I'd say that this is about on par with all the other shows today though Ubisoft killed it with games. The $249 price means nothing to me as I don't want a wifi only version and I'll never get the 3G version as long as it only works on fucking AT&T. Especially until AT&T makes the reception improvements for DC they've been promising.

 ::)

Why do you want 3G?  You can't use it for online gaming.  You can't use it for big downloads.  3G is pointless for the gaming device.  Unless you really care about using your PSV as your web browser/mp3 player on the go, I don't see why you wouldn't get the $50 cheaper version that does everything you need for gaming.

Before everyone gets their panties in a bunch over 3G or not, we should be asking about the battery life of this thing.  If it's what I'm expecting it to be (shit), then 3G will be kind of pointless imo.  Might as well just tether it to a hotspot.

if they are smart they'll allow removable batteries

It can't be any worse than the 3fuckingDS - i had two fully charged, i carried them around in wifi streetpass mode and within a day they are done without playing a single game.

fucking dumb

unless Sony is confident it can prevent hacking, it won't have a removable battery.  The battery was an integral part of PSP hacking.

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES “PLAYSTATION®VITA” AS THE OFFICIAL NAME FOR NEXT GENERATION PORTABLE ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM
Wi-Fi Model: 24,980 Yen (including tax), $249 and €249
3G/Wi-Fi Model: 29,980 Yen (including tax), $299 and €299
Realizes Unparalleled Interactive Network Entertainment

Tokyo, June 7, 2011 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced
PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) (PCH-1000 series) as the official platform name for the next
generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP). Wi-Fi model will be available
for 24,980 yen (including tax) in Japan, $249 in US and €249 in Europe, 3G/Wi-Fi model will
be available for 29,980 yen (including tax) in Japan, $299 in US and €299 in Europe and
successively launch in global market starting the end of 2011.
“Vita”, which means “Life” in Latin, was chosen as the most appropriate name for the
next generation portable entertainment system as it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. SCE is aiming to transform every aspect of user’s daily life into an entertainment experience.

PS Vita incorporates a beautiful 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode
(OLED) as the front display and a unique multi-touch pad on the rear. Together with the front
touch screen and the rear touch pad, PS Vita offers new game play experiences never before
seen on any device, allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like
motion, through “touch, grab, trace, push and pull” finger motions. Also PS Vita features two
analog sticks which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable
experience, such as shooters, action games, and fighting games. Exciting and attractive new
titles*1 are scheduled to be released from SCE Worldwide Studios, including “GRAVITY

DAZE”, "Uncharted Golden Abyss", "Little Deviants", "Hot Shots Golf", "Reality Fighter",
"Hustle Kings", "ModNation Racers", "Wipeout 2048" and "Super Stardust Delta," as well as
from a broad range of third party game developers and publishers, which will deliver value
only possible on PS Vita.
Also, by having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various
applications, PS Vita will enable infinite possibilities for users to “encounter,” “connect,”
“discover,” “share” and “play” with friends wherever they are.
On January 27, 2011, SCE announced the first PS Vita application, “near”, which will come pre-installed. It will let users discover what games PS Vita users in the vicinity are or were recently playing, as well as let users share their game information.
"near" also enables location-based gaming features such as "gifting," in which a user can access virtual game-related items that other users are sharing, through checking in at geographic locations that others have also visited. The virtual items can include content unlocked from games, such as character costumes, weapons, and treasures.
Sharing these items between users adds a unique dimension to the portable gaming experience on PS Vita while enhancing the social connectivity among the PS Vita community.

Additionally, PS Vita will come pre-installed with a newly developed application
called “Party.” “Party” is an innovative application for a portable entertainment system which
enables users to enjoy voice chat or text chat not only during online gaming, but also when
users are playing different games or using different applications such as internet browser.
Through “Party”, which offers a new form of social networking, and “near”, which enables
users to share their game information with other users anywhere, anytime, users can
dramatically expand the boundaries of interactive communication.
Also a tutorial application called “Welcome Park,” developed specifically to guide
every user about PS Vita’s brand new user interface such as the front touch display and the
multi-touch pad on the rear, will come pre-installed. By playing “Welcome Park”, users can
easily become accustomed to the three dimension-like finger motions used on PS Vita.
SCE will vigorously promote PS Vita towards the launch as the next generation portable
entertainment platform and work towards expanding the portable gaming market.*1 Some title names are tentative. Titles may differ by countries and regions.

Gotta hand it to Sony, they come out of the gate swinging unlike Nintendo. That device looks sexy and the games for it look sick. I won't be an early adopter, of course, since this is Sony we're talking about, but I'll definitely have my hands on one of these for sure.

??? You can use 3G for big file downloads and online gaming. I've known guys who used tethering on their smart phones to go raid in WoW when their internet went down, getting ~190 ping, this is NZ so Amurrica should be well ahead with comfortable network speeds and bandwidth caps for online gaming over 3G right?

Nintendo lost.

They didn't lose.

You and everyone else should quit overreacting. The original PSP was released with the full force of the Playstation brand name juggernaut ushering it through Nintendo's handheld domain, and they were ultimately outdone by a humble device that virtually everyone labeled as a "rush-job." On the other hand, Nintendo does need to lower the price of the 3DS, because, at this stage, even I wouldn't think twice about choosing the Vita over it if I had to choose between the two, especially considering the current 3DS library, which is outright putrid.

If game economy can be effected by the EVE community, I expect Dust to be broke within a month.

If there are ways for EVE players to make ISK through this new game then I'm sure it will flourish.

I think it's the PS3 community side that is in doubt.

Vita is hardware that seems worth early adopting.  Sounds like it makes existing PSP games play and look better.

Are there any other differences between the Wi-Fi only and 3G models? 3G seems like a waste of $50

:lol at whoever though this was going to be a cent more than $300. I think I am owed around $75 for the various bets I made around this.

Also, quit crying about the $50 wi-fi -> 3G price differential. Buy one less shitty Xbox dudebro space  RPG shooter with kinect shoehorned into it and you can buy the 3G model.

It's not so much the price as it is a useless feature.  I mean, you need AT&T.

at least with my 60 gig launch ps3, I got sick chrome styling!

btw, new Ridge Racer is confirmed for NGP.  kinda glad I didn't get the 3DS version.

I think the 3G version will be much more valuable in terms of usability in Japan. It's so dense here that I think the connectivity can be utilized on a more regular basis, so that's why I plan on getting it. Also hoping for asynchronous multiplayer using 3G with games like Hustle Kings, Minna no Golf, etc.

If Ridge Racer Vita doesn't have ALL NEW shits all up in it, it better at least have ALL Ridge Racers PSP 1+2 courses PLUS Ridge 6 and 7. I refuse to buy the same game again. Almost worse than Unbounded.

I won't be an early adopter, of course, since this is Sony we're talking

I will be an early adopter because the security will be at it's shittest in the early models !

With the 3DS the problem is they seem to be going with the "Well it worked for the DS so let's just do that again" - the problem is it is NOT working. The one thing i am fingers-crossed for : the 3DS is underpowered so i'm hoping for some hot 3D side on Metroid or some other hotness like that.

The F-Zero GX 3D dream looks dead - unless i want to play in shitty-frame-rate-o-vision

Well, what else could they have done at this stage? There haven't been a lot of ingenious or gimmicky technological advancements with handheld devices that resonates with the casual consumers lately since the touchscreen, and Nintendo already did that; whereas Sony hasn't. So, for Nintendo, it was only a matter of beefing up the hardware specs and perfecting the novel qualities of the DS, which they have; whether they've done it sufficiently will depend on the consumer in the coming years. The hardware is fine, IMO, but they need to address the other two important pillars, namely the software and pricing, all of which will be addressed hopefully this E3.

3DS needs to be repriced to about $175 if it's going to have a chance. I personally wouldn't spend more than $100 on a 3DS at this point, if that.

Apparently it's a very beautiful game that is also very dull and has a bad translation.

So it's like every other Vanillaware game?

For what it's worth, I would be fine with my 3Ds if it gets some good games.  I didn't like the DS hardware either.  Though it had functionality like a touch screen that the PSP lacked, it was still a crappy system I played because it happened to get a bunch of great games.

I'm not suddenly going to avoid buying third party 3DS games I'm interested in (all two of them) on the off chance that they'd be Vita games.  But I hope others do.  I'd much rather have Resident Evil Revelations and Mega Man Legends 3 on the Vita.

Also, as a whole, the Sony conference kinda sucked.  Outside of the price they show games or tell us anything we didn't know months ago.  The only 'new' game announcements were Modnation Racers and some loot game.  They didn't even pull a Nintendo and say "These people will make games, probably" except for Ken Levine.  More time should have been devoted to the Vita.  Only big thing was the price announcement.

I cracked a huge woody when they announced the price.  That was the most exciting thing I've ever witnessed.
Someday, someone may show you a real, naked woman. It'll change your life.

For the price of one decent naked woman I can buy a Vita AND Uncharted!  And the Vita won't suggest we "get breakfast and hang out" the next day.

In a PlayStation Vita session for European and Australian press at E3 today, Michael Denny, Sony's Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe, confirmed that - to the best of his knowledge - Vita would be region free.

That's good news.  Because presumably it will be like AUD$500 locally.  :auscry
