the launch situation is a fuck because there're two dozen quality games launch window, so Sony felt the need to artificially space games out delaying Gravity Daze to Spring (rumors are May).  Unit 13 is also delayed a bit.

and I've decided to just go with the 3G on Amazon.  I read that GPS still works without a plan and I don't know if it's true but it can come in handy if I don't have my phone with me and other poor justifications for spending more money on a toy.

Quote
John Koller, the senior director for PlayStation hand-held consoles, said the PS Vita would allow users “to feel engaged and still feel like they’re playing on a console.” The target audience for the Vita are men in their 20s who play video games eight hours a week or more and own a PlayStation3 console.

The trick will be getting those young men to put down their phones and pick up the PS Vita.

The cost of the marketing campaign at $50 million is “the largest platform launch in terms of marketing investment we’ve ever had,” Mr. Koller said.

Sony worked with Deutsch, part of the Interpublic Group of Companies, to create the campaign that includes television commercials, billboards, retail partnerships, digital banner ads and a significant presence in social media. The theme of the campaign, “Never Stop Playing,” will be featured on many of the ads as will the Twitter-influenced hashtag, #gamechanger.

I honestly think the launch titles should have been more spread out from the start.  With launch big hitters they could have had a major Vita game every 2-3 weeks for like the next 6 months.  Now it's a billion titles fighting for launch sales and then it'll be nothing for a while outside of Gravity Daze and Unit 13.

yeah, spacing it out would've been better.  my main thing with gravity daze is that it's a really cool looking original IP for this system; it's not just a portable version of wipeouthotshotsmarvelvscapcomsmodnationracersuncharted.  personally, the reason I'm passing on all those games is because I still haven't played wipeout hd fury, just played uncharted 3, and excuses of that nature.

I'm not even sure what's launching, tbh.  it's a bunch of games.  I didn't know that modnation was at launch.  I still don't know, but people are mentioning it, so maybe? That doesn't make sense when wipeout is the sony racers for launch, but I guess there are options now...or ridge racer.

being all hypocritical now, I'd buy a version of twisted metal for the vita.

I agree.  GD looks like the first "real meaty and polished original game".

I might just import it because of the US delay.  Not sure yet.  Someone said the game is planned to have a lot of DLC and with Vita you'll be stuck buying the DLC from the store that matches the game region, so that's a lot of bad exchange rate yen PSN points for GD dlc, plus the game is like $70+ shipping.

Probably should just wait.  I think I'll play the launch stuff and see how quickly I get tired of it and want GD.

Because Sony never learns. Advertising to people who already know what the product does and every single boring stat about the machine instead of  getting the millions of people who don't know what it is interested. According to the Sony fans on Gaf it's all "part of the plan". I'm sure the stores stocking it are onboard with that line of thinking. especially if it fails to sell and they move it to the back of the store.

I've had time on one and it's a nice bit of kit but that games lineup is seriously lackluster i would feel like a chump paying anymore than Ł20 on any of these games. Only Gravity Daze has really captured my attention. But i won't be buying a handheld for just one game. I'm holding well back from this launch as this thing is going to be heavily discounted and pretty quickly i feel.

And unlike Nintendo who were able to fob off their base by throwing them some old junk they had in the attic . I don't think Sony will be doing any 'ambassador' game packs they'll just tell early buyers to suck it up.

All valid points except calling the launch lineup lackluster is wat.  Even if you're not a fan of the games, it's impossible to name a better launch lineup for any system EVER besides the US Dreamcast launch.

What are people seriously expecting for a launch lineup?  God of War 4, Uncharted 4, Grand Theft Auto 5, FFXV, Street Fighter 5??

That launch line-up is fine if you love the idea of playing ps3 ports (slightly downgraded) on your handheld. But if you already own a console and don't have a reason to game on a handheld its not really that enticing outside of playing console style games in bed. In that sense its not really that different from the Wii U tablet beaming concept.

It's not the same as a console style launch because those games generally aren't just duplicates of games already out. (Well they aren't supposed to be. Some are)

anyone who is getting the 3G version, maybe hold off on buying Super Stardust HD

it's the "free" game you get with the 3G version, plus the DLC.  by free sony means you buy a month of the 3G service, then get the game.  i'm still confused by the deal.

Got Hot Shots today and decided to switch to my U.S. account.  Then it hit me...no online in Wipeout.  So I buy an online pass for the $10 rip-off price, and...it doesn't work.  You HAVE to play on a Japanese account to play online.  So fuck it; the game's only $30 new anyway...bought it again.   :-[

I think I may also rebuy Dynasty Warriors Next next week.

Or you could play Japanese wipeout on Japanese account and just copy over friends list to that account as well.

That's my plan.  I've always had a US account for the US store on PSN but the friendslist is empty since my main account for trophies/friends is my JPN one.  Will refriend everyone on that account and just play JP Vita games on the JP one and US Vita games on the US one.  Only down side is split trophy lists, but oh well.

It is.

Vita is definitely, no questions asked, a step down from PSP/PS3/DS region free.  If PS4 is similar it'll be even more annoying.

It's still 200 steps better than DSi/3DS and 100 steps better than Wii/X360 (because Wii can be modded to region free and because X360 has like 1/1000 region-free games).

There will be some annoyances, but I will have two mem sticks so when I put in a JP game I will put in my JP mem stick and vice-versa.  End of story.  I usually don't switch games very often since I only like playing 1 game at a time on a system, so it's not a big deal with me.

No, you're okay there.  What you CAN'T play are full games downloaded from to a Japanese account on a U.S. account (and vice versa), and online passes are also tied to whichever region you buy the game from.  No idea on DLC yet but I'm sure it's region-locked.

PSP games on PSN need to start dropping in price, and some games are just missing.  I was looking at my UMDs and there are only a few I'd care to keep playing on my Vita.  One was Mega Man Powered Up and it's not there.  The Mega Man X game is only $10 though, which is a pretty nice price.  Other games are still $40.

Metal Gear Portable Ops is $10 too.  Might consider giving it another shot since the controls might be manageable this time.  I was messing around with it the other day on my Go and it could work quite well on the Vita.  Vita allows the right stick to mimic the left stick, and Portable Ops has an option to move with the d-pad and aim with the stick.

Uhhh, are you sure?

I was under the impression that if he's on a US account he won't be able to access and use JP account software and will have to change to a JP account to play them which will erase all his settings for his US account on the card.

I'll see what happens.  I don't think I'd buy games on my Japanese account.  Unless there's also dumbness if I import the physical retail copy of a game.

the experience with my PSP now is like this (through my PS3):

I want to install a Jpn/Euro demo.  Plug in my PSP, it says it's associated with my NA account, I say switch it.  Demo is transferred to my PSP; nothing is deleted or lost.  On my PSP I can now play that demo, but none of my NA games on the memory stick.  To play those again, I just plug it back into my PS3 and re-associate it with that account.

I mainly want to play Ragnarok Odyssey because it looks cool and hasn't been announced for North America.  I mean, if they're not bringing it over during the launch window, when else will they bother localizing something like that.

Shinobido 2, Ragnarok Odyssey, Gravity Daze, and (surprisingly) Unit 13 are the Vita games I'm most interested in.

ok ok, it seems like people on gaf brought it up.  from what I understand importing is fine as long as the game doesn't have an online pass, because you can't redeem it from a NA account...or something.

Online or DLC.  If it has DLC you can play the main game on your US account but will need to play the DLC parts on your JPN account and I'm not sure if the save from your US account will load on your JP account.  So if there will be DLC like Gravity Daze it makes sense to just play it on your JP account.

It was just the Sony games before (Hot Shots, Uncharted, Wipeout, Mod Nation Racers, etc.), but the third party stuff should be up between today and Thursday.

Get her an iPhone, seriously. iOS seems to have far more chick friendly games, stuff like put the thing in the bin and tidy the kitchen. Oh and that sandwich simulator.
