TTT has a shit ton of awesome parts, but the Merry/Pippen stuff was beyond annoying. Same as in the book. And I hated that Aragorn death fakeout scene  ::)

why did they think it was a good idea to add ANOTHER fakeout death in a series that's full of them, especially when it'd only been like a half hour since gandalf came back.

anyway rumbler proves that lotr is indeed the greatest triology ever since there is so much crap in that list

motherfucking :bow ARAGORN :bow2

I remember seeing that Aragorn fakeout and being SO pissed in the theater. Also, I was puzzled why they revealed Gandalf's return in the teaser trailer.

The Matrix suffered the fate a lot of failed trilogies do. Great first film that was never intended to have a sequel but became a massive hit so studio wanted more and the filmmakers had no fucking clue what more to do and so we ended up with shit.

the concept of the matrix worked as an allegory but than fell apart once the writers started treating it like a real thing.

Trilogies where all 3 films are good:

The Lord of the Rings
Star Wars
Toy Story
The Man With No Name
Indiana Jones
The Godfather (3 is nowhere near as good as 1 and 2, not even close but on it's own it's pretty watchable. Outside of Sofia Coppola)

absolutely, but that's not even fair to compare.  i can't think of any instance where an adapted movie has been better than the book.

It was more aimed at the people being proud that they have not and would not pick up the books.

All are solid good movies but none of them are amazing. There is no Raiders or Empire Strikes Back or Godfather Part II or Fellowship of the Ring in the Bourne series. It's sad to see the Bourne franchise is about to be driven into the ground. I like Jeremey Renner but do we really need more Bourne movies? Especially without Matt Damon?

Honestly it's impossbile to have a perfect trilogy. There are plenty with at least 3 solid watchable movies.  But if the criteria that all 3 are equally amazing? Never going to happen. Temple of Doom is nowhere near the level of Indy 1 or 3. Return of the Jedi started to show a lot of the issues that would plauge the prequels. The Godfather III is well The Godfather III. It can go on and on. But for those you can watch all 3 in a row and have a very good time and not have any jump the shark sort of films.

Of course the book is better. A book is almost always better than the movie, whether we are talking about a trilogy or single film.

Hell a lot of the times novelizations of movies are better than the actual movie.

the "book" is a flipping Alan Dean Foster-level novelization of the movie

movie is actually based on the short story The Sentinel which is much better than the novel

(movie is still better)

The Sentinel was the inspiration for the screenplay, both the movie and the book are based off the screenplay [with Kubrick going his own direction with the movie and Arthur C. Clarke going his own way with the book].

Tolkien's writing style in the LotR books is dry, overly flowery, and often obtuse.

I love The Hobbit book, but the LotR books were boring as shit. Oh great, here's another part where Tolkien is going to make a song about a fucking mountain.

So what I'm saying is if someone who loves a book is disappointed with the movie adaption, the book was probably shit to begin with.
Harry Potter book series was a decently enjoyable young reader book series, the films were mostly god awful.

It took me forever to finish the 4th Potter book (which I liked, but not nearly as much as the first three), and I didn't like the movie either. Was super bummed at how dumb the 5th movie was too, although I watched it again some time later and appreciated it more

Sorry, the 4th HP film (and book) is fucking awful.  Made me quit the whole series.
I have seen it a few times and don't really remember it but I don't remember thinking it was worse than the 1st or 2nd movie.  The 2nd movie is definitely the worst.  Ugh.

After some thought, here are some movies that are better than the book that I have seen and read:

The Godfather
The Princess Bride
Stepford Wives
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Dr Strangelove
Barry Lyndon
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
Lolita (I think the book and film are just about even keel)
2001
MASH
Forrest Gump
Fight Club
Casino Royale
The Lord of the Rings

And though it's not a movie, I think the first season of Dexter is better than the book I read a short time ago.

DH part 2 is awful. The book ending of
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Voldermort having the spell backfire on him quickly and fall into a heap on the floor in such a weak manner was awesome. Huge endlessly long lightsabe rip-off fight with him and Harry with him screaming YAAAAARRRGHHH constantly then dying by being turned into stone then literally exploding into scraps of paper just...blah.

The Snape stuff was handled very well though at least.

The ending was totally underwhelming in that regard.  I was expecting something more.  But I found the majority of fights boring and the ones that were exciting were way too short.

That one in film 5 was great. DH part 2 blew it because what made it good in the book was it wasn't some action packed battle to the death. The movie turned it into the typical
star wars style duel every scifi/fantasy movie copied.

also i'm still made they fucked up frodo's (second) fakeout death in the spider's lair.  that was one of my favorite scenes in the book.

What changed? I can't remember

it made it seem that frodo really was dead - no pulse, his body ended up getting carried off by orcs, etc.  but what was more interesting was that sam picked up the ring and decided to carry on the quest to destroy - something NO other character in the book could even consider because they were too tempted by its power.  sam was so dedicated to frodo that he was able to do it though, which made him awesome.  it was his best scene in the books and they cut it. :-\

also himu is right, the movies >> the books.  how many hundreds of pages of scenery chewing do we need jesus
