pervasive on the forum and it seems to bleed into every thread and every poster and who cares.. then the concept of "trolling" is introduced and you just start to realize these people are too fragile or too brainwashed to actually have a thought or share a moment or actually participate in a conversation without sounding like a huge nerd.

I would say its easy to feel that estrangement if atheism is only defined by people on reddit or neogaf. But in real life Atheism is nothing like that. Not to mention a lot of it depends on where you live. It's easy to feel that way if you live in a fairly liberal place that is already pretty secular. If you don't then all that religion stuff is in full force and telling someone you are atheist is an easy way to get socially ostracized.
