Himu, the worst are the people from Atascocita that act like that.  Good lord.  At least Humble actually has poor neighborhoods like Township, but Atascocita people have no excuse for that stupid behavior.

Most of the middle class black kids were from Timberwood/Atascocita area. It never made a lick of sense to me. I lost friends over this bullshit.

SES has to be a big factor, though, seeing how this behavior/perspective is more prevalanet at my lower SES schools than it is at the more affluent ones. These schools have about the same % of students from differing backgrounds.

It could also be that I'm in Washington state.

It is a cool identity to latch on to.

I knew of a black kid I went to school with whose parents were both doctors, made over a half million a year, but this kid acted like he was 50 Cent, living a hard thug life selling bricks of coke in Jamaica, Queens.  I think identity plays a role.

I also think socioeconomics does play a role.  An affluent family will probably have less thugs, Juggalos, etc. because they know that they are probably more likely to make a good living as an accountant than end up being a thug millionaire.  A middle, lower-middle, and lower class person probably doesn't think that way, believing that it is hopeless, so they're more likely to think of themselves as future thug millionaires because it is either that or accept relative poverty.  I think a lot of it is learned helplessness.

Black males who grew up middle class => act gangsta.

Arab males who grew up middle class => act bedouin.

Its strange, but the similarities between black communities and arab communities is bizarre. You could make a case for most races in that affect though.

Did so yesterday.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=449059

why are so many people bringing up poor neighborhoods? this afflicts more than poor blacks. almost every black boy I knew growing up in the suburbs turned into some guy who worships ghetto culture, and they had two parents and stable home lives.

Outside of about 6 years spent living in Detroit, most of my childhood was spent in the suburbs around middle class families, and a lot of upper middle class blacks. And while I definitely encountered plenty of snobbish "how much money does your father make?" black kids focused on their GPAs, most were caught up in imitating thug/ghetto culture and expectations. Mentally it's hard for a kid not to be influenced by that shit without conforming to some degree.

I remember being on an AAU basketball team and inadvertently mentioning I watched a lot of the History Channel, which resulted in them laughing at me for weeks. I pretty much stopped watching the History Channel after that. Whereas most of my internal responses to that type of pressure resulted in me just growing to disdain "ghetto" culture while embracing my own individual racial "oddities" (liking metal/rock, reading, playing board games, etc), for some reason that treatment angered me so much that I gave up on something I liked. To this day I can't think of another example of me being effected by peer pressure like that. That type of pressure is hard for a kid to deal with, especially when it's coming from all sides. Many black kids can't escape it, at school or at church or on the playground etc, regardless of how nice of a neighborhood they're in.

Most of my friends in high school were white, Asian or Arab. They liked the same shit I liked, and I didn't have to worry about constantly being belittled or criticized.

It started off pretty good. A lot of good points were made by people like Dreams-Visions, captmcblack, etc but now it's currently a shit throwing fest between people like SSJGoku and Londa.

That sort of peer pressure really sucks. I remember having a rock collection CD in my computer when I was younger. My older cousin would stop by from time to time to chill with me and one day while he was using my computer, he found that album and ridiculed me for having it. "You listen to this shit?" I quickly deleted it and got rid of any other tracks that wasn't hip-hop off of my computer. Now, many years after that, we both appreciate other genres.

Can I go on a Real Talk rant? Can I kick it, please son. I need to get this off my chest:

Fuck black people who are obsessed with what is and is not satanic/of the devil/Illuminati. I don't often deal in stereotypes, but when I do black people are at the TOP of the list when it comes to this shit. For example when I was in high school I used to drive my female friend to school, and while I'd usually let her control the radio sometimes I'd listen to my Black Sabbath or Soundgarden albums; not even loud, mind you. She'd constantly ask how I could be a Christian and listen to satanic music, and she even told her mom about it - and her mom asked me the same question.

Now mind you, 80% of the black people who make this argument listen to a the most ignorant hip hop and r&b, gangsta shit, hyper sexual songs, misogynistic bullshit imaginable yet apparently God had no problem with any of that shit. Yet I'm putting my eternal life at risk by listening to N.I.B.

I think irrelevant is a pretty big word though, compared to most other companies that make FPS beyond IW.

It is no longer the company in the fps-scape, but it hasn't been that since Quake or so.

Well they aren't a trendsetter anymore, which doesn't mean they aren't one of the players. A new game by ID will still get extra coverage thanks to them being ID, it's name is not the same anymore (SE, Nintendo) but there is still something there.

Yeah man, after slavery was abolished southern whites who owned them just like, lost all their wealth.

That said, while I'll be first to admit that slavery has an impact on today's black Americans, I do think that in many cases some really DO need to get over it. The victim complex is mighty, mighty powerful. I think both arguments have a point but they're both on one extreme that fail to see the real picture. Black folks who blame their circumstance ENTIRELY on the past without trying and try to make an effort to make excuses for themselves are about as bad as the people who say the past doesn't matter -- not even a little bit, like, it doesn't matter at all.

The past affects us, but don't act like blacks are only just a victim. It's a complex issue. Dreams Vision's post should have closed the thread due to its accuracy.

I also like how some of these people have built up in their heads this huge cognitive dissonance. Rap is not a contributor. It really isn't! Saying rap is a contributor is not the same thing as (foolishly) entirely placing all the blame on rap. Culture is often a reflection of what a society upholds. Rap is a direct result of these problems, but it also helps reinforce and enable these problems. It's a cycle.

Through rap you can find the greatest ills in the black American community, ranging from the homophobia, to straight up misogyny. But rap isn't going to help make things better if it expresses such messages as it serves as a means of validating such negative connotations with the culture to begin with.

C'est la vie.

Goes into a little bit of it in general. Not All.

Oscar pretty much nailed it with his post above. Carmack is a genius but back in the day there was a battle between design and tech at id and Carmack won the battle and romero lost it. At the time everybody celebrated because Carmack was the good guy and Romero was the bad guy. Say what you will about Romero (and there is a lot of legit ill to say) he was right in the sense that the id of old was hitting a dead end.

Id is the company they are because of Carmack and that's both a good thing and bad thing at this point. And like a lot of geniuses I'm sure Carmack must be an annoying asshole to work with/for. It often comes with the territory.

90's - Great
00's - AWESOME
