Sony "Torne" digital tuner for PS3
« on: January 28, 2011, 11:47:50 PM »
My old PSX just died, and Japan's moving to 100% digital broadcast this year, so the analog beastie would have become useless anyway.

Has anyone used this digital tuner solution for your PS3?
http://www.amazon.co.jp/ソニー・コンピュータエンタテインメント-torne-トルネ-CECH-ZD1J/dp/B0034KZXBO/

I'm interested in any info at all; if I can use my PS3 as an HDD recorder without much hassle, I'd rather not get another big box to attach to my TV.

I've heard it's good. Here it's called playTV and was released in conjunction with a digital freeview service, seems how good it is depends on how well configured it is for your countries signals.

Thanks for that. Hm. Japan is achingly behind the times on digital distribution; there's no Netflix-over-internet here, and they only just started doing DVD rentals by mail. Yeah.

However: The amazon rating on that page is pretty darned great. It looks like it also does some nifty stuff with my PSP as well.

I was hoping maybe some Japanbore peeps have tried it. But most everyone else decries the state of Japanese TV as utterly pathetic.

dcharlie says it runs on the same software as the PSX, i.e. dire, hair-pulling stuff. I would try it before you buy for sure. That said, the other options over here don't seem to be much better - I know the Toshiba DVR thing I have has a horrible, horrible GUI that basically only I can use 3 years later. Wife and child just keep pressing buttons until either it does what they want or they get bored and yell for me.

Actually, "same as PSX" seals the deal for me. My family is used to it, and I can turn my daughter loose on it and be confident that she won't have any problems.

SURE, I'd love to have a TiVO level device, and I hear Sony licensed that for their Cocoon line, but I have -no- idea if they're still using that license, and I prefer to limit the number of in-warranty Sony hardware in my house at any given time. ;-)

go for it then, and tell us what you think! Our Toshiba thing can't last much longer so would be nice to have some impressions on the Torne.

Mark MacDonald has it, says it's awful and at times infuriating in terms of scheduling and everything. BUT sp0rsk also has it and thinks it's pretty good. It's not too expensive so I'd just go for it and find out for yourself.

Purchased! Once it arrives via Amazon-sama, I'll post impressions.

If it's anything like Play! TV then it's pretty good.

Ha, I may reach "Level 3" at some point then... via my HDD recorder. :lol

It arrived. Set it up in a jiffy. I can't tell if it's more complex than the PSX controls or not, because those were pretty weird; I just got used to them.

No trophies, I think. It installs through the game menu, then activates a new "TV" channel on the XMB.

I can see marketing firms sponsoring those kind of achievements in future. What a disgusting thought.

I note there is no 'late-night softcore' option though :'(

That's because there's only Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze; there is no Pearl.

That joke was so bad I actually shook my head in real life. However, I did crack a smile in doing so -which I assume was the intended effect. :)

I've been using this for a bit. It's great. All the local gadget mags have been giving this top marks. Now they need to release a version which includes the BS tuner.

Isn't leaving a console on, 24/7, kinda bad?  I wouldn't trust any of my consoles enough to use it as a DVR, especially with the reliability issues of Sony and MS in this gen.

It turns itself on and off at the specified times. The PSX just recorded while in Standby mode.

I have friends who leave their PS3 on all time. I always see them idling in Netflix whenever I log on. After my 60GB PS3 PHAT died on me, that really freaks me out.

Yeah, I was actually pretty worried about this too, with the whole YLOD situation. I dislike returning items, even if they're entirely taken care of by warranty.

After I set a test scenario, it turned itself on, and then when it was done recording, it was still on. I think instead of Torne's settings, it may have turned off due to my System Settings regarding inactivity.
