psn will be back up this week for online play and stuffs

passwords were hashed but not encrypted
cc data was encrypted and no evidence it was taken but who knows
other data was definitely taken

there was a known vulnerability in the software they were using; known to everyone but sony's engineers apparently

Yeah they were using old versions of Red Hat Linux and Apache on their servers, hadn't been upgraded for quite a while from what I hear. Old = flaws become known. Who woulda thought you should upgrade occasionally?
Linux.

Press Release: Some PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services to be Available This Week

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media
SOME PLAYSTATION®NETWORK AND QRIOCITY™ SERVICES TO BE AVAILABLE THIS WEEK

Phased Global Rollout of Services to Begin Regionally;
System Security Enhanced to Provide Greater Protection of Personal Information

Tokyo, May 1, 2011 – Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) announced they will shortly begin a phased restoration by region of PlayStation®Network and Qriocity™ services, beginning with gaming, music and video services to be turned on. The company also announced both a series of immediate steps to enhance security across the network and a new customer appreciation program to thank its customers for their patience and loyalty.

Following a criminal cyber-attack on the company’s data-center located in San Diego, California, U.S.A., SNEI quickly turned off the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, engaged multiple expert information security firms over the course of several days and conducted an extensive audit of the system. Since then, the company has implemented a variety of new security measures to provide greater protection of personal information. SNEI and its third-party experts have conducted extensive tests to verify the security strength of the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. With these measures in place, SCE and SNEI plan to start a phased rollout by region of the services shortly. The initial phase of the rollout will include, but is not limited to, the following:

•Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
-This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
•Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
•Access to account management and password reset
•Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
•PlayStation®Home
•Friends List
•Chat Functionality
Working closely with several outside security firms, the company has implemented significant security measures to further detect unauthorized activity and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information. The company is also creating the position of Chief Information Security Officer, directly reporting to Shinji Hasejima, Chief Information Officer of Sony Corporation, to add a new position of expertise in and accountability for customer data protection and supplement existing information security personnel. The new security measures implemented include, but are not limited to, the following:

•Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
•Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
•Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
•Implementation of additional firewalls
The company also expedited an already planned move of the system to a new data center in a different location that has been under construction and development for several months. In addition, PS3 will have a forced system software update that will require all registered PlayStation Network users to change their account passwords before being able to sign into the service. As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data.

The company is conducting a thorough and on-going investigation and working with law enforcement to track down and prosecute those responsible for the illegal intrusion.

“This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry. These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber-security. We take the security of our consumers’ information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data. In addition, the organization has worked around the clock to bring these services back online, and are doing so only after we had verified increased levels of security across our networks,” said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, Sony Corporation. “Our global audience of PlayStation Network and Qriocity consumers was disrupted. We have learned lessons along the way about the valued relationship with our consumers, and to that end, we will be launching a customer appreciation program for registered consumers as a way of expressing our gratitude for their loyalty during this network downtime, as we work even harder to restore and regain their trust in us and our services.”

Complimentary Offering and “Welcome Back” Appreciation Program
While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, the company is committed to helping its customers protect their personal data and will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in each region.

The company will also rollout the PlayStation Network and Qriocity “Welcome Back” program, to be offered worldwide, which will be tailored to specific markets to provide our consumers with a selection of service options and premium content as an expression of the company’s appreciation for their patience, support and continued loyalty.

Central components of the “Welcome Back” program will include:

•Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
•All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
•Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.
Additional “Welcome Back” entertainment and service offerings will be rolled out over the coming weeks as the company returns the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services to the quality standard users have grown to enjoy and strive to exceed those exceptions.

SNEI will continue to reinforce and verify security for transactions before resuming the PlayStation®Store and other Qriocity operations, scheduled for this month.

So after all of this, there's still no promise towards rebuilding or implementing features that the competition has after this entire security breach.

What is the benefit of using psn over other services? They have completely dropped the ball and lost my trust in regards to this. I was waiting for a response in regards to how they're going to take the service further, but their response is basically this:

"Have a 'free' month of PS+ (which really isn't free) and hopefully our security won't be as crap as it was in the past. Maybe we'll get better tech people and actually update our software."

Having ps+ for a month means jack squat. It is an advertisement more so than a legitimate offer towards the millions of customers' whose personal data has been put up on the internet due to Sony's negligence. Welp Sony, you've lost a supporter.

it's worse if you paid for ps+ (like me)

you get the free month (like everyone else), but since it's been down for two weeks you're really only getting two free weeks - AND the store will still be down, so you basically get jack shit in the way of recompense unless they start the ps+ stuff after that goes back up

they should have given ps+ the free month plus the two weeks they missed

:lol @ people defending this

I'm pretty sure PS+ subscriptions have to be manually downloaded like any other piece of content from the store, and from what I gathered the free month subscription will be up with the store. That is unless they're stupid enough to  skip that step and go through the trouble of automatically upgrading every account (77 million of them, active and inactive alike) to Plus. Then again, this is Sony we're talking about so anything is possible.

Assuming they have dates for their PS+ sub, you could just DL it on the last few days and get a free month for the next month instead.

Also could they just put Wizardry up for free, cause thats all I want to buy anyway.

"Hey guys, some asshole hackers took down everything due to outsmarting our system. We are super sorry, and are overworking everyone here at HQ to try and figure out if your stuff is still safe, AND are trying to rework the system at the same time!"

"FUCKING SONY, JESUS, TAKING PSN DOWN, WHY DID THEY DO THAT."

"Hey guys, super sorry again, we've found they didn't get a hold of any important info, and have finished rebuilding the service, as a gesture of good will, here's free stuff!"

"FUCKING SONY, I DON'T WANT YOUR FREE STUFF, THIS ISN'T ENOUGH. YOU TOOK DOWN MY PSN FOR TWO WEEKS FOR NO REASON. YEAH YOU GOT HACKED AND HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE SITUATION, BUT YOU COULD HAVE DONE THIS BETTER!"

I find it extremely amusing people are getting angry at Sony, the people who have been forcing their employees to work super long hours to fix this mess, and who are giving away money like crack as an apology, rather then directing their anger at the people who actually did the deed.

I'd be feeling a lot more charitable towards Sony right now if Kaz Hirai hadn't outright admitted they were knowingly running server software with major security issues.  But knowing that?  I basically trusted them with the keys to my house and they left them on the table at the bar while they went and got a beer.

I wouldn't rely on this, see PS2 emulation on PS3. Not only was it removed, but it's simply not as good,  PS2 is FAR better at rendering PS2 games than PS3. Even Xbox to X360 emulation isn't perfect, though the hardware used was more standard. Isn't it also the case that DS games aren't as crisp or something when played on 3DS?

Oh that's cool. I was wondering about the whole 3DS -> DS emulation thing. Never owned a DS so a big part of having a 3DS would be getting to play DS games as well. I've played a couple DS games on my PC, but it's really lame not playing on a handheld.

I'm not too big on trusting any of these big companies with important shit, though obviously I have levels of trust.

Probably, I'd trust Steam the most, then MS, then Nintendo (cuz they don't really keep that much info at all, yay double-edged swords), then Sony (known to collect massive amounts of info on their customers, clearly don't keep up to date on security, and enjoy antagonizing hackers).

But realistically?  Nobody's getting my CC from here on out.  Because someone with enough talent and time could bust any of 'em, and after the profits this thing will generate for the hacker(s) that did it, these kinds of customer databases are going to look like fat delicious sheep for profiteering hackers.
So are you're going to stick with pre-paid cards, Oscar?

I haven't bought anything on PSN for a long while but when I decided to switch to cards, I was surprised to see that you can't use paypal to add funds to the wallet.  Don't know if the 360 is the same way.  Or Wii? last time I bought points on the wii, it asked for the county I was living in wtf.

XBL points are kinda awesome because you can buy point cards cheaper than the actual worth.

i charged the damn thing all night a few days ago and i got about 4 hours out of it. When the light went red i let out an audible "oh f*ck off!"

back on the white DS lite.

Don't get it as a replacement DS - the software situation is also garbage - there's more meat on an anorexics coq , so i would wait until 3DS-lite.

I found that it helped to turn down the screen brightness (from 5 to 3) and to turn off the wi-fi when I wasn't using it.

But yeah, I wouldn't buy a 3DS right now, unless you're like me and had to have SSF4 on the go.

there is a good bit coming for the 3DS this year, actually. not entirely original content or from third parties, but Zelda 64 and StarFox 64 remakes, Kid Icarus, Mario Kart and supposedly the new Mario game.  from third parties there is Resident Evil "we'll sell you this bonus mode for full price" and Mega Man "buy this demo"

there's games to play but the "new" stuff isn't that great (outside of Ghost Recon) and the outlook to the end of the year looks pretty sparse :/

All in all, seems they just wanted the 3DS out the door ASAP :(

Eh, I'm happy with SSF4, RR3D, SW Chronicles, and haven't even gotten around to Ghost Recon yet.  DOA is this month and there's RE The Mercenaries, what...in June?  Plus The OoT port.  But this really isn't the thread for this talk.

Are you guys serious? :lol

If so then I must be living in the real Sonyland. Almost everyone seems unhinged, and I'm the only one getting worked up over this.

Yep, I even called Best Buy here and they said people were trading PS3s in like mad.

I've got a few friends with PS3s, they just requested new credit cards.

Well most of them have been ps3 owners since launch. So they've been through:

loss of bc
loss of linux (one of them used it)
and more

and then when this happened and they freaked out because their debit card info was on their ps3s they decided enough was enough, sold their systems, bought 360's and left me with marvel vs capcom 3 and ssf4 with no one to play with (we only played local and now they have no ps3 controllers, not to mention no online).

dagger to heart.

in fact, the only irl friend i know who has a ps3 AND a 360 is mupepe and he supposedly hasn't gotten rid of his ps3. but i'm talking about ps3 only owners -- most of which are black -- who decided to trade in for a 360. Not multiconsole owners.
