How hilarious is it for this thread to pop up when my next thread was going to be about US universities recommendations. Maybe I should give the site a try.

Don't. They partner with for-profit colleges that don't care about your education.

Not a good idea, they're in bed with for-profit colleges.

Yeah, I wasn't serious lol. But I really should create that thread as soon as possible, list the ministry's recommended Universities and ask what you guys think.

it really is disgusting that these places havent been exposed/cracked down on they way they should be.  i know of multiple people who've been severely fucked over by these places, and end up walking away with an associates and 50-60k worth of debt.  60 grand and the ability to get a job that pays maybe 20-30k a year.  i think if i realized that i was gonna be in debt to one of these shitholes for the rest of my life when i could have easily got a legit bachelors for half the price, i'd have to fucking kill someone.

You'd have to be dumb as fuck to get an associate degree in the first place.  It really doesn't accomplish anything.

Actually, it's worse than that, $60K for an Associates?!?

I know some people who had their associates paid for by a company/etc. just because it was so cheap to send the person to the Community College for the courses rather than set up their own training system.

(Disclosure: I'm a big fan of the Community College system properly used over throwing everyone into the four year university system immediately after high school.)

The one aspect I love about these ads are how they are based around someone with poor educational performance* in a job like a waitress or something, and then they suddenly get a degree and have a fancy salary! In a way they're even worse than just the for-profit colleges fundamentally as they're perpetuating the degree = $$$ concept that even public, private and non-profit institutions have been wrestling with for a decade.

Even the ITT and Phoenix ones are often more about people in existing jobs who get the degree of whatever level to move up in their existing job or get some comparable skill/credentials.

I have to admit I love late night ads though.

*Not to cast aspersions on anyone who may have been derelict in high school or lower but dominated college and/or has engaged themselves properly in their job. Even though such a thing could never, ever, happen.

My mom took a few online courses setup by a community college once- I noticed that her workload was maybe 2-3 times that of what I had to do at that same college. I suspect since they use busy work to measure effort/attendance- online courses arent quite as easy as they're made out to be I think.

For profit colleges especially grate on me for a personal reason:

My sister went to a for profit college in spite of everyone telling her not to go.  She wanted to be a personal trainer so she signed up at a for profit college.  Naturally, the admissions office told her that everyone just couldn't hire enough personal trainers from their school.  Everyone talked to her until they were blue in the face about how bad of a deal it was and how she was better off not going anywhere.  Still, she insisted as she bought full in to the idea that personal trainers out of their program made $150 an hour.  I can't make this shit up.

Unsurprisingly, it turned out to be a joke.  It was essentially a $25,000 training course for a test that most people didn't pass anyway.  Naturally, the school didn't hesitate to require expensive textbooks and hell, even a trip to Las Vegas.  Why not?  The poor saps were making it rain.  Few people passed the tests and fewer people got a job.  Most people were SOL with a pile of debt.  They were worse off before than ever bothering to go.  Although even a lot of public universities these days present the same issue.

The best part is that until she pays off the debt, they won't give her a certificate.  That's right, it isn't even an Associate's degree.  So she has no proof that she went to a shitty for profit college.  Even worse is that she put that joke of a school on her resume and got nowhere.  It was only after she took it off her resume did people start biting.  I bet there are millions of suckers who put "Kaplan University" proudly on their resume, not realizing that putting that on there pretty much meant that the trash can was its fate.

Now she makes $13 an hour with some good benefits, which isn't bad for a high school graduate.  Keep in mind, that is how they see it because she excluded the for profit college on her resume.  Once she pays off the debt, she's planning on returning to a legitimate school.

I think the biggest reason why people go to these schools is that they get wowed by the bullshit figures.  I mean, most universities will fiddle with their figures to make it seem like a basket weaving major has a 94% job placement.  This stuff goes beyond that.  They were promising my sister almost guaranteed six figures starting out.  She could be her own boss!  Most of these people are too ignorant to do any research themselves, knowing that $150 an hour for a starting graduate of any school is limited to maybe 1 percent of 1 percent of graduates.  So they think that they can get out of their shitty lives with a guaranteed $80,000 a year career as a paralegal.  They're desperate and willing to believe anything.

Long story short: they should be banned or at least need to have warning labels all over admission forms.  Something like "Warning: What you were told is probably bullshit.  Check out http://www.bls.gov/ for actual statistics." or like the new cigarette boxes that have pictures of people hacking up a lung, they can have a picture of some dope with a Dental Assistant degree from LOL Fuck U working three jobs to stay above water.

yeah i've had the same experience.  all the online classes ive taken gave me shittons of busy work to do each week, including stupid exercises that require an otherwise useless $200 textbook.  hell, my university tacks on an extra $160 to the price of the class, prolly just to make up what they wont get why students buy their parking passes.

I would totally recommend a prospective university student hit up community college for those core credits, whether or not they wanted to actually get an AA before transferring.  If you're paying for it yourself and don't have a scholarship, it's not worth paying the premium for what are essentially High School+ courses.

Not only is community college cheaper, but more often than not, you have a better chance of getting into the classes you need.

Community college transfers are having a hard time getting into 4-year universities here in Washington state.

Depends on the class really. There's typically a lot of reading, but overall the work load isn't bad. I took a sociology class online and all we had to do was read some shit then come to a class meeting once a week. On the flip side I took a math class online in high school and it was the worst thing ever. Basically "here's 60 problems, do them this week or die lolol."
