Played a bit of the campaign instead since the mp is down. Graphics are really nice. Probably the first really good looking Halo game for me this gen. 343 did a much better job on that front. The controls also feel a big tighter which I like. It's still halo but they feel snappier. The sound is also very good.

I'm fond of digital manuals if done right.  Going forward it seems like it'll be a standard thing (Vita and Wii U do it).  I'm sure Microsoft will extend it to smartglass to read manuals on your smartphone/tablet.  Lack of manuals only annoys me when there are advertisement slips instead.

It's playlist based and now you can join progresses in match.

http://www.examiner.com/article/halo-4-launch-playlist-gets-detailed-by-343-industries

Although the full playlist doesn't seem to be working right now because of the issues.

Played some mp. Seems fun. A lot faster paced than reach. I tried the fish stick layout but my brain still wants to play it like reach so I'm gonna have to switch the controls back I think.

Played the SP for about 2 hours. Got to the mission where I have to go to two different places to destroy two things (keeping it vague, spoilers, whatevs).

This is an odd game. You can see where 343 is trying to branch out, trying to do something different, trying to move this series forward.
Then literally in the next breath you're back to where you've been before. Doing the same things you're always doing.

I like the way the game looks (for the most part). I like what they're doing with the Cortana/Chief storyline. I think the new enemies offer a new welcome challenge.

Where this overall story is going, we'll see. It's playing too safe for me to really get fully invested so far.

Played some MP but I'm too tired from work today to really keep at it.  The game definitely looks beautiful and seems better than Reach was.  But it's more of the same.  You know exactly what to expect.

When I heard Jennifer Hale's voice during the little multiplayer intro sequence, all I could think of was "I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite game on the Citadel!"

I'm starting to think the mp is pretty great. I'm not good but it's really fun. It takes the smart stuff from cod and adds it in but it still feels like halo. A much faster version compared to Reach.

Overall I kinda think 343 just showed up bungie in most departments.

As far as the SP, I've never been that big on it for Halo past the first game like seemingly a lot of people are. I find their universe boring and confusing. And the action despite all the talk about a wonderful sandbox does kind of get repetitive. I don't hate it or anything. But its also nothing amazing.

Offtopic but what is the last SP campaign you liked or was amazed with in an FPS Stonet?

I haven't been amazed with an FPS campaign since like Deus Ex.

Like is a much lower barrier though and there are a decent number I thought were fun and liked in recent years. Modern Warfare 2, Bullet Storm, Gears 1 & 2, Borderlands although that's more because it was funny rather than being a classically good fps campaign, Crysis 1 & 2 were both good. Uncharted 2 which you might as well lump in there even though its 3rd person.

Honestly though the FPS campaign seems to be mostly on the decline anyway. I almost never buy them anymore for the campaign. (Bioshock Infinite is one of the rare ones where that will happen) And the best action games on the campaign front are hybrid style games. Deus Ex series, Dead Space series, and the Mass Effect series are really the sort of campaigns I'm looking for when it comes to shooters or action games and those are pretty rare.

Pretty good in everything but the story. As someone that hasn't read the more recent books, things that were relieved in this game that were wtf moments were barely touched on. And no idea where they are going to go with this for the sequel

yeah i'm not enjoying the SP much at all anymore. it started out ok with the prometheans and whatnot but now it's just the same ole' Halo except not as good. humans telling me what to do. covenant. etc etc. way to completely throw away all the interesting things going into this game.

I got past this part where I have to escort this giant Mammoth thing around a boring desert location and now I'm solo in this sniper section. It was pretty annoying due to those jackal snipers all over the place. I finally go a decent way through it when i got caught by a suicide grunt and died..... the game pushed me all the way back to the beginning of the section :\

the set pieces and momentum are just not where they need to be. I don't feel like I'm working towards anything and nothing I'm doing is distinct. They're scrapping the bottom of the barrel of Halo stuff to do.

really disappointed. i don't understand how anyone can think this is better than Reach. Or even Halo 3 for that matter. What exactly does Halo 4 do that that's much better? I'm not seeing it.

Now that I think about it... every other Halo game has disappointed me.

Halo CE - great
Halo 2 - awful
Halo 3 - great
ODST - didn't like it
Reach - great
Halo 4 - disappointing me.

I though the first was overrated because of poor level design but at least it was novel at the time. After that I never really cared. Halo always took itself way too seriously and it always felt like they were trying to have a star wars level mythos but to really feel that way I needed to read books outside the game.

To me this halo feels like every other halo in that regard. The moment to moment combat is fun enough because of the ai but I have no idea what's going on and I don't really care about what's going on.

The open world part of ODST is one of my favorite parts of the Halo series.  The Halo series perpetually going for action and power fantasy made playing as a lone soldier in an enemy infested city feel fresh for Halo.  That's party the direction I wanted Halo 4 to go.  Master Chief takes out two scarabs in five minutes in Halo 3.  Would've been cool for Halo 4 to have brand new enemies to make Chief vulnerable again.

It's one of those cases where you talk about how you want Halo to change so much that you realize maybe you should just play another game.  It's like Halo has fallen into the same place as Zelda.  But I still like Zelda and Halo games in spite of the stagnation.

That's exactly how I feel, its a disappointment in a lot of way. It's like they wanted to try, but felt they would risk losing their fanbase by pushing the series in a new direction.

Saying that they have done a great job with a few things. Bringing a bit more character driven drama to the series for once! Albeit it doesn't amount to anything sadly, but that's what future games are for. This was their first time in the rodeo and they did a pretty good job ad besting Bungie in a lot of ways. If not for story alone, but with their technical prowess.

The game looks beautiful at times, and other times it looks like muddy shit with generic flat textures. The forerunner architecture is so "clean" its kind of annoying to look at. Reminds me of Halo 2 way too much cause everything is so flat and symmetrical in nature. The set pieces look fantastic though, with stunning vistas and well pronounced backgrounds/foregrounds. It really gives me hope for what they will be able to accomplish with new hardware and more rendering power.

The open world thing was what made me not finish ODST. The actual missions were pretty OK when you got to them, but having to go through the game world became more annoying than fun. I just didn't think it was worth dealing with.

It was an interesting concept and I bet if done right it could be pretty great but I didn't feel it was done that well in ODST.
