I only read the first couple posts by lexi, and that was enough.  Completely oblivious about the nature of the prison system, especially in the outrage and framing it as a "transexual" issue, rather than a "prison FUCKING SUCKS" issue.  I imagine that if I read the whole thread I would be raging badly....

Watched a ton of that documentary today tho.  Fascinating stuff.  Even if the host is....err....not exactly the best personality for establishing a rapport with the prisoners....

I've never made negative remarks about her or transpeople, I've been pretty consistently pro gay rights there, etc. And yet I'm apparently a heartless bigot because I don't think transsexuals should be given preferential treatment in prison.

When you go to prison you lose a host of rights. Is it unfortunate a trans person wouldn't be allowed to continue hormone treatment? Of course. But I don't see that as some unjust act of hatred for them. Everyone who goes to prison has their life put on pause. Trans people are no exception.

I agree with you that it's preferential treatment. Just the fact that the state has to spend any time at all on the issue means they're treated differently. Everybody else goes to court, gets convicted, goes to jail. The US has a hard time even dealing with and providing proper medication for what would otherwise be a normal prisoner with no other preferential treatment. People die in US prisons due to insufficient medical attention. It sucks and it shouldn't happen, but it does. Do you really expect the state's/federal employees involved in the case to educate themselves and their staff on HRT and then actually administer it? Yea, that's a long ways away. They'd have a better chance being separated from the rest of the group (hence, preferential treatment).

She can go on and on with these hypothetical situations all day, but the chances are slim that a transgender will get sent to a maximum security prison for a crime they "accidentally" committed. "BUBUBUBUT IT'S A HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION!!!!!" ugh... yea but it's not rational. Here's a hypothetical: I go to jail and the fucking Kool-Aid Man busts through my cell wall and I decide to walk out, then get picked up - Should I get in big trouble for "escaping"? Oh that won't happen you say? BUT YOU DIDN'T ADDRESS MY HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION!!!!! If they're in the big house, they most likely fucking deserve it, just like all the other rapists, murderers and child molesters in there. What did transsexuals do 100 years ago? They didn't start HRT and surgeries. I understand that resembling your gender is important to your identity, but if you know you're going to jail, why continue with that process? I understand there are very negative side effects from being taken off HRT, especially abruptly, but you don't just go to sleep and wake up in prison. Usually you have many months before you actually go to prison for a crime. I'm sure in that time frame, your doctor can slowly decrease HRT so that going to prison isn't such an abrupt change for them. Some people have started that process while in jail then later transferred to women's prison. I'll have to find the article, but it was in the UK. The guy was in jail for murder of his bf and attempted rape of a woman! Then he started process of becoming a women, and at some point was transferred to the women's prison. HE WAS IN JAIL FOR TRYING TO RAPE A WOMAN. WTF?

I think lexi and others need to continue their research. In less than 5 minutes I found absolutely disgusting articles that are backed by UN reports regarding women's prisons. The overcrowding, the unsanitary conditions, the complete disregard for medical attention, women being raped and sexually abused usually by guards, lack of supplies to the point where women will prostitute for toilet paper, the fact that the UN has to mandate that shackling women during childbirth in prison shouldn't happen anymore but still does... I guess I'm just confused as to why the mtf transsexuals would prefer women's prisons. I'm sure men's prisons are bad too, but damn. Women make up a large part of the population and they're treated as badly as transsexuals, who are a small part of the population. If we can't fix the huge problem, how are we going to fix a smaller, case-by-case issue? My car transmission is fucked, but let's get that oil changed, mmkay?

I think isolation is probably best case scenario and would solve a lot of problems in these rare situations. But how they can deny that this isn't preferential treatment is beyond me. Maybe that's what they need to survive, and maybe I agree that they need some preferential treatment to survive, but because someone mentions that it's preferential treatment, they're basically a transpeople hatin' bigot. In a county where women in prison are raped by male guards, get pregnant, and then have illegal, forced sterilizations after childbirth, all while shackled, HRT for transsexuals may seem like a minor issue to the court system.

But dare not say, "Hey, the prison system in the US is just fucked, period." I know you thought it, you ignorant bigot rooting for the rape of all transsexuals.
