I can think of probably 5 people offhand that are better songwriters than any of those guys, and from the same time period too. They didn't sell a bajillion albums but yeah, none of those guys are particularly great shakes at songwriting.

The best thing that can be said re: the Pumpkins live is that they had Jimmy from the Frogs play some songs with them. And I know, I saw them live 4 times during the Gish/SD era.

and even more amazing live

and their last album was good

while the rest of that era is deceased or billy corgan (tell me the difference)

eddie's lyrics were very personal on early albums, kind of painfully so

I like his comments on how the meaning of Alive changed from what he had in mind when he wrote it to what it became when the audience heard it.

The funny thing is that the Pixies' two best albums (Surfer Rosa and Doolittle) came out during the 80's, but even they're not quite as good early 90's output is better than pretty much anything else rockwise that came out that decade.

I was a gigantic Pumpkins fan in the 90s. Much bigger than Diablos and I actually saw the band live numerous times during their run (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000). Even flew to Chicago for the final show at the Metro. With that said, Corgan is a gigantic egotistical dickwad who should stop trying to make music.
