I wanted to give my two cents, and as expected the outrage machine takes no prisoners. Don't get me wrong, CFA's owner is a pos and they do support bigotry. But I'm not going to support punishing individual franchises because the corporate boss is an asshole. I'd eat at a CFA with no qualms.

There's really no easy way in the world of large multinationals to avoid giving money to companies that do bad things [or are owned/operated by people who do bad things].

I'm mostly in agreement. Personally, if you believe strongly in the issue being discussed, I think it's perfectly reasonable to advocate boycotting Chick Fil-A. However, I'm not really on board with the brow beating going on in that thread wherein if you choose to patronize the place in spite of knowing what the owners do with their money, then you are a selfish, anti-gay marriage asshole. In that sense, I agree with your sentiment.

And that's what is happening in the thread. I don't know whether it's true or not, but I've heard people are being banned for posting about eating there recently.

Multi billion dollar corporations finance a host of things most people wouldn't support, yet never receive backlash. I'd imagine a lot of the most adamant anti-CFA posters in that thread are using Apple products manufactured by Asian slaves in some inhumane factory. A lot of beer companies finance anti-weed propaganda. The list is endless.

And instead of addressing that point, the thread simply reacts with the group outrage that has become the forum's trademark over the last two years.

To be fair, the point has been addressed with the suggestion being that the situations aren't directly analogous, and I understand their point. However, I do agree with you in the sense that I don't necessarily reach their conclusion that there are different burdens of responsibility on the consumer. That's mainly because I don't really put any burden on the consumer.

To be more clear, I can understand an individual making the decision themselves to not buy a Chick Fil-A sandwich while still buying Apple products, for instance. However, when judging the motivations of others, I don't agree with the idea that it's okay to draw these lines where we can condone purchase of electronics made in sweat shops but condemn individuals for purchasing a chicken sandwich.

People are outraged that you have not taken your outrage to the highest possible peak. I find the whole episode hilarious (not the issue, the Neogaf reaction). The rage fueled forum warriors aren't the type that will add value to this debate nor spark meaningful change. If you really cared, organize a mass letter writing exercise for example. Write to your congressman, write to the newspapers, write to the church boards, write to the chicken people, let them know how you feel and perhaps the volume of, and weight of the words contained within said letters may reach someone there.

Calling for a boycott makes you the antagonist in this piece. By all means let yourself be heard, but sometimes you have to move on and direct your energy towards more fruitful avenues. Try to spend your energy on people neutral to the situation, persuade them to help turn the chicken people's opinions into a minority opinion. Do it through dialogue, not antagonistic, outraged actions. I expect better from people.

EDIT: Fixed my language a little, have a headache forgive me.

Eh the people coming in the thread to make that argument are only doing so to be contrarian. I don't see them normally caring about where any of their shit is made or under whatever conditions. Plus dubious business practices aren't really something normal people can change without government assistance/oversight, but you can definitely get your chicken elsewhere or make it yourself.

As I said, I understand and largely agree with the sentiment. Personally, if you consider yourself an advocate of gay rights, I think it would behoove you to reconsider shopping at Chick Fil-A. However, if at the end of the day, you opt not to politicize where you purchase from and decide to conclude that a chicken sandwich is just a chicken sandwich, I don't really see the need to browbeat that person and deride anyone patronizing the place as a selfish asshole.

Mind you, I'm not talking about the people who were flaunting how delicious the sandwiches they just bought were, or were boasting how Chick Fil-A's bigotry made it a more attractive place to shop. I'm just saying that I don't personally hold consumers accountable for apathy in regards to what the owners do with their profits.

You can also buy different electronic devices but I'm guessing you won't. Which is my point about turning outrage into a buffet where you pick and choose what you want to go crazy over

Ultimately it comes down to choice, and to be honest I don't think either is "wrong" overall.

This focus on the market for black people caused some consternation within the company and among its affiliates. It did not want to seem focused on black customers for fear white customers would be pushed away.[8] In a meeting at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, Mack tried to assuage the 500 bottlers in attendance by pandering to them, saying: "We don't want it to become known as a distinguished black fellow drink."[11] After Mack left the company in 1950, support for the black sales team faded and it was cut.

If PD were alive in 1950 and had the awareness to choose the products he supports, he'd still totally be buying Pepsi after this statement.

If the corporate owner was racist but individual franchises were just regular franchises? Yes. I would hold the exact same position. I am not going to hold individual franchises to the fire over corporate.

CFA's owner is a pos and they do support bigotry. But I'm not going to support punishing individual franchises because the corporate boss is an asshole. I'd eat at a CFA with no qualms.

To me it's not about punishing individual franchises, but about rewarding others for not going out of their way to support bigotry and flaunt that support. The industry is all about advertisement, and some are foolish enough to dabble in negative advertisement. For example, the closest CFA to my place is one at a nearby mall's food court, where 10 other restaurants who weren't on the news recently and serve food just as shitty as CFA are competing for my attention. People sometimes can't process how easy it is to make that decision, how little it takes to sway someone in one direction or the other. Because at the end the product is always something I'll consume in a few minutes, only to hate myself for eating it later, even more on its way out. I can never see myself standing in the middle of that food court for a good 5 minutes reviewing my political agendas and having these internal debates, but that's just me.

And by the same token, I really hold no grudges against people who I see at the CFA counter. Maybe they have no idea, maybe they don't care, or maybe they support their views, but it's alright. Just don't go out of your way and spread a picture of you buying food from there with the tagline "supporting great family businesses" out of spite like a passive aggressive teenager, because then I'll call you a cuntface.

I agree with this outside of the name calling aimed at Palin. It's pretty obvious what she was doing by purchasing the food. My argument is that not everyone who eats at CFA now is doing that, and should not be demonized or criticized.

I had CFA quite a bit when I was in school.  They had decent buffalo chicken sandwiches that I could just grab n' go between classes.

What the President/CEO/whomever says about homos has no bearing on whether I eat there or not.  Besides, if I were to really scrutinize the business practices of products I purchase (*cough* Apple), then I'd be living a pretty monastic life.
