Gonna replay FF12
« on: May 20, 2011, 06:21:48 PM »
I never finished the game I believe I was like 45% done or whatever maybe I'm making this shit up. I was at the 'native american' village last time I played it. I just want to restart the whole damn thing since it's been a while anyway.

Now what I want from you guys is general and spoiler-free tips to what I should or shouldn't do and what to keep in mind. Please let these be very basic things, I still do enjoy figuring out everything in games as much as I can myself but that's why I only want basic advice.

Uh, if you want to get the Zodiac spear (best weapon) easily there's a few chests you shouldn't open along the way. I never got that weapon, apart from that retardedness, game is amazing :bow2

I lost my save before being able to finish it, and was thinking of playing the fan-translated International edition, but I'm not sure how compatible the game is with PCSX2 or how reliable translation is. Any thoughts?

Edit:

game is fucking awesome

if my comp wasn't such a pos i'd totally play through the international version right now

Because it major changes included, including a full job system, license board changes, rebalanced gameplay, fast forward button, higher rare drop rate, no stupid "don't open specific chests" rule to gaining zodiac spear, more quests, can control guest characters, more powerful spells are only gained by exploring and defeating higher level enemies, you can't just buy them and more.

basically, the definitive final fantasy.

Khan: they use the translation from the english ps2 version, but the new translation is mostly for menus.

You can play it (FF12International) on your ps2 if you have a swap magic or something.

leper Powerslave, he ain't playing shit

nah son I've been playing it these last days. I had problems with my crap laptop so I couldn't post.

So yeah I've reached the Tomb of Raithwall and I just finished the first 8 hunts. A few impressions and questions so far, bear in mind this is my second playthrough so I knew most things already:

- alright I remember that I rather liked how much NPCs there were to talk to. I remember that the game could be really funny with the little sidequests and the way the dialog was handled during these moments (with just text bubbles most of the time). Characters would say funny and interesting things. So those are still intact and I still had fun with talking to NPCs but now with how much I'm advancing and opening up towns the NPCs just become too much. The tavern at Bhujerba has 14 people you can talk to. That little room alone! The rest of the city has way too many to talk to too. Combining with how numbing and confusing the story can be, these NPCs love to talk about the state of the nation and recent events. And to read most of that is useless anyway since they're mostly random opinions of people of the city. Now I understand that if you're really into the mood of totally immersing yourself in that world you could go ahead and read that but ffs couldn't they have made it a little more entertaining? I basically feel like strolling through the game without talking with people in huge cities anymore. This shouldn't be the case. I still try to talk to all people though, but I'm losing the motivation in doing it.

- I need to address the textfont and the bubble beneath the screen. I don't know why but it's not enjoyable to read dialog with that textbox. It's a good font but not for reading lots of text imo. And besides that, it's all in caps.
Looks very boring.

- The city structures have terrible design. It all feels too much like a labyrinth. Random paths that are hard to navigate through. Damn the maps in some 'dungeon' areas are huge. The Sandsea for examples. You have more than 8 sections in that part and this shit just keeps going on. Most maps feel like random generated dungeons populated with enemies and lackluster treasure. But I'm still enjoying it. I love battling.

- I'm kinda lost with the gambits. I basically have all characters with some variation of Attack and Cure if allies get damaged. I get the idea behind the whole thing but I think I don't have to desired gambits I could use to fully flesh this whole system out. I still don't have a 'Ally: Poisoned' gambit and I'm this far in the game. There are a few more essential things like the one above missing in the beginning of the game (am I still at the beginning?)
I also could use advice on how to set up Cure/Potion gambits. How should I put these in order and with which gambit?

I'm using Vaan, Balthier and Basch for my party. Advice on gear? I got them all equipped with Iron Hammers; it deals out great damage (around 700) but a lot of the time it also deals damage in the 50 range. What's up with that?

- The superb voice acting and script is a huge reason why this game is good. It's all so classy and just pure quality.
And I love grinding oh yeah, it's fun to gain Licence Points and sell loot and shit. On the matter of leveling up, it doesn't seem to improve stats that much. Just a little HP boost and one point here and there.

That sounds really great. I would very much like that fast forward button, could come very handy strolling through those endless plains and deserts. Does this feature become available directly from the start in FF12i?

i stopped a bit after that, i think after leaving the village where that chick is from, the map opened up quite a bit and i had to make about 6 stops before making it to my destination so i decided to stop all together for no reason.

i loved the game though and i've been itching to replay it again.

update:

Man I whitewhined a lot in the previous post lol. I finally got the hang of the gambit system, everyone is set up with haste and protect and bravery. Is it something I'm doing wrong but does it seem like later in the game when you got a lot of gambits going on that your 2 other party members keep lagging behind while continuously casting haste and protect on themself? It feels like the whole thing is bloated and it shows during battles sometimes where characters seem to be frozen for a few seconds before they become active and participate again. And before you say it's my gambit setup, I can tell you it's neatly set up now. I got Attack down the list after all the important cure and raise gambits. Only haste is now above Attack, I used to put all 3 status boost gambits above it but battles become a drag that way.

I'm at Old Archades.
- character levels are 48 all 3 for my main party. I don't use the 3 chicks at all, will probably level all of them up with the double exp accessory equipped sometime later on
- license board nearly completed. I got all that I need. Except for the weapons and armours that I still haven't acquired.
- completed about 25 hunter marks

How does all that sound?

So, you're getting pauses with your secondary characters where they do nothing? There are heaps of reasons why this could be, is the last statement you've got after your buff, debuff, heal gambits attack nearest enemy? Even if you have an AoE character always attacking and your assist characters attacking his target as your final gambit if he stops attacking because of a status ailment (I think) your characters won't attack (which shouldn't matter because they should heal him anyway). Been a while since I played this game. Decided I'm going to do a replay soon too, but I've got a bunch of things to finish.

I know what you're talking about and this is not the case here. I don't have my 2 other members set up with targeting party leader's target, they have nearest or any.

Hmm, I dunno. I had similar problems with gambits at points in the game, but there was always some problem with the logic of the statements as to why it was being weird (can't remember the exact reasons but there were a few points where I had forehead slapping 'duh' moments). How many gambits have you got per person now?

As for your characters casting haste or protect on themselves continuously, they didn't have something like reflect rings on stopping them from casting it on themselves? This would be one case for an infinite loop (until a gambit above this one was triggered). Or, maybe they were being debuffed near instantaneously causing them to rebuff?

None of that dude, I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if it was a reflect issue. This seems tech related to me, or the game programming..

I got about 8 gambits per character. There are also some antidote and eye drop gambits there just in case.
