There's this street corner in Downtown Sacramento with two popular gay bars right across from each other. Even if you don't hear the music, you can smell the rush of cologne. It smells like a bottle of Brut is buttfucking a bottle of Tommyboy.

Actually house music was appreciated by many different people, even black people at one point. It's just that in the US it kind of was regulated as gay shit, whereas in Europe everyone continued liking it regardless. Now of course it's dominating US radio and creeping into every genre of music for better and worse.

House music was created by black people and so many classics are hugely based on soul and funk records. From a historic point of view, House is just as black as Hip Hop.

But yeah, nowadays house music is such a global thing (you can find South African house music called "kuduro" even), pretty amazing that it once came out of gay Chicago clubs. The whole "disco sucks" rally in Chicago was supposedly due to homophobia and racism (disco, the forefather of house, was also very popular with the black and/or gay community).
