I'm watching the mad men cast on PBS and Weiner says he doesn't know why people think Betty is a bad mom. Januarary Jones seems offended that people dislike Betty. Though may all be explained by Weiner thinking that Betty has matured and I don't think most of the audience agrees.

If Betty is meant to be portrayed as a good mother then I am inclined to say that January Jones just doesn't have the chops to make that real for the audience.  Then again I often think that she was cast because her static limitations as an actress actually made her well suited for the role of Betty.

Well it was Weiner who thought she was a good mom. I don't see where that comes across in the writing. Her relationship with her daughter isn't exactly endearing.

I don't think they want to portray Betty as a good mother but a mother that's just a product of her times. I'm not sure. In any case I really like Betty and find her story the saddest on the show next to Don's. Did Weiner really say she is a "good mom"? Or is that you paraphrasing?

My paraphrasing, but it may be a direct quote. There was like a defense of the character Betty by both Weiner and Jones. The quote may have been like "A lot of people think she's a bad mother, but I don't see that."

Well that doesn't mean she's a GOOD mother either. I don't think she's necessarilly a bad mother, but she's certainly not good with kids. I don't think you can say Don is a particularly good father either, though be certainly likes kids. People can say Don treats his kids well all they want, but ultimately this is a dude who fucked his kids teacher, even after he was found out to be a cheater. Why? Just because!

The difference is that Don fears abandoning his children because of his past and his childhood, so even though his life is a mess and probably needs psychologist girlfriend, he proposes to the nanny girlfriend because the children like her.

She's cold. She's emotionally and, occasionally, psychically abusive. She molested her daughter's ten-year old friend. She fired their beloved nanny/house-keeper. Am I missing something?

I watched the first 30 minutes of this when it first started. Didn't like it. Found the subject focus really boring, and it looked like a poorly recreated Hitchcock style by people who weren't there, so feel the need to be totally anal about everything from that era.

USA vs Japan in WW2 with the kid from Jurassic Park was far better.

Going from other stuff that she has done that I've seen, I don't think January Jones has the acting range to be anything other than a cold, distant stepford wife.

there's only one gay employee, and they use it as a vehicle to explore what it's like to be gay in the 60's. don having a brother is not convenient, neither is his brother seeing him on the train. convenient is "I walked into a random bar and met the father of the daughter I accidentally killed tonight who happens to kill himself a year later because he was an airplane pilot, crashed a plane, killing and injuring many and it's all my fault."

Solid first episode(s). Seems like Don is losing his bite even more this season, at least it seemed like he barely cares about the company anymore.

I also didn't feel that Jessica Pare did a bad job, in fact I felt the portrayal of their relationship in the first half of the show convincing (especially as the ending of the last season left a sour taste in my mouth, was a big fan of Faye). The sex scene was weird tho, I almost thought Don was going to rape her.

Jones is a bad actress? I've only seen S1 and half of S2, but I have no qualms. Is this just a case of people not liking the character, and thus projecting on the actress (like say, Skylar in Breaking Bad)?

She's really not that bad at all in seasons 1 and 2; she was perfectly cast in that role.  But the Betty character is so terrible, shallow and one-dimensional in seasons 3 and especially 4 that her diminishing appearance is welcomed.  They nearly go so far with her awfulness to justify some of the cruelty she suffered from Don early on, which is sad really.  I'm not sure it was done consciously to pull the audience to Don's side exclusively, but that's certainly the effect it's had.

I wouldn't say Betty is one-dimensional at all. January Jones can't act and is just a pretty face, but she does the Betty role well, and the role was specifically written for her.

The kids on the set are scared of January.

She's very one-dimensional in season 4.  The entire arc of the Francis family there is maneuvering around Betty being insufferably self-centered.  It's just caricature of aristocracy in a nuclear family at this point.

She portrays Betty with a cold, almost childish awkwardness; like a malfunctioning Stepford Wife. I can't really think of another female character Betty Draper could be compared to in terms of her personality and behavior.

If anything that weirdness is what makes people dislike the character as well as the performance, which could be a testament of how good Jones actually is.

I thought most of Betty's character development in season 4 mostly came from her "therapy" sessions.

Season 3 Betty certainly isn't one-dimensional, and this is mostly through the character of Grandpa Gene and his relationship with Sally and how he's trying his best to avoid her becoming another Betty.

I think Betty's story is totally sad. :(

She's spent so many years being "less than" her husband. I can imagine becoming very self-centered when you're free from that oppression. Betty still remains first and foremost the #1 victim of sexism on the show, and her character changes have been a direct byproduct of that.
