on sale at Target for $40 this week.  Just finished the first two chapters and hoo-boy, this game is freaking ace.

its quite the looker too, and the much bitched about framerate troubles has yet to occur in only of instance of the spider boss.  It isn't quite but is the closest thing I can remember in recent or distant memory of an action game with a hard science fiction storyline, so its stoking my nerd muscle and the gameplay itself is top-tier 3rd person shooter.

so I've put bit more time into this, and I still really dig it, but I really can't rave about it unequivocally anymore.

the normal sections of the game, and the gunplay, stage and enemy design, are all really top notch.  I mean it, its fun as hell and well made and well paced, that is, until the boss encounters.

frankly, as far as am into the game, the bosses kinda suck, the technical hiccups all seem to happen pretty much only in the boss arenas and every one of them so far is kinda obnoxious in how you have to beat them.  They're merely annoying, its not a fatal wound, and they may get better later on, but so far, its a bit of a setback.

also, while the storytelling technique is pretty damn good, the narrative itself isn't quite living up to its early potential.  Keep in mind, I'm only downgrading this from a A to a B+, its still a damned awesome game and I'm already looking forward to my next playthrough, its just a little rougher around the edges then I first took it for.

So I'm not finding this game as nearly as awesome as the rest. Just finished chapter 2. Finding the gunplay and game mildly boring.

Also, there is literally no one playing this game online. good thing I'm not a trophy whore, as I wouldn't be able to any of the online ones lol

this game is $10 on Amazon right now (activates on steam)

played about 2 hours.

It's OK so far.

Shooting is decent. It's appropriately silly and Japanese in tone.

The Boss battles so far have been annoying and not really fun imo.

Okay, but I can't figure out how to get past the part at the first where my partner asks me about the radio. Do I just need to press some button or something?

Only played the first chapter but I actually quite like it already. I must earn maximum Big Bo trust :bow

This seems like a pretty surprising concept for a Japanese dev to tackle...

The dialog/trust and squad selection stuff seems pretty interesting too. Nifty enough game so far, even if the mechanics are solid but not spectacular. Shooting the SMG did feel pretty great.

I got in on the Amazon deal too.  Can you do all that voice communication stuff on PC? I tried it in the 360 demo and it's a pretty neat gimmick.  I remember the regular controller comrose only had tactical options, unless I'm mistaken.

My money is on Big Bo. Bob Sapp doesn't telegraph his punches so much as he calls ahead and then sends a follow-up email.

I mean, I'm really loving this game. The combat is mostly pretty fun and I love the setting/story/characters, but some of the sequences [especially the turret stuff and any time you have to control a vehicle] are just absolutely abysmal. What were they thinking?

The moral of Binary Domain is that if you have sex with a robot, shit will get awkward. Then again, who better to push those boundaries than the Japanese?

I actually really like the story and characters in Binary Domain, which is pretty rare for a story-heavy Japanese game. There's a lot of cutscenes, but they never feel too long. Most of the writing is over-the-top and cliched, but purposefully silly. It's decent scifi-action movie, basically. Why can't Square at least meet this low bar with their RPGs?

yeah, on the whole I was pretty impressed with the game, and I'm bummed that they will almost certainly never, ever, ever be a sequel to this.  The setting and characters were a cut above most games of the genre, and I would have loved to see how a more mechanically sound sequel would have played out.

oh well, at least I can count on yet another Call of Duty/Assassins Creed/Battlefield next year.
sigh.

Boss fights are terribly cheap. So bad at times.

Yeah, the boss battles and some of the rail sequences are just terrible, my two biggest complaints right there. More enemy variety would be nice, too, but it doesn't bother me that much.

for some reason it goes from perfectly smooth to 15 fps, controls terribly, and restarts the whole section if you fail.

I don't know what was up with it.  I restarted my computer and the next section was fine.

I'm digging it.  The shooting feels good and the character interaction stuff reminds me of Alpha Protocol-lite.  Mostly the overall style of it is what I'm into.

And is there a purpose for max trust other than achievements? I have Bo, Big at maximum trust now.  I don't know if it's better to keep him in or bring in another character to raise their trust.

I just beat it on "Rust-em-up" after 10 hours and got the OK ending. I'm semi-tempted to give it another go and try to get the top ending but I don't know if I liked it that much!

Shindo dying makes sense, I guess. The detective just disappears and never shows up again.  Cain disappears even though I had high trust with him.  And then in the post-credits scene Dan save Faye in some country.

Fun game.  The squad stuff is shallow thinking about it, but I thought the combat was satisfying enough and I dug the aesthetic.

Thanks for this, I'm enjoying the game a lot more now.

And yeah, this is a fucking great PC port. Aside from the wonky configuration program being separate they did an awesome job. Runs like butter on maximum settings, no hitching at all. Makes me wish they'd done ports of Yakuza too (ha ha, as if).
