I was in high school when Pokemon came out so I didn't care about it. I've never even played it.

If you're into JRPGs you should at least try it, it's very solid. Refined to pure gold.

But if you're not into JRPGs it won't change your mind. Random encounters and turn based battles, ya know.

I love JRPGs, but Pokemon has never interested me. My only exposure to the property was the first movie when I took my nephew to see it.

Right. But I think two of your examples (CoD, Madden) don't change at all. Or if they do it's at a glacier pace to where I don't really notice. The under the hood changes to Pokemon are mostly felt by "older"/was there for generation one fans that mostly pay the Battle aspects of the game. The little kids aren't going to give a shit about IV/EV's and "OMG THIS ATTACK HAS STAB AND THIS ONE DOESN'T." They're just going to dress Pikachu up and have him dance in a musical. Which is completely fine because I feel Pokemon is a decent "all-age" game that you can play once and see what the fuss is about and then you can either ignore it or go with another region/generation and go at it again.

honestly I don't know much about Madden, but CoD is quite different between games.  If you spend time with MW2 and Black Ops online, you'll start to notice all the dissimilarities.  Black Ops is considerably slower and less crazy than MW2; the pace of play and everything is way toned down, and while I like it more, others preferred the hectic pace of MW2.

my point is just that everyone gets all pot vs kettle about this stuff.  I'm sure Madden fans would call Pokemon stagnate and unchanging too.  From the outside it's hard to tell the difference.

Truth is that series that get yearly installments that include current trends and know how to market themselves avoid the sequelitist accusation the best. The other option is waiting huge amounts of time between games and releasing a very similar sequel with minor advances and a glossy new coat of paint. This also applies re-porting like Nintendo is fond of now. They don't do the long-period thing anymore. That's Blizzard's domain now.

I think my first real RPG was...Super Mario RPG.  I remember thinking it was shitty even back then.  And its even shittier now!

Well, hold on, on my dad's NES the only games I'd play with Super Mario Bros. and Zelda II...so I suppose technically Zelda II is my first RPG, even though its very loosely associated with RPG characteristics.

The subject matter doesn't interest me. Same reason why I don't play Ar Tonelico and other GUST games. Not saying Pokemon is the same as AT, but that's it.

I also hate playing on portables, even though I own a PSP and DS.

During the 16bit era, I played platformers and fighting games exclusively. It wasn't until the PSX days that I played my first RPG... I think it was FFVII (surprise!). At the time I had no idea WRPGs even existed.

But if I had to pick the RPGs that defined that generation for me, it would be either Suikoden 2 or Alundra (technically a Zelda clone, but whatevs).

FF8 was the defining RPG of the PSX era.  A close second is Star Ocean 2.

But FF8... maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan.  So much awesome cannot be contained.

I've never been the biggest turn based jrpg guy.  Like, I never really enjoyed the combat of most until Grandia 2.  But overall Chrono Trigger is my favorite and people mostly seem down on it (relatively; "overrated" and whatnot).  The reason why I like it is pretty much because it lessens or eliminates what I dislike about jrpgs, like the grinding, random encounters, serious(ly stupid) stories, long length, etc.  Also, time travel.

I want to play Xenoblade because it seems like another anti-rpg rpg.  although xenoblade is supposed to be really long.  and because demi, bebpo, and a few others here seem to like it.  can't trust other sources.

edit: I just realized that final fantasy 8 is actually everything I dislike about jrpgs, only supercharged.
