The elephant in the room right now is software pricing. Apparently GameStop (lulz) are claiming that Vita games will be $40, and Sony is claiming that the production budget for games is closer to PSP than PS3. It's a bit bewildering, because the assets and general quality (looking at, say, Uncharted) seem to suggest a significant step up from PSP...

Price subsidies for identical ports is one thing, but what about Vita-only (if there is going to be such a thing) games? Sony will want to recoup some of those monies since they are taking a loss on the Vita for the first three years.

BTW DC, how much do you reckon they are losing on each Vita unit at 249/299? Any guess? $100? I'm guessing savings from cheaper component fabrication is going to be offset by price drops within those first three years, seems a bit of a long stretch otherwise

If they started with a price and worked backwards i'm guessing that they aren't losing THAT much. $30-40 per unit maybe ? The thing is that Nintendo did Sony a massive favour by massively overpricing the 3DS.

They are also probably covering some of the US cost by the JPN cost - 24980 yen = $372 (!) though currency rates will change of course.

I don't expect price drops - i expect "value packs" for the first 18 months and then they'll evalute where they are sales wise after that.

Yeah the dollar rate is lololol of course, agreed. And Nintendo probably won't even react since they are so fucking stubborn about always making a profit on the HW. I guess their only hope is a big drop in price for the parallax barrier screen, but seems to me that this type of stuff is only ever going to be low-volume production (compared to regular panels).

Will be really interesting to see actual proper game prices and sales, considering PSP SW sales were, well, let's call them modest.

Yeah, even though my excite is at maximum now for the Vita, I still think it's going to have a rough go outside Japan.  Inside Japan, though?  Nintendo could wear five extra pairs of trousers and they're still going to bleed for days with what Sony is about to do to them.

Until Pokemon, anyway.   :-\

other random news:  games might cost $40 (price as listed on Gamestop's site; they were right about the 3DS game price) and the analog sticks do not click in.

I got the Vita demo. Everything is perfect except for the buttons which are tiny tiny and the analog sticks are convex, fiddly, finger cramping nubbins.

Yeah it does. The position of the stick in relation to the buttons also feels really weird. The buttons are REALLY small too, we are talking 3DS levels here.

Button size and analog placements are now concerning me.

@Sho Nuff: How comfortable was it to hold the system? do you see avoiding spreading your fingers over the touch pad as a big problem in the future? and finally: do you have giant hands?

Holding it was fine. Triggers were comfortable, dpad was aces. Multitouch very responsive in front and back--back is tricky to use as you cant see your fingers (duh). And I am 6'2" and have pretty big hands.

I found it sad that the touch screen means you have to get your greasy fingers all over DAT OLED.

yeah, what's up with the d-pad? I've seen it referred to as a floating d-pad (on the good end, Saturn; on the bad, xbox 360) and it appears to be a single exposed piece instead of divided by plastic.

I'm pretty cool on Uncharted Vita.  The two things that keep my interest are Bend, who made great PSP shooters, and news about how the focus would be on puzzles/exploration rather than shooting.  It would be great if Uncharted Vita was literally Tomb Raider with a guy, instead of guy in a jungle shoots a lot of people and solves like three puzzles.

I'm glad Virtua Tennis looks nice on it.  I'll probably pick it up.

The biggest worry I have is that games will try to include gimmicky touch screen crap.  Dynasty Warriors looked awesome in screens, then you see the gameplay video and it's touch screen QTE garbage.

btw, news about the Vita launch:

Hot Shots Golf and Virtua Tennis are launch games.
LittleBigPlanet is not a launch game

For what it's worth, Vita looks like it was made for a game like LBP. I fully intended on skipping it like I skipped the PSP's entry, but the hands-on videos piqued my interest:

i'll only be interested in it if it supports levels from LBP2.  I liked LBP2, but the entire user generated level thing is lost on me because I'm too lazy to swap disks and load up the game on my TV.  It's easier to just pick up the Vita and check that way.

Modnation Racers seemed to have that functionality.  That's another game I might get, maybe.  There is a trial for the PS3 version for Plus members and I might give that a go.  The beta seemed ok but nothing great.  Plus I'll probably be picking up the new Mario Kart 3DS....fool me eight times, still shame on you.

Modnation is something that could work on the Vita, but everything they showed was stuttery and janky as hell. They need to tighten things up (fps and physics), while avoiding painfully long loading times, they might win me over.

I wonder if it's a scaling problem. The screen is 960x544 and that's a far cry from even 1280x720.

Then again, the PSP-2000 was 480x272 and could output a 720x480 display through video out.

Re: Sony @ E3: Please Understand
« Reply #279 on: June 11, 2011, 03:18:11 AM »
Don't think it's as much of a scaling problem as it is a "we-don't-want-the-PSV-to-potentially-canabalize-PS3-sales" problem. Can't say their concerns are unfounded considering I've, personally, been deciding between the two devices myself.

PSP video out sucks, though.  It didn't stretch the picture and left a tiny picture bordered on all edges.

regardless Sony should get video out happening.  fact that they've firmly dismissed it instead of giving an "we're looking into the possibilities of a potential video output feature" answer is worrying.

and how was PSP video out captured in the past? Vita units at E3 had hdmi out
