I'm bored. So I'm gonna try a free mmo
« on: February 15, 2011, 02:24:08 PM »
As the title suggests since there is a lull for me until Dragon Age 2 so I kinda feel like wasting time in a free mmo until Dragon Age 2 comes out for some bizzare reason. So which one should I try? Generally I hate the genre but whatever, I'm bored. Leaning towards champion online since that recently became free to play. The only real requirement I have is that it be very solo friendly.

Does it have to be an mmo? I have a feeling you'd like Titan Quest

I love Titan Quest. And that Torchlight MMO when it finally comes out will probably be the first mmo I actually like. But I'm just looking to kill a little time. I don't want anything particularily deep or involved. Just something to grind in. Level up. Get more powerful. And nothing I will especially miss when I stop playing. A free mmo seems like the best way to achieve that.

Having tried a number of free MMOs recently, about the best you're going to get is Vindictus or Lord of the Rings Online. Maybe Need for Speed World if you want some free online racing.

NFS World is fun. It's basically a MMO version of NFS Underground.

I tried both of them for about an hour each this evening.

Champions online is sort of what I don't like about mmo's. You hop in and feel a bit lost at first and then you do all these boring missions for the looming carrot of leveling up although I have no idea what all the numbers mean or what the improved gear is supposed to do for me. It's not like Diablo or something where its a very tangible and immediately obvious benefit for each new thing you get. That being said it is impressive how much content there is there for free. The player creation bit is neat. I'll play a bit more.

Vindictus is actually pretty cool. I like that one. It's an action game which I prefer and its immediately a lot more fun right off the bat. It's funny if Champions online played liked Vindictus it might actually be cool. But it doesn't. It has that typical mmo combat. I just plugged in my 360 controller in Vindictus and its plays great. Much more accessible. Feels like something you would play on a console.

Vindictus also makes it really easy to hop in a party that's about to leave, do some multiplayer monster bashing, and then hop right back out. You don't have to make any kind of real commitments or anything.

Vindictus

This is the correct answer. I'd play it, but booting it out of a browser kinda bums me out.

Champions Online went to the free-to-play route in late January and so far the switch for the super hero MMO from developer Cryptic Studios has proven, at least so far, to be a big success. According to a press release from publisher Atari, the game has seen increases in "online concurrent user, unique login and revenue totals by over 1,000 percent" since the switch. (Specific numbers were not revealed).

This is just the latest example of an MMO game that has seen better success after switching from a subscription only business model to a free-to-play model. Turbine's Dungeons and Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online have both reported much more interest in the game since going the free-to-play route.
