My big want:

Blizz to make a Starcraft mmo. I think that'd be probably be really different from most mmo's in terms of aesthetic.

Star Wars has a much larger fanbase than TES and the Tortanic has hit an iceberg.

If I liked the genre I'm sure I would be excited by the announcement. But I just don't like mmo's.

As far as the "next" WoW I would argue there may not be a next one at least in this market. I think Wow came along at the right time and acquired the right market. I think the market is WoW. Not people who just genuinely love mmo's or anything. It's similar to the COD phenomenon. The appeal is the specific game for specific reasons. Not the genre.

The "next WoW" will never happen because the subscription model is on its way out.  There are no upcoming games that can command a monthly fee and retain a healthy player base.

If you really think that, you're dumb enough to actually want to play another Shenmue.  Oh wait shit-

But seriously, you've had a thread full of ES fans saying "no thanks" and you still honestly believe that?  smh

I bet ToR after one year will have a much bigger userbase than TESO after one year. Book it.

Well, Star Wars Galaxies didn't too that great, either. I don't think every Star Wars game is going to be a success. However, Skyrim sold 9 million, many of which to Johnny Casual who DOES love multiplayer games. He may be all over this depending on how they advertise it. I'd say there's a bigger crossover between potential TES online players and Star Wars players. TES players are GAMERS. Star Wars players, well, that's a really diverse audience.

The "next WoW" will never happen because the subscription model is on its way out.  There are no upcoming games that can command a monthly fee and retain a healthy player base.

This, however, I agree with.

There won't be a pure Next WoW. The game came out at the right time and dominated a market that is dying now. Sub based MMOs aren't going to work in the future most likely. The market is moving toward FTP. Eventually one of the many FTP is going to start dominating that market, just as there were a bunch of MOBA games competing until LoL took over (and now DOTA2 is on the horizon).

GW2 seems like the most polished, likely successor to the FTP market; yes I know it's not a traditional mmo.

Are people going to buy ES Online for $60, then pay $15/m to continue playing? It'll work for awhile then servers will be merged, just watched.

The SWG comparison isn't really relevant, TOR hit 1 million subs in two weeks -- over double SWG's highest count ever, I believe. Currently around 1.7 mil (over two million sold in about a month from launch), with the most pessimistic predictions that it'll hit 1.25 mil in the next year. Honestly that's still a ton of people. SWTOR had some pretty trailers right out of the gate at least, all TESO has is some Dumbledore logo narration. I don't see TESO getting nearly as much hype (and thus subs) as TOR.

Each failed WoW-clone hurts the chances of the next MMO. I think the MMO userbase will eventually splinter into multiple games with millions of users each, but every TOR and Warhammer makes people pessimistic of the next diku-clone.

People are still trying sub models though, so they aren't going away quite yet. If Guild Wars 2 succeeds at a high level then maybe that changes the consumer mindset.

this discussion always annoy me so much

"why are they doing X? this has nothing to do with X other than the name!"
"don't you know? X sold 24345 bajilliards of copies,it makes perfect sense to me"

no i'm sorry,i don't care,do it right or don't do it at all, movie have learned that after doing highlander 2
http://spoonyexperiment.com/2010/05/20/highlander-2-the-quickening-review-part-1/
how many games it's going to take before they learn too?

Highlander 3, Highlander Endgame, Highlander the Source, TMNT 3, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Spider-Man 3, Green Lantern, Daredevil, MIB2, Rush Hour 3, Ang Lee's Hulk, Cars 2, X-Men 3, X-Men Origins, Alien 3, Alien 4, Superman Returns, every Disney direct to video sequel ever, Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolutions, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, 3, and 4, Shrek 3, Shrek 4, Star Wars Episodes 1 and 2, Star Trek 5, 7, and 9, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four 2, Ghost Rider, Catwoman, The Punisher, Lara Croft Tomb Raider and TR2, the entire Resident Evil franchise, Doom, Mortal Kombat 2, City Slickers 2, Street Fighter, Street Fighter: Chun Li, Dead or Alive, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, Darkman 2 and 3, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Max Payne, Judge Dredd, Garfield 1 and 2, Chipmunks 1-3, Hitman, Another Stakeout, Yogi Bear, Dragonball Evolution, Saws 4-7... this is getting boring

the point is movies learn about as well as magoose

point is when they announce "THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ARE NOW ALIENS" movie fans go in the proper bitchy mode that should follow, when that happens to game people nods and say "meh, makes sense to me,it's popular!"
besides aren't half of those movie like ancient history rooted in 19XX? :smug

Proper Response:

Wrong Response:

"haven't you eaten the TMNT cereals back when you were a kid? don't you realize how popular it was?"

anyway let me elaborate a little better,i didn't mean that movie have no shame at all but they feel less shameless, there are sacred cows that get untouched and revered, like fight club but in gaming? not a chance nor it never feels like they try to force stuff simply because "it's going to make more money" was there ever a movie that had a certain script and then they replaced the main character with batman because batman is popular?

in gaming stuff like this has become common place, these thing are rapidly approaching the same level of shame of those stupid parody "XXXXX Movies" (man that's a good analogy,we should put it in the news feed) and it bothers me people are accepting this with a resounding "eh"

and yes, pointing out the obvious "it's because it's popular" at the question "this is stupid, why are they doing it" it's the same as saying "i'm okay with that"

Everybody should be doing their research. Themepark MMOs are a wasteland now, the WOW casuals have come and gone and that lightning in a bottle will never be captured again.

Funny that EVE is still going strong and increasing subscribers after 9 years. Maybe aiming to be succcessful with 100k subscribers in an MMO with no real end game is better than trying to swing for the fences and get 1million subs with a themepark MMO whose only point of difference is character designs.

It's a matter of how much it cost you versus how many people tossing you dollars you need to survive. TOR's 1 million + audience is nice, but the only concern is how much the project cost to make and if that's enough to satisfy the investment. Rift doesn't have huge WoW-like subscriber numbers, but it wasn't as huge an investment as TOR (as far as I remember) and Trion seems happy with the subscriber base they have. According to reports, LOTRO has become a bigger money maker since going F2P.

Maybe there will be a new "King", but I feel it is more likely the MMO playerbase will splinter into multiple smaller groups.

I'm not really sure anything can be said about the state of MMOs when essentially every new MMO that comes out is a shittier version of The Burning Crusade with some gimmick or another (Public Quests, Full VA, Rift's Rifts and Talent System...thing, etc.). TERA tried different combat ideas but is the same old shit at its core. Guild Wars 2 deserves some credit for trying to break the mold, but its fans are somewhat obnoxious for this.

I've yet to play an MMO that takes what WoW did and make it better, ala EQ -> WoW. Most of the people I  know that I played UO, EQ, XI and even early WoW with are extremely jaded now, myself included. A good portion of them just don't care for the genre anymore. The community aspect of it all is dead now anyway I suppose.

I'm not going to join their guild, and I only enter the thread to make minor points or ask questions. Any criticism of the game is met with a barrage of obliviousness and dismissal. Seems like no one there has a problem with the UI, target system, etc.

I guess I'll wait for it to become as jaded as the WoW thread, which is more entertaining.

Really curious to what Titan will be and how it will look, a stylized look is a given as all Blizzards games have this.
