What I find weird is NOE thinks this game could be given a chance in Europe but NOA apparently doesn't feel the same about their own region. Do RPGs generally sell better in Europe where this is can be substantiated? One would think the game would sell similarly (if not better) in America and seeing as how its already been given an English translation for Europe, not a lot of effort would be needed. I'm not familiar with importation though so I am sort of speaking from a place ignorance.

It all comes off as NOA being indifferent to any games that aren't the first party heavy hitters.

I don't get it either, JD.  They could hire a guy to sit at a computer, burn discs by request and mail them to costumers in paper sleeves and it seems like it should still be profitable.

Edit:  Reggie used to work for VH1.  Is he in any way responsible for the time when cable television was inundated with cheap shows following the "I Love the 80s" template?

Maybe nintendo is not unified and noa would have to pay noe to take advantage of their translation work

This is unfortunately where another distinguished mentally-challenged NoA policy comes into play: they won't use localizations done by the Euro branch.  If they did release the games stateside, they would want to make an entirely new localization.  No, I don't know why.

As for the Euro vs NA market thing, origin7al JRPGs seem to sell a bit better there, whereas in NA it's pretty much FF, KH, or nothing.  One of the main reasons we got all the DQ games we did was because of Euro sales.  The exchange rate is also a bit more favourable in Euro compared to NA, but you'd have to be really nitpicky about financial stuff to be concerned about... oh right, Nintendo.

The thing is, though, Nintendo aren't the only ones behaving this way.  Square Enix, SEGA, Namco, Capcom, heck even Atlus have cut waaaaaaaay back on localizations.  Ignition has essentially bailed out of localizing RPGs, XSEED is still game but has more than they can handle on their plate already with their Falcom commitment, and Aksys can only do so much.  This is why I say: study Japanese in your spare time.  You guys got lucky this time with a Euro release, but the future isn't going to be kind in this regard.  Not kind at all.

Fucking awful to see my favorite genre just wither and die off like this. At least I won't have enough time to even worry about gaming, once I buy a house...

Guess all gamers have to look forward to in the future are watered down action game RPG wannabes from the west, more dudebro shooters, or waggle casual games. Xenoblade was easily the most interesting-looking game too, I am planning on hacking my Wii but this shouldn't have to happen.

Do you have any resources you would like to recommend?

I'm tempted to study Japanese, but I'm already studying Mandarin in my spare time and it might be counter productive to take on a second language.

I think the bigger negative, for Nintendo, is this'll introduce 5K+ Nintendo fans to soft modding which is totally a gateway for piracy. Maguses in the making!

And playing a game with a print out of a translation sounds so abhorrent. I already get turned off when there's missable shit and I need to use a guide, let alone constantly trying to follow dialog. I wish subs were more prevalent, I don't need no stinkin' 3rd rate voicework.

just that the argument particulary touches me because piracy in europe means "free stuff + more stuff you would never see otherwise"

If Nintendo was smart, and we know they're not, what they'd do is set up a goal and a deadline. X number of units by Y date, preordered through Amazon. Say, 10K units by October. If the support is there, it'll meet or exceed the goal and Nintendo does a special printing in that amount. They get to come across as the good guy and fans get the game they want. And there's no costs outside of disc pressing for NOA because NOE has already done the translation work. If the support isn't there, Nintendo gets to say "Well, guys, we tried" and they aren't any cash or goodwill.

I dunno bout 5k. If the demand for these games is really there, this could be a big legit import/pirate situation.

to play imports on the wii you need to install that homebrew app.  getting all that software on the Wii takes roughly the same effort (very little) as installing software to pirate games (via usb hard drive).  at that point, there is maybe a small group of people that will spend the money to import game and play them legally.  because at that point, you've already "hacked" the console to play a legally purchased game to get around the archaic region locking.

I think what I'm saying is that people are more likely to pirate than import the translated games from Europe.  I don't actually know much about the Xenoblade thing, but Last Story looks cool and I'd import that if it was translated in English.  But not everyone will spend higher than average prices to import, especially when so many complain about $60 game prices and bargain bins and whatnot, when the alternative of piracy could be considered in the same 'grey' area of modifying the hardware.

There's actually 5K comments on their Facebook update alone. Its definitely not 5K unique users and its probably not all negative but there's definitely quite a following and fervor over this.

To be honest I wasn't worried about it before now; I've been blithely assuming that sooner or later they'd come out here, was just irritated about no specific date.

This is what I was assuming, too...  :-\

Nintendo's been a total disgrace this gen, I had high hopes for the Wii, but nope the system turned out to be a total disappointment. Only "hardcore" game that was any good was S&P2.

Wouldn't really consider Galaxy "hardcore" in the way something like S&P2, Xenoblade, etc are... that said, I liked the first Galaxy, thought the second one was a rehash... NSMB Wii was my favorite, since 2D Mario >>>>>>> 3D Mario IMO.

Also, some of you all are guilty of severely overestimating what kind of influence the 'hardcore gamer'  has in this market. There will be no major reprucussions from not releasing weeaboo games.

edit:

I'm 95 percent sure dqx will be localised, Oscar.  DQ9 did 'good' if not 'great'.  Square Enix certainly would like to ride the Nintendo marketing machine again, and DQ is one of the few  niche franchises Nintendo will stick with to try and sustain that rekationship.

Unlike you, EmCee, and the majority of other Nintendo fans... I don't really give a fuck about how well the company's stock does. I'm not a shareholder, I'm a gamer. And all I want is games, in the genres I like, to come out in the territory where I live.

There are a number of companies who make a living off of games that are MUCH more niche than stuff like Xenoblade or The Last Story, too, besides. X-SEED localized a game from a series with a bad reputation in the states (due to shitty Bandai-developed ports of games from the 90's), with thousands-upon-thousands of pages of text to translate, on a platform that's in the coffin in America. And managed to make a bit of money off it.

I'm actually predicting the Wii-U is gonna see a major decline in sales from the Wii, due to the casual market leaving in droves for their cellphone games and iPad shit. And due to the typical american dudebro "hardcore" preferring to stick with 360/PS3, or getting the 720/PS4 for much better graphics/online.

Yeah we get it tiesto, you hold it against a corporation when they don't cater to your whim.  I guess I have a longer term memory and remember when Nintendo published Elite Beat Agents, Dragon Quest 9, and Sin and Punishment 2 and various other ds games I've forgotten.  They're such vindicative assholes.

I do wonder if DQX will be the first to break some long standing rules of platform exclusivity the series adheres too.  Like, I'm sure its a moneyhat, so no non nintendo consoles will see it.  But the wii is dead in japan and I imagine (Hori?) realises this.  It will be even deader by the time DQX is finished.  The only things that make sense to me are a 3ds conversion or possibly WiiU, although coming out so early in the lifecycle would hurt its potential sales.

I have a longer term memory than that -I remember when Nintendo failed to publish Dragon Quest 6 SNES (after promising it in the US after the closure of Enix's US offices), every Fire Emblem game up until the GBA, every Famicom Wars game up until the GBA, Marvelous (the first Eiji Aonuma game), and of course some obscure little title called Mother 3... (arguably the best game on GBA). As a person who buys a ton of video games, I don't like being shitted on... the whole "deal with it" is pretty lame too. I'm not saying I'll outright boycott Nintendo's products (though nothing they have on the pipeline interests me at all), but it's still pretty shitty. What other businesses do you know of that dump on their clientele as much as the big 3 console manufacturers?

Gee I seem to remember we eventually DID get various advance wars, fire emblem, and dragon quest games... published by NoA.  Again, no one is actively denying you games just to piss you off.  A publicly owned company does not have the luxury of telling its shareholders they threw away money to appease you.  Capitalism is the balls, I know, but it is what it is.

I never said you have to support a company that doesn't serve your interests.  That's not the case though.  Operation Rainfall (lol wtf) is a huge shining example of the erroneous attitude at work.

'They SHOULD bring this game over cus' I want it and therefore it will somehow someway be successful by some metric'

NO.  Its delusion and self-serving non-logic.  I hope to remedy that by arguing on the internet.

edit:
As to why I stick with Nintendo then.  Honestly, its a combination of being cheap/poor and enjoying games that are chiefly about the mechanics and not having a plot.

Uhh, you've been addressed in other posts.  Don't think you can pick and choose with me honey.

Wii Music fits in more with their ~entertainment softwares~ (animal crossing, gameboy camera) than 'games proper', buts its not what you describe.  Essentially its a musical improv simulator, its actually a big commitment to get good results!

Valve caters to my every whim.  More companies should be like Valve.

Team Fortress 2 isn't fun though :(

It's not?

TF2 is the most whimsical FPS in the world.  I would have imagined you loving it.

I put in many hours, couldn't find it.  I kinda like being medic because my contribution is noticeable and appreciated.

I was surprised to see Atlus as the publisher of KoF XIII.

We don't always talk about gaf in this thread. We go from topic to topic.

If you have some GAF material you'd like to share, give'r.

Give me a little bit of time... I'll think of something good. :)

Anyways continue, I don't want to be seen as inhibiting good discussion, I just thought it was strange it was taking place in this thread. Maybe GAF has burned it into me that threads cannot go off topic EVAR. Even if their purpose is to be off topic.

They were never big blockbusters outside of FF, Awesome-o, but there was a "golden" period where non-branded JRPGs could sell between 100k-200k pretty reliably.

This is still true today. Tales games sell between 150-200k. These games are niche and have their own audience who sticks with them.

I think the most successful non branded jrpg I can think is Xenosaga episode 1. That thing did VERY well from what I remember. What about DQ8 and 9?

That said, a lot of games during the golden age that were under the squaresoft umbrella did pretty well. Chrono Cross and Parasite Eve for instance.

A Square rpg does not instantly mean sales. Games like Xenogears were stinkers in terms of sales. Games like Musashiden needed demo discs to get sales boosts. Dragon Quest constantly does decent, but never great. Final Fantasy remakes tend to pretty poorly. In fact, S-E has released a whole slew of new ip's this generation only for a bulk of people to ignore them...and then complain about the lack of new S-E ips.

That doesn't mean they were selling in the millions. It's just that they were taking advantage of the bigger fanbase that FF7 created. Games like that are still made today, but mostly on the ds and psp.

I think it's less that the golden age of JRPGs ended because of outside influences and more likely that Japanese studios had difficulty adjusting to HD development. Outside of being more difficult, it also increased costs and forced games to sell more copies to break even, which probably made publishers cut back on the amount of JRPGs being made.
