Here is ultimately what I would kinda want from any console.

The only part I like about the Wii U is the streaming to the gamepad aspect. That's actually a useful feature that suits my lifestyle.

I play games when I sit down at my computer or I sit down to play the console. They are both in the same spot and same location.

Sometimes I'm too tired to sit in an upright position and play games though. This is often late at night so instead I get in bed or on the couch and use my ipad to either play games or watch netflix.

The idea of being able to do that in bed with my controller is very appealing to me. I'm never going to buy a strictly portable game system because I don't travel enough nor would I ever use it in public so a console based solution would be good for me.

The thing is I don't need the entire system to be based around the gimmicks of touch and stuff. I'd rather have almost a traditional controller like the current 360 and then a super controller with a screen for the streaming stuff so that games are designed with the original pad in mind, and the streaming controller is strictly just a streaming controller. That is what I would want although I'm not sure how many people are also in my position to make such a thing a viable strategy.

you know... the one that's been on demo at the Science center place in Odiaba for the last 5 years that works with the PS2 for a whole load of demos?

My assumption is that it's that what they are going for and that each of the two breakaways will have a smaller "move" ball and that a dual cam Move equivalent will come bundled with each machine.


p.s. the demos included quite a few neet things - there was some sort of NFC style reader on the base of each controller so you could go through a book full of building blocks and pick a piece per controller part - then you could assemble the two pieces in mid air by alterating the orientation of your control parts.

But barely anyone is asking how much will this things cost.I  mean Nintendo admitted they are losing money on WiiU so unless Nintendo is run by clueless chicken I just don't see how the rest will be even around $400 without substantial loss.

Dunno,but I do seem to remember somebody here saying that Nintendo was at some point losing money on Wii in some territory(UK,I think).

As for Vita,I think that Sony reluctance to drop the price tells a lot.Same with MS/Sony sticking to $200-$300 like crazy.Shrinking stuff has gotten a lot more expensive,I suspect that is the reason why MS and Sony are going from the start with single large chips.

to counter this using a smaller and (presumably) newer American apartment, Wii U signal goes maybe ~25-30 feet, and that's including two walls.  but at 30 feet, moving the controller at all causes it to lose signal.  if I hold it still, it's still the same low-lag streaming across that distance.  comparatively, the PS3 to Vita streaming covers a greater range, but the heaps of lag make it useless for action games.

I'm sure it can easily be improved upon.  That's why I'm sort of interested in the nvidia shield.

same layout as the dual shock but far more comfortable.  I felt the same way about the wii classic controller pro that borrows the dual shock design.  I'd prefer a 360 layout/offset analogs, but I'd be fine if sony improved the ergonomics after all these years. 

and drop pressure sensitive buttons.  as far as I know, the MGSHD and ZoEHD collection are the only ps3 games that use them.  funny enough, both were two of the only ps2 games to use them.

I am privy to information that is under NDA and I can't share specific details but I will detail my thoughts to maybe give an idea of what I've seen and where I think they are going with this. At this moment in time I happen to know more about Durango than Orbis. I wrote a few pieces on a developers forum and since I don't have a lot to do I decided to copy and paste and rewrite some parts of it for Reddit. This is going to be long but somebody might like it. I'll break it down into sections so I don't put too many off.

Sony and Microsoft's apparent strategy for next-gen consoles:
Last thing I want to say about this is that it seems like Microsoft and Sony are taking different approaches. Microsoft are going with slower DDR RAM but more of it, they seem to be "saving" a lot of RAM for OS functions, in other words it looks like Microsoft have some sort of plans, maybe Kinect 2.0 or something. Sony on the other hand went with less RAM but it is faster GDDR RAM and Sony are also seemingly spending more money on the GPU. In other words the way it looks the PS4 will be engineered to be a pure gaming machine with more power, the 720 will fall in between the PS4 and Wii U in terms of power. It's interesting though because Microsoft are intent on saving a lot of money on memory and GPU from the looks of it and then they allocate a lot of RAM for some sort of software function. I'm thinking maybe it might actually be true that Kinect 2.0 is going to ship with all 720's, I thought it would be too expensive but considering how much they would save by going for slower RAM and a lower powered GPU and the fact that they are allocating a huge 3GB to software functions Kinect 2.0 makes sense. I have to confess I am a little disappointed with Microsoft's direction and I like the fact that Sony are so intent on lavishing every penny on making it a monster console. The two consoles from the looks of it should cost around the same but a lot of the money for the 720 will seemingly go to Kinect 2.0 while Sony will invest all that money in faster RAM and a more powerful GPU.

TL;DR/What to expect:
The first version of the next generation consoles should draw less power than the first version versions of the 360 and PS3 which means there probably won't be a power brick and the cases might be a little smaller too. With sufficient RAM resolution becomes "cheap" so you won't be sacrificing much visual detail by going to a higher resolution, in other words 1080P and 60 FPS should be the standard across the entire board. You should have a sleek quiet little box that sits under your TV, has power gating so when you are Netflixing it sips only a tiny amount of power but stays quiet and relatively cool even when it's running full power. Your games will look around Battlefield 3 on high with most/all settings maxed, 1080P60. Basically as a console gamer you will see a huge leap and everybody else will see incredible bang for buck.
The next generation consoles are being designed in mind with components that should mean they can be sold for less and still make a profit. It seems like neither Microsoft nor Sony will subsidise their next generation consoles, they will make a profit with every console sold. In fact they might be able to make a profit with a launch price of $300 to $350 though of course they could sell it for more and just make bigger margins. Either way though this is a healthier strategy and if they don't go for huge margins you should be able to pick one up for a reasonable price. It also seems like Sony and Microsoft could each match each other for price, one companies console doesn't seem to cost much more to make than the others.

I would spend a extra $200 just for 5-10 fps but I don't even bother buying the fastest ram anymore.  Aside from memory benchmarks, having ram faster than ddr3 1600 offers no benefits.

You may have noticed that there are lots of rumours flying about regarding next-gen consoles. No one knows definitely when Microsoft and Sony will unveil their successors to the current Xbox and PlayStation, but Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai has said that it will let Microsoft make the first move.

In the Business section of The Times today, Hirai said, "Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?"

With Nintendo already out the next-gen blocks with the Wii U, can Sony hold its bottle until the Microsoft announces? Surely his comments are slightly disingenuous, since there would be relatively little scope for changing the specs of the PlayStation this late in its development cycle. It's more likely that the additional time would be use to adjust the messaging surrounding the announcement.
