fgc drama is the worst drama. feels like highschool all over again.

Aren't a bunch of those people in their late twenties and early 30s by now too?

FGC GAF is not really FGC, aside from a few guys who aren't just gaffers-- haunts, bluerei, markman, etc.  They mostly watch from the outside and talk theory and occasionally go to events.

the actual FGC drama is usually just some WWE type shit.  sometimes for the purpose of drumming up bets for money matches

I dunno; I actually met a couple of fgc gaffers at evo a couple years ago, seemed normal enough. but i got the vibe from the whole thing that it was a very insular community with a lot of cliques.

but on the plus side kayo police (i think that's who it was, she was hanging around markman) liked my suit.   

It is but it isn't.  I went to a bunch of locals and a tourney this year-- you pretty much get ignored if you're bad at a game, you can talk to folks if you want to get good and have specific questions, and I'm assuming if you hang around long enough you can make some pals.  Other than that, it is just groups of people who've been playing each other for years.   Pretty much all based on merit of players (despite everyone getting salty and crying cheap after each tourney) and how long you've been around, which I respect.   I talked to some folks about it and apparently people showing up once or twice, making a big scene about how they want to get awesome, then quitting shortly after is a big problem.  You have to keep in mind that the scene has been around since SF2, so a lot of people are sort of cliqued up by now, naturally.  However, everyone seemed to pretty approachable.  If you have questions or something you want to talk about, a lot of the top players and scene guys are pretty approachable.  I had no problems chatting up spooky, jwong, dieminion, sanford, keits, viscant, fooblat, and other guys at UFGT8.

i should get into a sociology grad program and become a FGC specialist and starve to death.

Oh, I'm sure it isn't a problem chatting up the pros. But the rest of the "FGC" is full of assholes or inept social distinguished mentally-challenged fellows that basically treat you like shit because you've been playing for five minutes and dunno what the fuck the training mode/trial mode screen is telling you to do at that moment. Or because you play the game to beat on AI for a bit and want to play super casually and don't want to play 100 hit infinite KO! combo games.

It's kinda similar to Friday Night Magic nerds. Feel self-important because you're playing a "niche"/"was there before it became cool" game and drives people away from being into the game.

And that clique thing is kinda why I haven't gone to local meet-ups more. Well, besides the fact they're SRK kids... and well... I don't really care for SRK.

Well that and there isn't a scene for my animu games. All Marvel 3 and Street Fighter 4 and while those are good, they just don't have the "magic" that Marvel 2/SF3 had for me.

My parents never went that far but I know many kids that saw Santa in their homes and the fights over if Santa was black, white or asian and why he sounded just like their fathers. I think a lot of it is GAF's black and white aspertard mentality.  So to them, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the consumption of marijuana.  Which is fine and I agree with it but their black and white view does not allow them to consider whether intentionally drugging someone might be wrong.  Because some kind of marijuana consumption is good but some marijuana consumption is bad?  Well, they've already filed marijuana away as good consumption so how can there be this bad consumption as well?  Well, it must be the fault of the teacher for eating the brownie then.  That way their little sheltered oversimplistic view on life isn't shattered.

A lot of it comes down to your perception.  In any hobby, when you're a newb, the people are "assholes" because they'll test you or do things in a way that you're not used to and expect you to pick up on the customs eventually.  Some of the people involved won't like you for no reason, some will take every opportunity to one up you, and others will help to an extent.  Most activities and hobbies have a certain entry price before you're in.   FGC has a lot of false bravado and stuff, but in person, it's easy to see a lot of it is just for fun.   People watching streams and commenting online make it seem like 1000x more dramatic and serious than it is.

Not that stupid shit doesn't happen, but there's dumb shit in any hobby I've been involved in.

Point. But I dunno. It's hard to describe what exactly in the fighting game circle just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's the college-age kids thing, maybe it's the "srs business" SRK shitting-on-anything-non-Capcom thing. Maybe it's a mix of the two. I just can't get into that scene while enjoying the genre.

I like weed and think drug laws are bullshit, but I also think there are circumstances where you kind of deserve what's coming to you because it's just so incredibly stupid.  This is one of them

that's part of why I wouldn't try to get like super involved...it's mostly early-to-mid 20s folks.  I can blend in with the mid-20s guys, but it's still a bit past my time to get dedicated to it.  To get good, it's a commitment and takes up a chunk of your time, which sucks even though it's fun.  plus, i like playing other games too much.  I might still hit up tournies around here to spectate.  The local meet ups were getting a bit awkward since I was incredibly bad at UMVC compared to everyone and wasn't getting any better    

That game is complete bullshit though, which is why it's so fun to watch and play.  One guy leaves incredibly happy, the other is incredibly pissed.

If they have clean records I bet they get off with probation/community service and suspended jail sentences/felony convictions.  If they stay out of trouble for X time they'll be clear if they get back into trouble they get nailed.  Plus the school boots them if it hasn't already.

I don't miss having a huge collection at all.  By keeping my game collection all digital it makes things much easier.  Only things I do hang onto are special controllers since they can't be replicated digitally.  But steering wheels and Steel Battalion controller takes up a lot of space.
