I used to love anime when i was a teenager around 1993-1998. My local rental store had a shelf of anime stuff they would rotate and i would rent random vhs tapes. Mindfucking sci-fi stuff, giant robots crushing shit, interestint dialogs that didnt feel like a cartoon for kids; Ninjas, girls with guns, explosions; even more 'realistic' stuff like patlabor. Nobody knew what it was, so it felt underground. You had super violent porn stuff like Legend of the overfiend but people considered it to be niche weird freakshow stuff..

Then it all went to shit. I guess companies realise how much money there was to be made with the pedos.

Same thing happened with CAVE shmups. They made those manly shmups with jet fighters, giant spaceships, and so on.. Then they started including random animu girls as mascots.. Then they realised how fucking weird and pedo friendly some of the fanbase were, as the fanbase went insane about the mascotts.. and now all they released for a while were  shmups featuring pedolicious girls flying around. They even had a shmup dedicated to fat or chubby lolis. I went from buying all their ports to completely not caring about them. Last one I bought was that insects-based shmup, and the hentai-u factor was nearly fatal for me, I actually hid the game eventually.

I'm not sure how oldschool fans of animes like duckroll cannot pretend that the market shifted toward the pedo material. I stopped caring once the material was getting fruitier and fruitier, and a decade after that, i'm kinda disgusted by what coming out, and I dont want anything to do with it.

Modern anime has become less about really awesome stuff happening to cool people and more about bland, boring characters in nerdling wish-fulfillment scenarios [loser guy has a harem of girls fawning over him, slice-of-life with minimal conflict, easy to digest life lessons, ect.]. It's cheaper to produce and the fans who lap it up also run out and buy thousand of dollars worth of toys, pillows, stickers, whatever.

Cowboy Bebop don't pay the bills, but Prole's Panty Patrole does and more.

I don't have an issue with anime. Some of my favorite entertainment ever is in that format. I just think the hit or miss ratio for me personally for that genre is a lot lower than I would like.

Even people who have been hardcore fans for years find that the ratio is a lot lower than they'd like. The 90's were amazing. Lots of great shows, big budgets, and all that. The 00's were great, too, UP TO A POINT. I'd probably put the year somewhere around 2006 or 2007. The past few years have just been bland and bad. Lots of just truly awful slop being dumped on long-time fans. There's good shows, but they are few and far between since then.

It's a change in trends, a change I don't care for. Some people do like it and I suppose they're happy, but that's just how it is.

Saw the first Ghost in a Shell movie for the first time a couple of days ago. reminded me of the type of anime I would go rent at the library back in the day. All raw lookin' cartoons with awesome fighting and lots of philosophy 101 dialog. Great shit. But most of my favorite stuff out of anime is post 2000 stuff. Like Planetes, Samurai Champloo (which I prefer to bebop) and Michiko & Hatchin.

I'm sure there are tons of dudes curling their toes in anticipation waiting for the next season of my girlfriend is president, but I don't understand why there isn't more anime like 90s/early00s. Was it just the bubble of anime expanding past japan that let them do that stuff? the creative impulses to do that stuff should still exist, no? it isn't that far back - the same dudes are probably still making shows. how come they can't get one or two made at least? I like to think I keep up with releases schedules at least, even if I don't watch much these days. been a while since I saw anything interesting pop up, but I might be scanning those lists with less and less attention for every one I go through coming out empty handed.

I think the industry is just too stretched thin. Few shows have very big budgets, profit margins seem pretty thin even with money coming in from abroad, animators barely make enough money to live off of, and there's just too many new shows every season [20-30]. Doesn't help that the economy is no good. I think most of the studios are just trying to play things as safe as possible, and right now that means moe and the like. Might be some larger socio-economic factors at work, in regards to the fanbase that's spending all the money, but I don't know enough about Japan to make an attempt at getting into that.

Besides FMA B I'd say the last great anime was either Death Note or Gurren Lagann, which both ended in 2007. So yeah, not much for me lately. Then again I don't watch a ton of anime. I usually watch one thing for a season or two, then it ends and I wait a year before picking another one up.

Durarara came close to greatness but it never really pulled itself together to become "great." And even FMA B felt a bit by the numbers at times, especially towards the end when it became almost a generic shonen.

A lot of my favorites from the past few years are shows that wouldn't necessarily stand out, at least as much, during the 90's or early 00's. They're the weirder shows, the more off-beat stuff that's not straight action or giant robots or inspired by Blade Runner/Mad Max. Shows like Trapeze, Detroit Metal City, Madoka, Ano Hi Mita Hana, Soredemo Machi [even though it's basically just slice-of-life with really strong direction and some visual panache], Level E, Panty & Stocking, Tentai Senshi Sunred, Time of Eve, and the like.

The only "traditional" anime I can think of recently [i.e. the past four years] that I really liked was Darker than Black.

I think it's pretty funny how many of those guys pretend that there isn't a substantial demand for lolicon and just how much the anime and manga industry supports all of that stuff. They're not stupid, everyone knows. They just happen to have a mod who gets PMSy when someone dares point that out. I think the whole discussion hit a little too close to home for some of them. :)

Most comedies are shite because they have to play a dual role of being edgy while being perfectly safe (ie, no activist group is going to sue them or protest).  So you're essentially limited to overdone tired crap like Two and a Half Men or The Office, where hilarity is essentially awkward moments with the actors looking into the camera after said awkward moment.  Shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Archer are more like rare outliers, versus periods of high quality programming like HBO dramas last decade.

Well with Sheen gone, Two and a Half Men will be in the shitter. Not that I particularly like Seinfeld or Friends but they were considered must watch TV in the 90s.

Season 2 of The Office US > your favorite show

This past decade has been great for comedy tv:

Arrested Development
Community
Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Office (seasons 2 and 3)
Clone High
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Chappelle's Show
30 Rock
Parks and Recreation
Modern Family
Loiue
Futurama
Sealab 2021
Aqua Teen
Archer
Home Movies
Party Down
Venture Bros.
Everybody Hates Chris
Pushing Daisies
Eastbound & Down
The Boondocks

This is without mentioning the stuff from the UK. We are living in the golden age of tv. Comedy films however are currently mostly a wasteland.
