Poland Bore - What is this?

I am intrigued!  What is the history behind this event?  Are the lanterns symbolic?  What else happens during this festival (ie. food, activities...etc)?

They're reenacting the hit movie Tangled (just released last week in Poland).

Apparently those sky lanterns were originally used in Asian warfare as a sort of signal or sky blimp.
