Well, yes. The problem isn't exclusive to fighting games. But the "bad apple/dick to good people" ratio is skewed slightly higher in the fighting game circles. It doesn't help that those players aren't condoned like they would be in other genres or games. The comments in that article just prove him right: They want to keep their "good ol' boy club" image and that's exactly why no one will take them seriously. Half the time a fighting game genre thread pops up and people are like "WHY AREN'T WE MORE POPULAR" people post examples like the above and they go "WELL THAT'S NOT ALL OF US!" Well, no shit: But you don't tell those people to sit the fuck down and shut up and never speak up again. And that just lets the problem fester.

I mean if you look at Starcraft/Quake 3/any other stream you don't see the commentators pull off some of the shit that the fighting game commentators or "notables" get away with. Shit, that Street Fighter x Tekken sexism event where (forgetting his name) talked down the girl who later removed herself from the event got a bunch of "what's the big deal!?" from SRK kids. Which just shows the issue.

It's the only JRPG from that era that is still tolerable. To be fair I haven't played Valkyrie Profile (dowloaded it) yet but all those JRPG's are awful when you aren't a teenager.

I wouldn't call it like that.  The guy is arguing about the "FGC" and cites a bunch of online comments, one video from the worst group of idiots in the scene (CORN, the dudes who made that video), and youtube troll comments on that video.  That wasn't even good cherry picking, it was some guy who spent two minutes researching and wrote an article on how everyone needs to stop playing fighting games    If he really wanted to get down and dirty, he could've copied chat logs from twitchtv streams, SRK comments, found videos of top players arguing and talking shit, etc.  This article could have looked somewhat legit.  Even then, that's just online bullshit.

The writer has never been to an event in real life, his opinion is invalid, end of story.  He'd still find plenty to criticize, but he wouldn't have written such an insanely imbalanced article.  Put another way-- he got intimidated by a youtube video and comments.  This guy is a complete man-baby by any metric and not very intelligent at all.

He did get people clarifying things, which is why he back-tracked so much.  The anonymous dickwads will come out for any article critical of anything video game related ever, we know this.  Plus, he said he did research for that article, when he clearly did not...it's a knee jerk reaction that focuses on the negative.

The problem is, we say "FGC," as if it means something, but there's no official regulating body that can control what people do and say online.  "FGC" is largely a constructed idea.  The people who are really into it consider it an IRL social activity-- they get together to play and talk theory and improve.  "FGC" is this thing people use to generically refer to that.  But it's also used online to attach all the bad stories that come out of it to an entire group of people...which is really stupid if you think about it because no one is actually in control.  It's not "the FGC is misogynist," it's that Aris (the guy from the SFxTekken web show) was being misogynist.  Or a couple of individuals who are being misogynist or sexist or homophobic, etc.  It's also not "the FGC likes making fun of guys till they cry," it's that the people who made that video like to.  And then you have your assorted online riff-raff who agree with shitty behavior because they're anonymous trash.  You can have the organizers of EVO speak out about the bad elements and the online shit heads will troll the fuck out of them, while most level headed IRL players will agree or ignore it.   

To be fair then, the good stuff can only be attributed to individuals too.  So when we ascribe the good and bad stuff to the individuals who do them, it looks less like an official organization that has a PR face to put forward and policies on new member recruitment and all this stuff.  It's just a bunch of people who play games...some of whom are assholes, some of whom are cool.  It's a niche and loosely tied together with tournaments, so it's easy to throw all these people in one spot, but it's not really that fair. 

Please see it that way instead of buying into this Fox News level of reporting shit.

Seriously, got my issue in the mail today, read through it, and have no shame in admitting that I'm sitting here crying my eyes out.

As I had mentioned up-thread, been subscribing since issue 32, and later went back and got all of the previous issues, as well as all of the issues of the Fun Club News other than the first one (which has gone for over $100 the couple of times I've seen it show up. One of these days I'll get it though), but, since Nintendo stopped publishing the magazine in 2007 (coupled with the closing of their message boards), I've just felt disconnected from the magazine. I mean, I've kept my subscription going the entire time - part because I wanted to, and part just because I knew I would feel bad if/when it ended and I wasn't subscribing. And, honestly, a number of the recent issues are just sitting around still in their original wrapping. So, it's not that I can even say it hasn't been as good - since I just haven't even read them like I used to - it's just that, as I said, I've kind of felt disconnected from it since Nintendo had stopped publishing it, and kind of felt like this day was just a matter of time and a foregone conclusion.

Still, knowing the issues would keep coming every month was still a reassuring thing. I had been getting them every month for nearly 21 years, and for much of that time it was such a momentous happening. Kind of went over all of that in my earlier posts, so not going to wax poetic yet again. But, even though it wasn't the same as it used to be for me, it was still something that made me happy to know I would keep getting. And, given all that, kind of kicking myself I hadn't submitted anything to it (but then, that was always kind of a recurring theme for me. I never really got around to sending in for any of the contest things, and, the only thing I ever got in the magazine for was beating Ocarina of Time with 3 hearts and 0 deaths (and before the whole extra bottle trick was really known either), while there were many other times I could have if I had just gotten around to sending stuff in. Ah well.

But, all that said, there were a number of heart-wrenching moments in that final issue. I kind of feel like, frankly, they could have skipped doing the reviews and any of that other stuff, and just focused on a recap of the history of the magazine. But then, of course, it wouldn't really be Nintendo Power without information about games to read about as well.

I know I've kind of made things seem bad about the past 5 years, but, I know we have people around here who have been involved in that time, and I am thankful for that as well. Since, without them, this time would have came even more suddenly 5 years ago. And, surviving another 5 years in the current environment isn't that bad of a thing. So, at least it kept those issues coming until now, and allowed for some proper closure to the magazine.

And, aside from that ever-elusive Fun Club News Issue 1, as far as the rest, including all of the issues of Nintendo Power, I guess Max's words fit pretty well. And, I really do go back and read all of my older issues as well. I'm still playing many of those games, and discovering even more of them, after all, and, even with all of the resources out there now, those issues of Nintendo Power are still some of the best places to go as far as information about those games. And I am very thankful to have them, and to have gone through everything over the past 20+ years.

Alright, the fgc is misogynist then.  I will forward the complaints to the High Chancellor of UMVC3 and see if we can get an anti-misogynist provision put into the FGC charter.  Don't count on anything though-- the KOFXIII consortium will definitely filibuster anything the UMVC3HC proposes.  If we can convince the 51% of the Street Fighter electorate to vote for it, it might be passed in a fort night.  Sometimes these things move slowly in the global FGC organization.
