9 hours in or so, level 9.

-cant seem to find any quests that are suitable atm, bandits in echo caves turned out to be sone crazy add monsters straight out of The Descent. Really dunno where to go next :(

-pathfinding of enemies is pretty buggy, i took out some dude mage who had nettlebane without getting hit cause kept firing into a tree.

For next gen Bethesda should redo combat a bit.

So far Fallout 3 was a bit better imho, slicker.

The streams have crossed. The end is nigh. Get ready to be crushed by a giant marshmallow man.

Skyrim got a 40/40 in Famitsu.

Good for it.

I'm having a hard time understanding the PS3 issue-- is this only when you play for hours at a time?  because it seems like people can reset the system and play more.  and the complaints on GAF are like "I was playing for 5 hours straight and then it happened arghghgh nerd rage"

not to minimize, I'm thinking about buying it over break.

I'm tempted to pick it up. Probably sometime next year when it's dropped in price and my backlog isn't so ridiculous.

no cache clearing on PS3, but it sounds like rebooting the game has the same effect.

Obviously famitsu is a total fucking joke that gave nintendo dogs a 40, but YEAH.  Skyrim is a really good game that will win a lot of goty awards.

Destruction spells in this game can be a bitch even at the highest level... if the enemy is using it. Its funny that Destruction magic doesn't have that much oomph even with the relevant perks but when a high level Necromancer is using it it can kill you quickly if he/she is not dealt with. I'm sure mods will fix this but Destruction magic feels unbalanced.

I've been in a few dungeons where I got to the end and had to run all the way back out because I had no chance at victory. I think the difficulty is just right.

Regular dragons (the ones which pop up everywhere and aren't quest related) are kind of pushovers now that I am at level 30, but I'm running into some tough scraps in the dungeons and side quests against deathlords and necromancers, and my follower/wife is starting to get taken out of the fights pretty quickly

Sometimes there's challenging areas, but it's always easy enough to cheese difficult enemies, just hide behind things or circle around tables hitting with range etc. Only time I ever really have a problem is if I get out of my depth in battle with high level magic users, then I just run away wait till they can't see me, hit 'em, run away, rinse and repeat. Bears and Sabre Cats used to mess me up too, they run so fast and are tanks. There were a number of times where I'd happily beat a Dragon only to be killed in 1 or 2 hits by a Sabre Tooth down the road

Alteration's Magic Resistance perk is pretty useful if you find magic usage is effin you up. I've already dumped the max 3 points into it for a total of 30% total magic resistance. If things get really hairy I've got my Dragon Shield that has 24% more magic resistance but I doubt I'll really need it. Right now i'm tryna build up my Heavy Armor and Restortion skills for more levels but honestly there's no more perks that are really important to me. Maybe the 1000 more gold for every merchant at the top of the Speechcraft skill tree to help me along with lagging skills that are a pain to level.

Got this as an early Christmas present over the weekend.  Game is freaking gorgeous on the PC and runs surprisingly well.

Is it possible to play through this game as a straight up warrior with no magic skills?  I tried that in Oblivion and got my butt kicked.

I want to know now because games like this feel so overwhelming with my current schedule and I don't wanna start all over just to make a new character.

What about investing XP on certain weapons?  I know the loot is almost always uneven in games this big.

You can't fuck yourself over with a "build" in this game, because you level up shit by concentrating on stuff. So the more you use 2h swords, the better you'll get. If you don't use magic, your magic stats will be shit. But if you use magic a lot, you'll be a magic powerhouse. If you like shields, your shield stat will be way up there. So on and so forth.

I've found you'll evenly find the weapons you need so you don't need to worry about that too much. Merchants generally have different types of weapons for you levels if you end up wanting something specific that you can't seem to find in dungeons. Also, you can play a little fast and loose with perk allotment but I'd definitely hone in on a weapon type you want (which is just Bows, Two-Handed and One-Handed) and plunk down some perk points in the perk that raises your skill with that weapon. I found I let my skills with my main weapon and armor lag a bit, actual face to face battles with enemies could own me due to this (since I mainly played being sneaky and stealthy at first).

Secondary skills like smithing, enchanting and alchemy can be done at your leisure but they provide great benefits if you build them up quick (as I did with Alchemy at first).

I've never had the urge to kill a townsperson in any Elder Scrolls until I met the White Phial alchemy owner (the one that's dying). I was cooking up some shit at the stores alchemy station and I heard him fucking sassing me from across the store and was like "Oh man FUCK YOU" and went to kill him. Game wouldn't let me kill him since I finished the quest he provided and whenever I click on him it says he's sleeping and dying. Fuck that shit.

there are weird leaps in difficulty sometimes, i ran across a bandit thug a little while ago who knocked an alarming amount of health off me before i liberated his head from the constraints of his neck

for the most part, though, it seems like it is well balanced

also, read this on the UESPwiki regarding followers:

Quote
A follower's stats are determined based on the level the player is at when he or she first enters the zone that the follower is in. Once generated, the follower's stats do not increase at all. For example, Lydia is usually one of the first followers players will have access to, and most players receive her at a lower level. As such, most players' Lydias will have low stats for the entire game.

If you have an attachment to a certain follower and wish to continue to use him or her after he or she has become obsolete, you can update his or her stats by dismissing the companion, then opening the console, clicking the follower in question, typing "disable" and then typing "enable" without the quotation marks, then ask them to rejoin. The follower's inventory will remain unaffected, but his or her stats will all be updated to match the player's current level.

Same thing for Dungeons, first time you enter the game locks the enemies level to your level, so if you can't beat them you can come back later to annihilate giving a sense of progression. I think it's pretty janky but I have never had to leave and come back to a dungeon so far so it's not really a problem.

AMD released performance drivers the other day so now you can finally use Crossfire on this one.  Tried it out last night and my framerate is insane, which makes sense since this is just a Direct X9 game but still.....it's something to see.

That too, but followers should be invulnerable simply because the combination of bad A.I. and janky combat is going to inevitably lead to a lot of unintentional deaths, no matter how careful you're trying to be.

I assume they're not so the player has the option of killing them, but they should've just had some dialogue tree come up if you start attacking them and become vulnerable as a result of choosing to fight them.

They just should've been completely invincible if they were actually following the player. If they were not being used THEN they should've been killable. The whole setup is practically designed around accidental murder.

Im still using lydia- she has awesome armor; how do followers die anyway? Lydia will get low and just kinda stumble around but wont die. Also if an area looks a little too "complicated" ill tell her to wait for me to return and depend on my summon creatures

I think the funniest thing is how followers/summons will take damage from rocks on the ground if you trigger a trap before falling into it. Lydia never makes it past piles of rocks from traps.

Is there an easy way to know if a book will give you skill points without looking at every single book?  I don't even look at them anymore unless I find one in a dungeon or unless it's in a very prominent place.  And is there any reason to ever pick them up?
