Shaking a kid and calling him a taco I think is well over the line for determining do I walk away or do I do something.

ok, well, have fun with that.   and have fun getting ruffled feathers from words.  You win as a monkey, lose as a person who is secure and confident enough to walk away.

I was generally a mild bully in school, but there was one time I got my ass handed to me by a black girl that was a year older than me.

I was walking down the hall to my next class and this older girl knocked my books out of my hands. As I bent down to pick them up, she took her book bag and swung it on my head. It must have had some books in it as it made me see stars. All her friends were sitting there laughing. I just kind of picked up my shit and shuffled off.

It wasn't like I was afraid of confrontation or hadn't been in fights before. Just in that moment, I froze because I had no frame of reference on how to handle the situation. It's like every part of my brain was telling me to get the fuck out of this situation as soon as possible.

it's just weird that so many people talk about instinct and being alpha in these situations.  Um, we moved on from that thousands of years ago.  We have laws against that kind of thing because it does more harm to everyone around if people can just throw punches over some name-calling and shaking.  If survival and being alpha is adapting to your environment, your current environment punishes that kind of behavior and can completely fuck up your ability to get ahead/survive.  And it's not because some guy said "lets make everyone a pussy lol"  when he came up with the law.  It's because we have the ability to be rational, even when confronted with bullshit.

And from a parenting p.o.v., you would not be doing the right thing teaching your kid that violence is an answer to little situations like that.  The day the kid turns 18 (and even before that), he can get fucked over pretty hard if he sticks with that behavior.  He also might grow up to be average joe fuckface.

the people in the gaf thread have watched too many romantic revenge movies and seem to have lost track of the fact that they're just movies. it's kinda corny actually...

the dad did fine too, he even told his son "I'm proud of you for standing up for your friend, but I wish you didn't have to resort to violence"

that's the best sort of response he could give, I think.  My dad did the same thing when I got in trouble for punching a bully.  He grounded me but he was proud I stood up for myself.

He did well for standing up for himself/friend but he just chose the wrong way to do it (starting a physical confrontation).

Uh, we're not that far removed from our animalistic instinct.  I mean, we AREN'T removed.  We're still animals.

::)

Let's take the initial premise that we are still animals.  No argument there.

We've also managed to diminish external threats to such a degree that our initial flight or fight reactions aren't really useful the way they used to be.  We're no longer in the jungle, and we don't need to occupy ourselves with the question of what's the next thing I hafta slaughter and/or avoid to survive.

But if that's the posture you want to occupy your time within, you'll certainly have plenty of  company. There's literally no end to communities based upon indulgent hand-wringing and impotent grandstanding, so you must be in hogs heaven if that's what you really believe.

If you're involved in a fight at school, regardless of who started it, you get suspended.

I get that the Dad is worked up about his kid standing up to a bully. That's great, but there are still consequences. If we think that guns aren't the solution to gun violence, then why should physical violence be the solution to physical violence?

Oh I think the suspension is warranted, absolutely.  And I'm not saying physical altercations are the answer, but after a half-year or more's worth of verbal and physical intimidation, a message has to be conveyed.  Sometimes a pop to the face works.

I'd be curious to hear if this bully stops his bullying for a while, or just find smaller easier targets.

Schools need to accept the fact that not all kids are ready to learn academics. Some kids need to learn how to behave and socialize with others. I bring this up all the time, which drives some teachers insane. Too bad.

Also, I'm sick to death of hearing "they should know better" in meetings. Clearly some kids don't know better (although I agree that there are tons that do), and that's the reason why they've got an Emotional Behavioral Disability.

Social skills groups, role playing, learning how to make friends, helping to instill confidence. A lot of times once you start acting confident, you're no longer a target.

Most of the kids I work with are the bullies, though. That's a whole different ballgame.

A lot of bullies are just lonely ass kids who want attention or acknowledgement. I think a lot of bullying stems from that, and is expressed in who they choose to bully.

Pretty much. One of my high schools has a self-contained behavior program for kids with significant issues. They're great kids who just don't get it and need help learning what to do.

There are other kids who are truly disturbed and need intense mental health services we can't provide, though.

People don't seem to make the connection between there being so many sociopathic and selfish people in society and teaching their kids that they're the little exception to the rules.

violence is bad, but you, johnny, you're batman.  if that kid calls you a cigarillo again, just pop him right in the chin to shut him up.

He wasn't being physically harassed and clocked a kid because he was talking shit? Not really in the kid's corner on this one. I dealt with that from elementary through middle school because some asshole little girl hated me. I never resorted to physically attacking her though. You have to learn to let shit slide and let people talk shit without it riling you especially in school when people are just going to try to push your buttons. I witnessed this a lot towards the boys more than the girls. Some guys are just gonna straight up call you a taco to try to get you to fight them.

I guess he was shaking some other little kid and calling him a taco. Oh well, if you hit someone else the law is always gonna come down on you, schools are no diff. Gotta learn to work outside the system.

Then those are just assholes. One of my bullies her parents basically despised each other but they refused to divorce because it's shameful. So they basically slept in separate rooms and she got to see them fight daily.
