I wouldn't say it was exactly rushing.  I used to talk to both a lot and they had been together for over like 6 years at that point.  Both are really nice and good people so I hope everything works out.

I think I'd be fine if its just a system you got handed for free or on the cheap and a bunch of games. In this case its a parent going out of their way, with a bit of forethought, to cultivate or provide a certain nostalgic moment of the parent and put it on the kid. Why can't the kid have their own moment instead of going out of ones way in such a way?

No filthy poor stuff going on.  It's not like my aunt is a gamer and would be going nuts over pixels, either.  She just wanted to start them out on the older, simpler stuff.  They got an N64 maybe six months later.
