Yep, that's how I feel too. I'm among the few who really dug the overbearing hyper-immersion of FC2.

I know pilonv1 likes Chick so I won't go into one of my usual rants about him.

Far Cry 2 was one of those games that forum people always like because it had big ideas in it in a genre that is more about production values now. Which is fine.

I think there is a big difference between making a game with just big ideas and actually making a fun entertaining title.

Which is not to say that Far Cry 3 is perfect. It's not although I find it very fun. After playing a lot of 3 now the biggest factor for me enjoying the title is simply how stealth was broken in Far Cry 2. Just fixing that makes the game a lot better for me.

One of the posters in the comment section sums up the problem with FC2 pretty succinctly: you fight the same enemies at the same outposts, you turn the same bolt to fix your car, you jam A to fix the gun you picked up off the ground, keep taking your pills to stave off malaria for a few more hours. Rather than being truly immersive, it just ended up being repetitive, boring, and pointless.

But I did still enjoy it.

Far Cry 3 just feels like a bunch of popular games lumped into one game, which is fine. It's just completely different from 2 because of it. 2 was about feeling super vulnerable, 3 is about feeling like a god. That's cool. I just feel like that's the angle most games play.

All you people who complained about the respawning checkpoints in Far Cry 2, a game in which you were not Rambo and therefore did not get to single-handedly defeat the entire military of a Third World country, will finally get the chance to stop bad guys from spawning so that you can depopulate your open-world shooter of meaningful content. Congratulations. I hope you’re also enjoying getting to hunt boars with an assault rifle, which I’m pretty sure is in there because people whined that there were no lions and tigers and bears in Far Cry 2

I haven't played Far Cry 3 yet, but I understand what Chick and the defenders are talking about, and while I agree, I can't care about the good game/bad sequel thing.  Far Cry 2 was a good game/bad sequel too.  While I'd like another game in the spirit of Far Cry 2, I just don't mind that Far Cry 3 is different.

Not bad qt3 review, but I didn't like Far Cry 2 because it was repetitive and the features he wishes made a return in Far Cry 3 (fixing cars, popping pills, unjamming guns) were poorly implemented at best, one-dimensional and grasping for "realism" for the sake of it at worst. It's fine when you're doing this a few times, but eventually all of this turns into repetitive routine and falls quite in line with the "gameness" that Tom describes that Far Cry 3 contains within his review.

Also, Far Cry 2 is janky as shit. Have you tried playing that game in 2012? I have.

The PC version of this is pretty fucked. Weird bugs where the controller gets stuck turning right when you pull LT to aim, lots of other weirdness. Definitely waiting for a patch on this

I haven't played the game yet, but from what I've read, the main character seems to be a depiction of "this is what would happen to a video game protagonist if it occurred in real life", along the same lines as Spec Ops.

Well, from what I've read, Jason makes constant quips about video games and pop culture, so it uses the violence of the setting to make self aware comments on video games and violence. Seems real hit and miss but I'm interested in how it portrays it.

Riding down the river on a jet ski, into a large tunnel, discovering a large underground structure that you can climb, that takes you over a bridge and through a cave into an enemy camp, where you can see a tiger cage and snipe it open so the lion moves towards me and I kill the leopard, which alerts the camp which leads to me slaughtering them in a panic and I didn't actually kill the panther as its killing the dogs.

It's basically super fun, and loveably racist.

I hope they are just making him as awful as they can. Then at the end, you get killed by the crazy guy. The last thing you see before the credits rolls is him standing over you and laughing at how lame you are. Won't happen, though.

Also, I really hate the way that the crafting is set up. It should be an in-game pop-up window, not something that you have to escape back to the main menu to access. Come on. And I hate how looting bodies and switching weapons it tied to the same button and how sometimes it's really hard to get the game to recognize that you're standing over a lootable body and want to loot it.

When you get to the next island there's a no-killing stealth mission where if you get caught it resets to last checkpoint. Probably the least fun I've had all year with a game.

This game is amazing. I got it from Gamefly last week and I can't put it down. The stats screen says my game time is 9 hours and I've only completed the first story mission. I've just been running around liberating bases, upgrading my skills/equipment, and finding those cell towers. This might be my GotY.

I'm about 13 and a half hours into this now and only 33% done according to the stats. I still haven't made it to the second island yet. I want to hurry up and get 100% so I can move on to Hitman: Absolution! I might end up just switching between the two to be honest because at the rate I'm going, Far Cry 3 is going to take me forever.

Some of my favorite missions so far have been the Lost Expedition mission. Unique locations, interesting set ups, lots of shootin'. I'd probably buy some DLC stuff like that.

FC3 is definitely at its best when it's ripping off Tomb Raider:

So is this intentionally the most offensive game ever? because if so they did a great job w/ that

You're a pasty white guy that has to save a bunch of backwoods tribals by doing what they are powerless to do, but only after they take you through a spirit journey and give you tattoos, thereby providing you with a connection to the Earth that you're modern civilization has robbed you of. :lol

Well, the story in Far Cry 3 is pretty bad. Most of it's just really predictable and the rest is kinda pointless. Making the best character in the game vanish midway through was a really dumb decision, too.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The big problem with the ending was giving you a choice. It would have made more sense if they'd treated the act of playing game as the choice itself, meaning that by playing all the way through you've already made the choice to go down that dark path of violence and death.

Never mind that the "bad" ending is probably the worst thing ever. I mean, honestly, Ubisoft. :lol

And they really should have gone full crazy, instead of just giving you a few glimpses of it during those awesome drug sequences. More Apocalypse Now, less generic FPS missions.
